What to do and see in Mittenwald, Germany: The Best Places and Tips

August 19, 2017 Darleen Reid

As automobiles became popular in the early 20th century, quiet little towns along popular roads suddenly found themselves tourist destinations. Mittenwald is one of them. This small Bavarian town in the northern foothills of the Alps, on the route to Innsbruck, Austria, has been a popular stop since the 1930s. For challenging walks, many area ski runs become hiking trails in summer. And visit the local violin museum (Mittenwald is known for the manufacture of fine string instruments).

My wife and I scheduled a side-trip here while touring the Alpenstrasse last week. It was well worth the visit! Pay Euro 5 for the car park and free access for several routes around the falls. Follow the red one for the easiest access and see some stunning views!

This is a very exciting experience in winter when the ice is well established. It can get very busy and congested. There is a small fee at the entrance. Note that there are no toilet facilities once you enter the gorge. You need waterproof shoes and a camera. At its best in February/March if you want to see the best ice formations.

Ferchensee Lake

We walked here from Mittenwald. the signs indicated that it would take about 90 minutes but we did it in an hour.
The walk is beautiful and there and many paths that you can take through lovely scenery. When you reach the lake it opens out in front of you and is quite stunning. The lake is used for swimming and has facilities on the edge. It is a great place to sunbathe or just spend a couple of hours chilling. There is a snack house and for something more substantial at the fare end of the lake is Fechensee Hotel and restaurant with great food.
After refreshments you can take one of several well marked paths back to you home destination.

We took the train to Mittenwald and walked maybe 15-20 min through town to get to the gorge- there was good signage for it. Then there's about a 10-20 minute fairly steep climb through a wooded area to get to the metal walkways that take you through the gorge. I was concerned because I'm afraid of heights but I had no problems with it and was in awe of the engineering. We really enjoyed the perspective it allowed. You can return the way you came, or leave the metal walkway and take a path through another wooded area to get to the other side. There you can pay a small fee to go on a short wooden boardwalk where you are right on top of the water rather than above it. The boardwalk ends at a nice waterfall. This part was both cool and wet, so slightly slippery. We spent about 2 hours there. It was an excellent day adventure from Innsbruck!

We'd been to the berg station before in 2009 and were looking forward to another visit. Sadly disappointed on this occasion. Having thrashed ourselves to climb the mountain we were keen for a relaxing and refreshing bite to eat before taking the car down.
The staff speak little to no English, ok not a problem but when they are this unhelpful poor communication just kills things. There was no organisation and it was chaotic. You pay here, collect food here, drinks here. Each time queuing so your foods cold when you've got your drink. The cost was ridiculous. We've used many cable cars and they all run about £10. This was €20.50 with a refundable €3 if you managed to understand the German explanation given by the surly staff. I will think twice before going here again.

This is a very sweet little museum out of the way. If you're interested in violins there's a lot to see, but there's not much to hold the attention of little ones. Probably one for people who actively have an interest in musical instruments.

There are 3 restaurants on the lake the Lautersee Alm is by the swimming/bathing area. The staff were good and bad though the family were very helpful, but the there is an excellent choice of hot/cold food and hot/cold drinks. There is of course the usual home made cakes with variations - the strawberry and rhubarb crumble was excellent. Had some of the best lattes from here. Visited 3 times returning from walks for snacks.

St. Peter und Paul

Reviewed By Jon from Dallas - Dallas, Texas

St. Peter und Paul Church is the hallmark of Mittenwald and a MUST-SEE when visiting the village. You can't miss her lüftlmalerei (hand painted) bell & clock tower at the foot of the Obermarkt pedestrian street...or her bells that faithfully toll the time daily. Inside you will find a vibrant, living church dating back to 1315 serving some 5,900 parishioners in the Karwendel valley.
The Wessobrunner architecture and Matthaus Gunther frescoes are lovingly restored and tended. We were most impressed with the family pews, each labeled with German Gothic printed name plates throughout the centuries. Decorative family/guild staffs at the ends of prime pews also stake worship territory.
The antique organ was restored in 1999, and occasional recitals are well-advertised in the foyer. We ventured up into the organ loft, reached by an acute spiral staircase. We climbed even further up a handmade ladder into the choir loft for a cherub's-eye-view of the organ case and the incredible fresco ceiling. Access is limited, but we felt compelled to get this rare view. Forgive us, Father!
In the churchyard there are two tiny altars. One is in a beautiful grotto with votives and a Madonna back-lit from above. The other commemorates fallen German soldiers from World War II...a rare display of young Nazis discretely, yet reverently remembered.
In the small square at the base of the bell tower is a monument to Matthias Klotz, who brought the art of violin-making to Mittenwald in 1683. From here you are just steps from the Geigenbaumuseum (Violin Museum), lovely sidewalk cafes and the workshop of present day violin maker, Anton Maller.
We travel a lot, and our visit to St. Peter und Paul Church ranks as a charming, authentic and memorable stop along the way...the highlight of our time in storybook Mittenwald.

I have skied here three times in the last five years, both alone and with friends.
It's easily accessible using the free bus from Mittenwald, and has the advantage of Mittenwald itself for accommodation, cafés and restaurants.
The skiing is leisurely, more than challenging, but made up by delightful mountainside 'pit-stops' such as Korbinian Hut.
Looking forward to the next opportunity to return!
