We had hoped for more to be honest. My snails were rubbery (I should have remembered) and immersed in garlic butter and my wife’s roast pork was fairly uninspiring as were the pommes vapeur accompanying it. Desserts were likewise pretty basic. Not expensive however.

Le P'tit Gourmet

We ate here with some French friends and were quite disappointed by the fare. The canned green beans accompanying the meal were cooked to mush, the meat had some sort of very sweet sauce dumped over the top, and although the staff claimed that the dessert was made in house, it certainly wasn't made from scratch. Even the potato gratin was burned on top. The server was inattentive. We asked for wine with our dinner and never received it. Although the restaurant was practically empty, we had to flag him down several times in order to get more water, etc.All in all, probably one of the most dissapointing meals we've eaten in all our time in France.

Autour du Pressoir

This lovely wine shop/café is conveniently located across from the tourism information center and offers both patio and interior seating, either of which is a pleasant option. Chantal Prieur, the proprietress, is a friendly and helpful woman, whether you are there simply to enjoy a cup of coffee or glass of wine, partake of her daily menu options, or purchase her locally produced wines and foods. We made several visits to Autour du Pressoir and were never disappointed in either the service or the products, and we would actively seek to return.

Creperie Les Vieux Volets

Eating crepes was on our list of must dos and we struck lucky with this one. We were in Tonnerre looking for somewhere to eat lunch on a wet and wild summer's day and stumbled on Creperie Les Vieux Volets. The decor is inviting, homey and relaxed with jazz gently playing in the bacground to add to the ambience. We received a smiling welcome and were promptly given menus. Menus have an English translation, should your food French need some help. The choice is varied, with numerous galettes (savouries) and dessert crepes to choose from, as well as salads and a specials board. The usual choice of drinks, including a very nice demi-sec cidre which I can recommend. The food did not take much time to be served but it wasn't busy. The galettes were well cooked and tasted great. Three of us enjoyed a dessert crepe to follow, equally yummy. The bill was reasonable for four at around €90 and we escaped the worst of the showers. Couldn't ask for more! Happy to recommend this creperie.

Was cycling in the area and our host booked this for us as we were going home the following day. The food was good but the service excellent. The restaurant we believe had recently been purchased and slowly the owners are updating everything. The restaurant, toilets look fantastic. Thank you for being fantastic hosts and looking after 16 British cyclists and taking us all back by car to the hotel we were staying at.

What an interesting little place! Two ladies seem to run the show, and it's a little like you're dining at their house with a bunch of other guests. You're treated almost like family, and there are clearly plenty of people who come here regularly or at least are well-known by the owners. Somewhat quirky decoration with a homely feel. The service is super-friendly and you're put at ease from the start. Discussions about the food and wine are welcomed, although it must be said that during the course of the evening there were a couple of times when the ladies were doing more discussing at other tables than paying attention to the needs of others (this adds to the quirkiness). The meals were a range of standards and a few interesting novelties. But the theme on the plate seemed to be eighties decoration, and although the whole "picture on a plate" thing is a little dated, it was nicely done and gave us another thing to talk about. The tastes were all there and we liked them, and we left well satisfied with our meals. If you're in Tonnerre - or even in the area as we were - then add this to your list of destinations for dinner.
