Pittsburgh is home to a large number of coffee shops. Many of them have taken up residence in spaces previously occupied by other businesses and many of the buildings are more historic in nature, providing a cozy setting for a cup of brew. A good example is Steel Valley Roasters, located in the Pittsburgh suburb of Homestead.Steel Valley Roasters grabs your attention at first due to its interior. The hardwood floors, brick walls, and artwork are what you notice first and they place you in homey yet hip frame of mind. The seating at Steel Valley Roasters consists of a large, communal table plus a couch and smaller tables so that you, the discerning coffee and tea drinker, can sip and share either with a large group of people or in a small group.Steel Valley Roasters serves coffee in various drink forms, plus they have tea, sparkling water, and even a few organic electrolyte drinks if coffee and tea aren’t to your liking. I loved the freshly brewed coffee I tasted while at Steel Valley Roasters. It was fresh and roasty with a touch of fruit lurking in the background. If you feel yourself getting hungry, they serve muffins, cookies, pastries, and packaged protein bars, perfect for when you’re on the go. The employees at Steel Valley Roasters are well versed on coffee and they can help guide you toward the best drink for your tastes if you ask. In many ways, this reminds me of the personnel I have met during my visits to craft breweries. They are much more than just someone serving a beverage. They are knowledgeable about what they serve and ready to help you discover the drink that is right for you. There is an exercise room in the back of Steel Valley Roasters. No one was exercising when I was there, but I would imagine it could get rather noisy at times. Aside from that small, potential issue, a visit to Steel Valley Roasters is a most pleasant experience. It is one of the stops on the Coffee Passport, a Pittsburgh initiative that encourages coffee lovers to visit different coffee houses in the greater metropolitan area, and it’s a place I recommend visiting for a quick and memorable beverage and snack.

The Cafe at the Frick

After our tour of the Frick, we decided to grab lunch. This is not your ordinary cafe. The menu has options for everyone with a special twist. Many of the ingredients are directly from the garden! We started with a delightful Cabernet. The watermelon gazpacho was very unique and tasted great. We ordered the lobster sandwich and the Buddha bowl. As Elise described, the lobster was plentiful and delicious. The Buddha had a nice mix and was also excellent. Definitely worth the money.
