Where to Eat in Mittenwald: The Best Restaurants and Bars

April 7, 2018 Giuseppe Pratt

As automobiles became popular in the early 20th century, quiet little towns along popular roads suddenly found themselves tourist destinations. Mittenwald is one of them. This small Bavarian town in the northern foothills of the Alps, on the route to Innsbruck, Austria, has been a popular stop since the 1930s. For challenging walks, many area ski runs become hiking trails in summer. And visit the local violin museum (Mittenwald is known for the manufacture of fine string instruments).

On our first try, despite being early, we couldn't get seated - the place was absolutely packed. so we made a reservation for the next evening. Food absolutely delicious and service very friendly (some people might experience it as overbearing though). Menu also in English. We got a "Schnaps" on the house for visiting after they couldn't accommodate us the previous day.

We return to the Gasthof Stern for the very friendly and efficient service as well as for some real German food! My husband enjoyed his cordon bleu and my daughter enjoyed her jagerschnitzel..my Turkey breast was good, but a little tough...the spatzle was excellent--some of the best we've had..good gulaschsuppe as well..Great beer too! The entire town was not crowded the week before Christmas--kind of a surprise, but an enjoyable one!

Grobl-Alm

When staying in Mittenwald we ate at the Gröblalm every evening. The main restaurant is large, but as it is divided up into variously furnished areas it doesn't make the impression of an impersonal eating place. The style is Bavarian country house, with lots of wood and rustic cloth being used. One wall is covered with murals in the style of "Lüftlmalerei", which is found on the outer walls of many houses in the town. The standards of cooking, presentation and service were high; the waitresses were dressed in local dirndls and were extremely helpful and friendly. One reason for choosing this restaurant was the fact that there are vegetarian alternatives on the menu - not always found in other restaurants, as the south generally seems to be a meat-eater's paradise. If I had one point of criticism it would be that perhaps another two veggie dishes would be a good idea, then you could eat all week without repeating yourself! The freshness and quality of the food were admirable; our favourite dish was the kaiserschmarrn, which in some recipe books is incorrectly referred to as a type of pancake. Really it's more like a gigantic sweet soufflé scattered with raisins and served with purée of apples and cranberries - not something to be eaten if your last meal was at four in the afternoon! Also recommended were the windbeutel, but we never had room for them - unfortunately. The prices were not too high, the portions generous; definitely a restaurant to be recommended!

Mittenwald has been a favourite 'all year round' holiday destination for us. It's particularly charming at Christmas. Likewise too, Zum Nachtwachter.
We chose to return to eat here on our first night this year, and were both recognised and welcomed. The menu comprises a good choice of local favourite dishes. The food is lovingly cooked and attractively served.
Well definitively be returning again! Highly recommended!

Gaststatte Am Kurpark

We have learned that quite a large fraction of the restaurants and businesses in Mittenwald take their vacation in April or May. As a result, many of the top rated restaurants were not open. We got lucky with Gaststatte am Kurpark. It reopened on April 15th, our last full day on Mittenwald.
The dining room was largely empty when we arrived, although there was a table of regular customers in the back. The waitress was very friendly, delivered menus, took a drink order, and then brought us our drinks. Since the menu is quite extensive and in German, it took some time to translate the options from German into English and explain all of them to my wife. After a considerable wait, which the waitress apologized for, we ordered.
The Tyroler Speckknödel soup was something I wanted to try. It was good, but not something I would likely order again. The dumpling was a bit on the dense side for my taste. My wife ordered one of the beef steaks. It was very nicely prepared, very flavorful, and accompanied by crispy frites and a green bean and bacon vegetable dish. My wife thoroughly enjoyed the meal. I similarly enjoyed the pork schnitzel, which was done gypsy style, with a mushroom cream sauce, and accompanied by farfalle that was a bit overcooked for my taste, but still quite good. The mixed salad that accompanied the dish had nicely contrasting elements and was quite tasty. Overall, I thought both of the lunch dishes were nicely prepared.
As we lunched, some local residents came and were having a wedding celebration. It became clear that this restaurant has a strong local following. Service could have been a bit more attentive, but considering that this was the first day back, I can understand that there were a few glitches and an urge to spend a little time with regular customers. I suspect that if we came back tomorrow that that aspect would have improved. As it is, I hope to return during my next visit to Mittenwald and feel comfortable recommending this restaurant to anyone wanting a lunch or dinner of local Bavarian dishes. It was also one of the few we have dined out that had fish offerings. There are numerous beers available, and also some wine offerings.

The welcoming atmosphere paired with the smiling personal greeting guarantees a wonderful evening out. The preparation and quality of food is hard to find anywhere in the world, considering the very fair pricing. Attention to details are very noticeable in the presentation of the dishes. The service is wonderful and any extra orders or changes are completely accepted and fulfilled to perfection. The effort to please each individual guest is hard to overlook. It's certainly not a place for a rushed meal on the run.

It has to said, this restaurant has an impressive facade, the paintings on the building are gorgeous. The service was friendly, a nice change, as the German waitresses can be a little stern. The food was good, very tasty and well presented. The waitress like most restaurants we visited in this area, wore a traditional dress which was gorgeous. Overall a very nice evening was had.

For our final night at Mittenwald we reserved a table at this restaurant and we weren't disappointed. The service is brilliant, the food is gorgeous and the wooden interior is very traditional and authentic. This restaurant has loads of nic nacs and interesting artifacts.
