Best European food near Amsterdam, North Holland Province, The Netherlands

Reviews on European food in Amsterdam, North Holland Province, The Netherlands. Charming, compact and charged with a zestful energy usually associated with cities ten times its size, open-minded Amsterdam delights with well known worldly pleasures tempered with down to earth Dutch sensibility. Radiating along a picturesque series of canals, the city seems to float dreamily and of its own accord at the lowland edge of Europe, welcoming fans of fine art, cutting edge fashion, or a raucous night out, with equal regard for all.

The surprise menu was terrific. Fresh, local ingredients, served imaginatively, and with care.4 of us vegetarian, one vegan. Most of the 5 courses were tailored subtly and carefully to make them vegan, and not making the diner feel "they just left out the things which aren't vegan", which can happen easily. And for one course, an entirely different and creative mushroom and radish dish was presented as the vegan item.Excellent service, full explanations of the ingredients and preparation.Divine asparagus blanched slightly, then marinated in oil, bay leaves, garlic and rosemary, then smoked over a BBQ.My youngest (10) liked most of the vegetables, and the rest of us happily scoffed her rejects.Tuesday night, 7pm, only booked a few hours in advance, restaurant about half full but felt lively because of good music and sensibly all patrons sat in the front half.We were staying 100 metres from Restaurant Adam. It's pricey, and very very good. Have no idea what I'd do if we *lived* 100m from it.... Have to really restrain ourselves and not pop in every weekend.

A less formal simple dinner with colleagues while travelling. We were looking for a place to relax and enjoy some straight forward food. The Happy Bull didn’t disappoint. We were joined by another colleague and although very busy the friendly and helpful staff were able to fit in one more. You do need to book. I’m not sure you can be certain of a table if you just drop in. Thankfully you can book via TripAdvisor. The food was very well done. The onion rings were great. We all went for a burger of some kind, and the options are extensive. They cater for all tastes with chicken and vegetarian options also available. The craft beer menu was good with a wide range of US beers to add to the Americana feel. Value for money was excellent too. Three of us were well fed with several beers for €35/head.

Having read all the glowing reviews, I booked dinner with my daughter and opted for the full 7 courses. Service was very good and the food all looked exquisite but the flavours were, with one exception, very disappointing. I have been lucky to enjoy tasting menus at various Michelin and non-Michelin restaurants around the world so can say that this was, sadly, style over substance. With 2 glasses of pink champagne each, mineral water and gratuity, it was an expensive evening which I wish I’d missed.

Booked after reading reviews and wasn’t disappointed. The atmosphere and service are great. The duck starter and oysters were delicious. We had a selection of mains including the beef and the lamb. The presentation and taste were top quality. It’s a little bit out of the way but it is worthwhile.

This meal was excellent. Service was superb from start to finish. Prompt, courteous, friendly, knowledgable. The food was very, very good. Although the dishes were usually complex, the individual flavors came out, and were not muddled. I especially appreciated that each dish had a meaningful number of vegetable garnishes. Too often, restaurants just put the protein and sauce on the plate and little else. These were very well balanced. I note the lamb in the lamb dish was lacking in flavor; I doubt it was grass-fed. Also one grit of sand in a mussel. But overall, excellent. The cocktail menu is extensive and ours were delightful.

We were staying in a hotel in the area. We didn’t not want to go back into the city centre for dinner with a young child so we went to De Pizzabakkers on account of the very good reviews. The place was busy (always a good sign) but they managed to accommodate us promptly. The pizzas were nice - the dough was thin and crispy and the toppings fresh. Highly recommended. The only point to note is that the place is rather small. If you are going with a big group it’s worth checking availability beforehand.
