Best Central European food near Mittenwald, Bavaria, Germany

Reviews on Central European food in Mittenwald, Bavaria, Germany. As automobiles became popular in the early 20th century, quiet little towns along popular roads suddenly found themselves tourist destinations. Mittenwald is one of them. This small Bavarian town in the northern foothills of the Alps, on the route to Innsbruck, Austria, has been a popular stop since the 1930s. For challenging walks, many area ski runs become hiking trails in summer. And visit the local violin museum (Mittenwald is known for the manufacture of fine string instruments).

Friendly service, a good choice of Bavarian dishes and amazing views. We walked up the well signposted mountain to this restaurant and sat on the terrace admiring the stunning views. There is an indoor restaurant for cooler days. The menu offers regional dishes for lunch as well as coffee and cakes in the morning and afternoon.

The Gletscherschliff is an excellent place to end up in after a walk in the Leutaschklamm. The views over Mittenwald and the Karwendel mountains are very good from the small terrace. Try the home baked cakes – they are extremely tasty and not too expensive.

Situated at 1200 metres high, the German/Austrian border runs through the south facing terrace! It's about an hour's steep walk up through the trees from Mittenwald, but well worth the effort. Stunning views south into Austria in brilliant sunshine, and a pleasant welcome. We enjoyed a 'well deserved' lunch with beer, feeling 'on top if the world'! Highly recommended!

Searching a nice cosy restaurant? This is NOT the place you are looking for. This is a BIG restaurant of more than 150 places divided into 2 big rooms. We went there on a weekday (holiday - with reservation) and the place was full. That ment a lot of noice, really a lot. Next to our table was a baby crying all our meal long and we could hardly hear it. The food: well you certainly get enough but the quality is not that excellent. The schnitzel is sufficient for 2 instead of 1 ( 350 gr ?) , the same for the cordon blue. Both dishes are fried in oil which make the meath very heavy and greasy. The meat itself was ok but the crust contained to much fat. The first bowl of patato-chips were not crispy, the second were much better which shows that some things stay to long in the kitchen before they are served. This is not a cheap restaurant nor an expensive one but I m sure you can find better food for the same or even less money. For example Grobl Alm, a little walk from the centre.

Gaststatte Am Kurpark

We have learned that quite a large fraction of the restaurants and businesses in Mittenwald take their vacation in April or May. As a result, many of the top rated restaurants were not open. We got lucky with Gaststatte am Kurpark. It reopened on April 15th, our last full day on Mittenwald. The dining room was largely empty when we arrived, although there was a table of regular customers in the back. The waitress was very friendly, delivered menus, took a drink order, and then brought us our drinks. Since the menu is quite extensive and in German, it took some time to translate the options from German into English and explain all of them to my wife. After a considerable wait, which the waitress apologized for, we ordered. The Tyroler Speckknödel soup was something I wanted to try. It was good, but not something I would likely order again. The dumpling was a bit on the dense side for my taste. My wife ordered one of the beef steaks. It was very nicely prepared, very flavorful, and accompanied by crispy frites and a green bean and bacon vegetable dish. My wife thoroughly enjoyed the meal. I similarly enjoyed the pork schnitzel, which was done gypsy style, with a mushroom cream sauce, and accompanied by farfalle that was a bit overcooked for my taste, but still quite good. The mixed salad that accompanied the dish had nicely contrasting elements and was quite tasty. Overall, I thought both of the lunch dishes were nicely prepared. As we lunched, some local residents came and were having a wedding celebration. It became clear that this restaurant has a strong local following. Service could have been a bit more attentive, but considering that this was the first day back, I can understand that there were a few glitches and an urge to spend a little time with regular customers. I suspect that if we came back tomorrow that that aspect would have improved. As it is, I hope to return during my next visit to Mittenwald and feel comfortable recommending this restaurant to anyone wanting a lunch or dinner of local Bavarian dishes. It was also one of the few we have dined out that had fish offerings. There are numerous beers available, and also some wine offerings.

On the way from Nauders to Munich, we stopped for lunch in Lermoos. There were a few options, anyhow, we went for the Alpenrose attracted by the sign Wine Lounge; lucky us. Nice set-up with wine bottles as decoration and very attentive service. The food and the beer were good as well as the cocktails my wife and daughter had: Margarita, fine; but "Swimmingpool", this drink was amazing and totally new to us.

Das Marktrestaurant has a Michelinstar for one year now. Owner Andreas and his wife Nancy no how to spoil their guests with great food and beautiful wines. The restaurant which is open for lunch and dinner is located in the lovely small village of Mittenwald, close to the border of Austria. That's why a lot of people, from example Seefeld, take a 15 min. drive to have a unique dinner. The price/quality is superb!!! Please open a second restaurant on our Markt in Amsterdam!!!!

While staying in the Hotel Zugspitze we are here several times. The traditional breakfast was consistently good. Dinner menu somewhat limited although is was off-season. Staff very efficient and by German standards friendly. With so many great places to eat within 5-10 minutes walking distance we would not go out of our way to eat here. But the bar in the hotel is great, with live music and lots of locals in attendance on Thursday nights. Christine in the bar is great--friendly and helpful. We would go out of our way to have a drink here

Very good people human and open for questions and suggestions. Asking for feedback and improvements. The tables on the walkway was not a problem as it is fun watching people in and outside the restaurant walking by. The train can be a bit noisy but only for a moment. Food was very good and light, pasta or dumplings. It was so good I had to eat two evenings in a row, and as I was climbing up the Zugspitze, I asked for a BIG "Männer" portion of pasta and got it, just right to close such a heroic day!!! Thanks team well done!
