Chef Gao

My previous review of Chef Gao was accurate and perhaps brutally honest, so I'm happy to report that my experience last night was better than my earlier visit. We had dumplings as an appetizer, and they were very good. Hot, freshly made, tasty with an excellent Asian sauce for dipping. Our Walnut Shrimp (my wife's favorite dish) was much improved over the first visit, and very enjoyable other than a little sogginess due to how the dish was plated. My Broccoli Beef was just right -- tender and mixed nicely with veggies of good texture and flavor.Table service was also much improved.

I used to love Panda Express...but the food seems to have gone downhill lately. My son still loves the food...my family thinks my home cooked chinese food is better than Panda's.

After a hard day on the road through NW New Mexico and southern Utah, we had a hard time finding a place to eat near the interstate. We definitly couldn't wait to get further into Salt Lake City.Fong Asian Dining is a little off the highway. It seems to be a converted 50's style diner and the decor is a little eclectic. Since the kitchen is in the middle of the restaurant, the AC was cranked and we were cold. The fresh food they make there was great, especially the coconut curry. The orange chicken was frozen nuggets and the sauce was goopy, so I would not reccomend that. My kids got the Bento Boxes which were a perfect little combination plate. The food was very inexpensive and the quality was good if you got the right thing. The servers were a little inexperienced. Other than almost freezing to death, I would go back.

L Q Chinese Gourmet LLC

On Friday, September 4, 2015, I went for lunch with my Dad and step-Mom. This restaurant is buffet style with selections from fresh fruit, salad, shrimp, and various Chinese dishes, to a Mongolian grill, where they will quick-fry what you want from their array of selections. You can serve up your plates and bowls according your whims of the moment. Even the dessert and drinks are included in the lunch price. When I go there, I usually get some of General Tsao’s chicken with just one red pepper to cut up and split up amongst the bites of chicken, no matter what else I get. Today, I also had salad with a hard-boiled egg, sliced beets, olives, blue cheese dressing, and sunflower seeds. On a warm plate with the General Tsao’s chicken, I had breaded shrimp, chicken on a stick, fried rice, sweet sesame rolls, a fried banana, and one palmier cookie.I liked everything on both plates, but two things were not as good as they could have been. The fried banana wasn’t crisp on the outside. This might be a matter of taste, but I do like it crisp on the outside and mushy and sweet on the inside. The inside was also disappointing, as it had a near crunch from a not-quite-ripe banana. The crunch was just enough that I could almost see the green hue from the banana peel. The other thing not quite up to par was that the breaded shrimp were just a little tough for my liking and the breading was a little oily and soft, not crispy. Maybe the oil wasn’t kept hot enough for proper deep frying? I don’t know, but that wasn’t a major issue, just enough to notice it wasn’t quite what I would have expected. Our server was attentive and did stop by to pick up empty plates and ask if we needed refills on our drinks, so I have no complaints there, either.Since my parents don’t eat as much as they used to, I didn’t go back for seconds; although, I would have liked to go back to make a plate of dessert consisting of some peel-and-eat shrimp with cocktail sauce. It’s been too long since I’ve done that. Can you tell I like shrimp? Even so, I didn’t leave hungry. My favorite place to eat is usually a buffet, and I say that the Chinese Gourmet in North Orem is at or near the top of the list, depending on my cravings for the day. I was glad to go along with my step-Mom’s suggestion to go there for lunch today. And, since I was the acting chauffeur for the outing, she and I conspired to bypass my Dad’s mild objection, as Chinese Gourmet still comes in third or fourth on his shortlist of three or four favorite places to eat in the area. Once we were headed that way, he didn’t mind going. If you find yourself anywhere in North Orem when the hungries hit you, maybe even farther away than that, as it was for us, treat yourself to Chinese Gourmet. The plates are small, so treat yourself to more than one if you like.

Rice Wok

This is not fine dining. This is what Chinese Take Out used to be but is rarely seen these days. Seating is limited and basically lunch-counter quality only. Service is in Styrofoam containers but you can grab a free set of bamboo chopsticks! The ambiance is ZERO. But that's all that be said to criticize The Rice Wok. Here's why I love this place. 1. You can get a complete lunch for $5.75. No kidding. Soft drinks extra.2. Unless you're an athlete on a training diet, you're not going to be able to eat it all!3. Every dish is cooked fresh to order, delivered piping hot, and perfect for a quick lunch.4. The menu is amazingly complete with all your Chinese favorites.5. You can order take out - get in your car - and it's ready to go when you get there.6. Here's the best part -- the food quality is outstanding. I've had worse Chinese food in Chinatown in San Francisco. Every single dish I've ever tried is very tasty, authentic, and the portions are so plentiful I feel guilty (but that's their problem).I'm not an easy food critic. Five Plate ratings don't come every day. Rice Wok will not disappoint, and you can bet your free fortune cookie on it!
