Spend one night at the Half Moon. Room was clean and beds comfortable. Lovely shower. Heating wasnât on when we came in around half ten. The staff resolved this quickly.Breakfast was excellent. Tasty and a full plate. Staff very friendly and helpful.

All three of us eating said our main courses and desserts were superb. Service was attentive, friendly, fast and faultless. We have been here a number of times before, but only sitting outside in the summer, so we already knew that the food was consistently good but today noticed the atmosphere inside, interior design and table settings were so nice. Even our guest commented on what a lovely place it was. Highly recommended and worthy of the praise they recieve.

Visited the pub on a cold wet August Sunday, hoping for a warm cosy pub.........how wrong could we be! The pub was cold, dismal and souless. However, the bar staff seemed very pleasant. Sadly, the lunch was very disappointing. I had roast pork, not a nice taste, tasted liked it it had been cooked in old oil. It was dry and felt it may had been cooked a lot earlier and then heated up. The roast potatoes were bland and not very roasted, the veg was ok. My friend had fish and chips which was apparently ok but the white fish was grey. We are local but won't be returning.....an expensive mistake.

There were 17+ plus for our visit on Saturday lunchtime. Had a booked room to ourselves. Birthday party. Table decorated , balloons etc.Food order taken quickly and promptly served. Good service by waiting staff.Canât fault the food . A mixture of pizzas, childrenâs meals, salads, chicken etc, plus good selection of sweets. Good wine and beer list.Altogether a very enjoyable experience.Would thoroughly recommend, either for social visit or even for a larger party like ourselves. Well done to the staff.

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The staff were very accommodating, the service was excellent and the food was great. We had a variety of meals and there were no complaints from anyone. Visited for the first time Monday evening for their offer of 2 for 1 on burgers - cheapest one free. This is a great offer as the burgers are fabulous. Proper generous burgers lavishly dressed with toppings, decent hot chips and a small portion of coleslaw. We had the Blue Cheese and the Hunters and they were both really, really good. In fact I was nearly beaten by my burger but managed to finish it all. So tasty.The pub was relatively busy for a Monday night with people taking advantage of this offer. It's a nice traditional pub (Ok the seats look as though they could do with some new ones as a bit shiny and worn). Nice ambience and atmosphere and very friendly and efficient service from a lovely young bar lady. Too full for pudding unfortunately. Seating both outside at the front overlooking the road and fields and at the back which I would imagine would get busy on a summers day. Will definitely be back for both the burgers and also to try their Sunday roast which looks very fairly priced. Would definitely recommend to others.

First visit for a few months. Friendly and efficient service with very good food. The batter on the fish literally melted in the mouth and the Gelato for the desert was excellent.So what went wrong to spoil this great experience? I asked for the bill and when it came, I paid in cash and was expecting nearly £4:00 back in change. At no time did I say to anyone to "keep the change" and you can imagine my dismay (and that of the staff) that when I went to find out what had happened, that I found my change had been put in the "Tip" pot already. It was given back much to the mutual embarrassment to us all. I would have given a tip, but the presumptuous nature of this transaction did annoy me so much at the time, so I didn't.In hindsight there may have been some kind of misunderstanding at the time the bill was paid, but I don't know how that could have been to be honest. I never said "Keep the change" or even intimated it.This could put me off The Temple, but it won't. There is too much good going for the pub/restaurant, but a clear policy about tipping needs to be put into place please.Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are glad you enjoyed your meal with us and apologize about the misunderstanding at the end of the evening. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

I have been here before. About 50 years ago when I was a single young soldier. I have tried a few times since to find it again but never could. I was beginning to think it was like the Magic Toyshop except it sold the best ploughman's lunch ever. Massive slab of cheese, equally large slab of butter and excellent ham with great bread. I was reminiscing about this when my wife said. "I know how to get there." And so she did. It's still a great place. This time round I had the cottage pie which was unbelievably good. Not cheap but good value. Looking a other people's plates it seems that the portions are still generous. The pub itself is a magnificent find. Looked to me as if it hadn't changed in 50 years and probably longer. It's snug and friendly and tucked away in the countryside. I would heartily recommend it to anyone. It's also dog friendly, not that I have a dog. But if I did I would take it there in a flash.

I must stress that the rating refers to our particular experience on 22nd August, as a visit last year merited five stars.We planned to lunch at this pub as it is situated midway between two elevated landmarks on the Hanger Way . Having parked near the pub in the morning and walked the 5 miles to Shoulder of Mutton Hill and back, we planned to walk a similar distance to Noer Hill and back in the afternoon after lunch . However, despite arriving at the pub just after 1 o'clock, we were informed that, unless we had reserved a table, we could have no food. This of course, entirely ruined the planned afternoon walk as, by the time we had driven somewhere else to eat, it was too late to walk to Noer Hill. We have never experienced before the need to book to eat at a pub for a mid-week lunch, and were most surprised on this occasion as, although the pub was busy, we had found a table without any problem. As we imagine this pub is popular with walkers of the Hanger Way, we would urge booking to ensure that more than a bag of crisps is on offer after a strenuous morning's hike.Good afternoon to you and thank you for your review. The Hawkley Inn continues to enjoy the most amazing success and has been exceptionally busy during the Summer holiday period and we have found ourselves in the enviable position of having to, on rare occasions, where customers don't reserve a table beforehand, of not being able to offer them service. This does not offer people such as yourself any comfort of course, and so we would always suggest calling before planning your day, just to check we can accommodate you; and can only apologise that our popularity has resulted in your disappointment.
