Olive Kitchen

Reviewed By Travelbuddy010

A couple of years ago, we used to go to Olive Kitchen regularly. However we stopped going as we decided the food was expensive and not that great. The service could also be hit and miss. Lily was lovely but a couple of the waiters were quite grumpy - and the male owner always seemed stressed. A number of other cafes also opened up in the area (such as 'Dazed' and 'Paper Boy') so we went elsewhere. We heard Olive Kitchen recently changed hands so we were interested to see if it was any different. Unfortunately the menu was still the same (and so were the prices). I had the corn fritters which weren't amazing (in terms of the fritters, just a mouthful of granular corn and not much other flavour). At $23 (which included smoked salmon) I thought the dish was pricey. At Dazed on Tennyson Road, they serve delicious fritters with smoked salmon for $21. I'm happy to pay premium prices if the food is excellent but don't think this is the case at Olive Kitchen. Other items are also a rip-off: $2 for a babychino???! Their breakfast sides are also steep. You just get the impression they are trying to maximise profit at every opportunity. Once I ordered a warm milk for my toddler and they charged me what a coffee would cost! From memory, their peppermint tea costs more than English Breakfast - why the difference in price? Generally, their tea & coffee is more expensive than other cafes in the area. It's a shame as Olive Kitchen has a fantastic location so if they got the menu and prices right, it could be really successful. In my opinion, they need to do the following:- serve decent bread (when you go to a cafe, you don't want to eat Tip Top sandwich bread, you want Sonoma or Bowen Island). All the other cafes in the area serve premium, artisan bread. Olive Kitchen's toast options are pretty dismal. They have a sourdough but that's about as exciting as it gets. Their thick-cut fruit toast is also not as good as it used to be.- overhaul the menu and reduce the prices. Perhaps they need to have breakfast at Dazed around the corner to see how it can be done well. - employ some staff who look happy to be there. On previous visits (unless Lily took our order) we never felt we were greeted in a friendly & welcoming way. There's a lot more competition now in Breakfast Point and Mortlake so if you have an average cafe experience, it's very easy to go elsewhere. Perhaps the new owners of Olive Kitchen should keep this in mind when they are considering what changes to make.

Very rude, very bad service. The man who works here has no respect for customers - especially women and children. He’ll stare at you and tell you your children are dropping food on the floor. He’ll then continue to stare as you eat or drink and will shake his head like you are a piece of trash. You cannot reason with him, he appears to have no understanding of children and parents. He needs to find a job out of the way of people. Too many horrible experiences. Read the reviews on their website first.Caroline, please desist with your defamatory campaign in assaulting the character of the owner of this business. We contacted you giving you the opportunity to retract the false statements you have been making on our social media, in case you had been having a bad day when you made the decision to defame a person’s character and make malicious accusations, we received no reply from you. We have advised you that people who know you have been into the café this week to tell us this behaviour is typical of your character.1. You have never had a conversation that was not ordering items at the café with the owner, you have never made a complaint directly to the café2. The owner was not looking/staring at you, he was doing his work and serving customers, he has no interest in you at all except whilst he served you as a customer in his cafe3. The owner advised you that your child had spilt all their food out of concern for your child. As a parent and grandfather he was worried your child was hungry, he had no idea (or would ever imagined) that your reaction to his concern for your child would be your utter contempt and a brutal campaign against him.4. We've tried this place twice now, as I always like to give placed a 2nd go, but again found it too expensive for the small portion that you get.Even just ordering toast with jam was pricier than anywhere else I get it, and the coffee is pretty disappointing, tasted more like hot milk than hot coffee.

I come here often and have never been disappointed. Staff are always very friendly and food tastes great. The place is small inside but has a good outdoor area which is sheltered. Food is always fresh and you can buy all sorts of traditional Lebanese foods and spices also, highly recommend and I will be returning here as often as I can!

Came here for breakfast and the menu really sounds exciting. Most of the dishes are healthy and perfect for health conscious customers. They also sell burgers that I’m yet to try. Maybe next time.On this particular visit I had their brioche French toast and paleo muesli. Wow! Both dishes really blew my mind. Not only looked gorgeous on the plates but tasted fresh and delicious. I can’t even pick my favourite as I love both dishes. Coffee is amazing too (Toby Estate). On different note, their raw cakes from Raw Passion desserts look awesome and healthy but I was too full. Might try on my next visit.
