Three friends had dinner here and the menu was very limited for main courses. The entree section is better and we were all happy with our entree but there are limited mains and they do not come with any vegetables. I had fish and it was good but I went home and had more to eat. Some green beans alongside the baked Mullaway would have made a huge difference. All three desserts were really for warmer weather and it was a very cold evening and we wanted something warm and nourishing.

OTIS Dining Hall

Reviewed By Mark W

We were all looking so forward to dining at the Otis after previously attending a truffel hunt (The Truffel Farm, Canberra - one of my previous reviews in July 2018) where the owner of Otis, Damien Brabender, was the guest chef who prepared a spectacular lunch after the hunt. The lunch was so impressive and delicious and Damien promoted his restaurant - Otis Dining Hall - during the lunch. It took us a while to organise, but finally we managed to organise a suitable date (17.8.19) and then drove over 6 hours to Canberra to meet with other family members, who drove from Sydney, for our long awaited dining experience. We ordered our food and wine, however, our entree arrived before our wine? Had to call the waiter and ask if the wine could be organised as a priority so we could eat. Then there was an extremely long wait for mains (the restaurant was not full or overly busy) - my wife had to request another drink while waiting, and the waitress muttered some form of apology about the delay and our meals being delivered to the wrong table but did not elaborate further?? Finally one meal arrived - my steak, which the waitress proceeded to drown in a thick gravy?? This was supposed to be a brandy jus?? The rest of our party sat waiting for their food. Finally the rest of our order arrived over 5 minutes after my steak had been served?? Of the other three meals, one had to be returned as the steak was stone cold, another steak was was again covered with the same gravy that had been sitting in a jug on the table since the first steak was served - this gravy then congealed into a think skinned glug on the plate. Another dish - the duck, was dry, stringy and over cooked. The meals were a disaster!! The steaks were dry and the gravy (not a jus) was overbearing, thick and gluggy. The side of potatoes looked like they had been warmed up so many times the skins were wrinkled up. An extra bowl of potatoes were provided with the returned steak, which were fresh and in stark contrast to the first bowl served. The side of brussel sprouts at least had some taste. The waitress offered us free deserts to make up for our disappointment, but we declined, not willing to take any further chances on more food disasters from the kitchen.A special message to the owner Damien - We know what a master chef you are, having previously eaten your food, but you need to sort out your kitchen and your chefs, otherwise they will ruin your reputation if they continue to serve food of this standard and quality.

I recommended the Trev's Collective plates for breakfast which my friends and family have had quite a few times, and they are absolutely delicious. You get to choose 3 dishes from half a page of options. I sometimes go for sweet, savoury or a combination of the two. The dish also comes with a delicious juice of the day which is a nice little bonus. There are also other options if you don't want the Taste Collective. The service is always very friendly and efficient. It's best to book for a Sunday morning because it's so popular. We like a particular table, and they are always happy to oblige if possible.

The menu at Vincent is limited to 5 entrees, 5 mains and 4 desserts, and with a wine list that similarly goes for quality over quantity. There's a nice vibe in here, perched at the bar stools around a central counter, and servers are friendly and keen, if a little chaotic, with sides going astray and then drinks left off the bill. The online menu is more a guide to what's available on the night, but give a good impression of the style of cooking.Vegetarian options appeared limited to one entree and 2 mains, and for gluten-free there was just 1 entree and 3 mains. For entree we had the Baby Octopus with Coconut Tom Yum, and Char Siu Pork, both of which exceeded expectations, as did the mains - Confit Duck and Wagyu sirloin. hand cut chops were also god and almost a meal on their own.Desserts were the weak spot - we chose the panna cotta and creme brulee but neither was particularly special.A good night out, at a very good price for the quality of the cooking, but somewhat limited if you have any dietary issues.

We were in Canberra for a few days, so as a matter of course I go to Trip Advisor to try and get the low down on best places to eat. This came up so I booked it. The lure was the water views..... as it was winter, we did not get the sunset, but that’s OK!The room we were in did not take advantage of the lake, it was more like an ante room, looking out over the park. Quite dark. They have two set menus, so we chose the 4 course. With the add-on’s from the chef, there was plenty to eat, in fact, too much for me. $95.The food was well presented but I felt it was all dark looking, and heavy, with not much vibrancy to the presentation. Nothing fresh and crunchy to temper the richness of the meal. But in saying that it was tasty. Wine list was a bit more expensive than other licensed places we have dined at.The staff were well versed in each course, and they decanted our red, which was a nice touch.Overall, I would say a well polished place to dine, but too much food for us.

We dined at Courgette to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. While the service was good and personable - it was serviceable but not brilliant. The atmosphere lacked substantially as it was very busy and reasonably noisy for a Monday night. We anticipated to be well served by an enticing menu but unfortunately found the food to be fairly underwhelming. My wife described it as lacking any wow factor. The servings were small and the combinations lacked the layered and complimentary synergy one might hope for or expect. We've dined at a number of other fine dining establishments in Canberra recently, but unfortunately Courgette did not rate well compared to any of these. Average rating from us was 6.5/10 and for the price unlikely to be back any time soon

We came on a fairly busy mid week night - I'm glad we booked!Despite the nearly full dining room, service was fast and polite, we especially appreciated our waitress with the curly hair who was so friendly and accommodating. The flexibility of the kitchen to adapt the banquet to gluten free for one of our party was incredible. Not only did they make the changes without batting an eyelid, but the modifications were thoughtful and meant the person could enjoy food as delicious as the rest of the table. We had the banquet which was excellent value for 65$ a head. Each dish was delicious and delicate. My favourite was the prawn moussaka but the kingfisher was a close second, along with the cardamom ice cream dessert. The wine list, which featured many Canberra district wines, was very varied and complemented the meal meal. I would happily return.

Aubergine

Aubergine is rather curiously set in a suburban shopping area and I spent my evening looking out through the artfully draped black curtains at the concrete carpark of the Griffith shops. It was...different. Nonetheless we had a lovely meal at Aubergine, the food is really superlative. Each course was a success: from the amuses-bouche, to the different starters, the main and the dessert. I want to particuarly highlight the pork belly, the truffle course and the blue eyed trevalla. We especially enjoyed the inclusion of native Australian ingredients, making this much more interesting and outstanding than other places we have eaten in while in Australia. Given its quality, this meal would not be out of place amongst some of the one Michelin starred restaurants in Paris. Meanwhile the wine pairings were excellent and well explained. The glasses were quite generous - watch out!Given how successful the food was, and how much effort had gone into everything, it was so strange to be served by someone who appeared to finishing up her first day on the job. As examples, we were left forgotten with our menus for a quarter of an hour (there were three dishes to pick, it didn't take that long to choose), she forgot to ask how the beef was to be cooked, and got very stressed when she realised she didn't know who was eating what. The other servers were good, especially the sommelier, so there is hope!

We went on a Saturday afternoon and had a table booked but it wasn’t that busy. We were there with locals and they said it gets busy later on so booking would be important especially on weekends. There’s a nice outdoor casual area and an inside formal restaurant. The range of gin is extensive, I’d say 100+ options from all over the world. We relied purely on the waiter to recommend options based on our tastes. The guys have an excellent knowledge on the options and can provide specific recommendations based on fruit/spice/floral etc base flavours that you prefer. You get a small fruit selection and tonic water with each drink that suits its particular base flavour. You can then add the fruit as you please. It’s not overly cheap, most of the drinks we had were $20-24 each including the fruit. You could just buy the gin on its own for $3.5 less per drink. But it’s a cool place to try some gin and have a couple warm up drinks before dinner, or stay and eat at the restaurant
