Bistro Breton

French restaurant for breakfast and lunch offering traditional sweet and savoury crêpes, French cuisine and barista made coffees, BYO

Busselton in the southwest of Western Australia has recently become home to a rare treasure – a restaurant serving high quality authentic Breton cuisine. Especially the blé noir (buckwheat) savoury crêpes and/or Galettes for which the region is famous. It was Bastille Day, when I read about Le Bistro Breton, run by Breton couple Fanny & Thibaut. It sounded promising but 150km to the south of me. It was a beautiful sunny day so I set off. My hopes soared when I saw the dark colour of the ‘Roscoff’ smoked salmon crêpe I ordered and the first bite confirmed that I had finally found the grail I had been hoping for in this area for 4 decades! Thibaut runs the front of house and he explained that head chef Fanny’s mother (and cooking mentor), is a famous Bretonne crêpe chef and had written the definitive book on the subject ‘Le Livre des Crêpes’, an award-winning publication from 1996 and her own school teaching the art of Breton crêpe cuisine.I could go on at length, but suffice to say the Roscoff crêpe and then the Galette Saucisse (a buckwheat crêpe with Breton Pork sausage made to order by a local butcher served with onion fondue, Emmental cheese, rissolées potatoes & a special French Mustard sauce) were both delicious. Buckwheat is actually not a wheat and is gluten-free. The service was excellent and the whole experience way beyond my expectations. One thing - Bistro Breton is BYO only – if you want traditional alcoholic cider with the crêpes you’ll need to bring your own.

This is the best option if you are staying at the Abbey Beach Resort and don't want to drive to the centre of town. The $55 buffet is a bit pricey but still worth it. My fiancé wasn't keen on the cold chilli mussels through (shouldn't they be hot?).
