As automobiles became popular in the early 20th century, quiet little towns along popular roads suddenly found themselves tourist destinations. Mittenwald is one of them. This small Bavarian town in the northern foothills of the Alps, on the route to Innsbruck, Austria, has been a popular stop since the 1930s. For challenging walks, many area ski runs become hiking trails in summer. And visit the local violin museum (Mittenwald is known for the manufacture of fine string instruments).

Situated at 1200 metres high, the German/Austrian border runs through the south facing terrace! It's about an hour's steep walk up through the trees from Mittenwald, but well worth the effort. Stunning views south into Austria in brilliant sunshine, and a pleasant welcome. We enjoyed a 'well deserved' lunch with beer, feeling 'on top if the world'! Highly recommended!

The Gletscherschliff is an excellent place to end up in after a walk in the Leutaschklamm. The views over Mittenwald and the Karwendel mountains are very good from the small terrace. Try the home baked cakes – they are extremely tasty and not too expensive.

Friendly service, a good choice of Bavarian dishes and amazing views. We walked up the well signposted mountain to this restaurant and sat on the terrace admiring the stunning views. There is an indoor restaurant for cooler days. The menu offers regional dishes for lunch as well as coffee and cakes in the morning and afternoon.

"Gasthaus Ferchensee" has a family tradition for over 85 years. We are famous for our bavarian cuisine, especially the fresh trouts, "Kaiserschmarrn" and homemade cakes. Our terrace is on the waterfront with a beautiful view on lake and mountains, far away

Before talking about food or about the service, you have got to bear in mind that the terrace enables you to enjoy a rare beautiful view of the lake and the Wetterstein Mountain. On a sunny day, you could spend the whole day swimming in the lake, taking a sunbath, walking and hiking. it is worth getting up there. The restaurant provides fresh home made traditional Bavarian food, it is not a gastro pub. You have got to benchmark it to traditional Bavarian food, not to gastro pubs. Hence it will not be everyone's taste but provided you like sweet sauerkraut, boiled trout, potatoes with butter, schnitzel with French fries, wursts with sweet mustard, it must rank in the top places. The service can be very rough but it can also be very friendly, depends on the waiter, depends on the day. I'd recommend to give it a try (and if you do not like their sweet sauerkraut, it is not because it is not a good sauerkraut but it is because you do not like sweet sauerkraut) and enjoy the view!
