Maxine's

Texas Monthly rates Maxine's one of The 40 Best Small-Town Cafes in Texas and one of the 40 Best Breakfast Places in Texas!

Reviewed By gl13sand

Small town local restaurant with a great breakfast menu & nice to choose from a la carte menu. Recently added espresso drinks, sometime even in a milkshake! Huge blueberry pancakes, even kid size, are delicious. Also like the oatmeal with blueberries and toasted pecans. Two baked good cabinets make having something sweet very tempting with every cookie ever tried worth the calories. Location is great downtown Bastrop (just 30 minutes from Austin) close to Colorado river accessible between Wells Fargo and Neighbors via a bunch of steps to a walking trail that goes to Fishermen's park.

Really enjoyed dinner here - gorgeous place, reminded me of having lunch at The Grist Mill in Gruene a few Texas trips ago – situated by the Colorado River with outside seating on staggered levels, which we didn't opt for as the local mosquito population just love my husband! I went for 2 'small plates' (finally!) - the black bean hummus & the Texas bruschetta, both absolutely delicious, & he had the Hippy Dippy sandwich, a concoction of artichokes, peppers, onions & spinach which he thoroughly enjoyed & demolished fairly rapidly, followed by chocolate mousse & ice cream, which I did give him some assistance with! They mention a 'scratch kitchen' on their menu, & everything does indeed look & taste home-made. The staff were just lovely, & the lady dealing with us took time to explain their philosophy, give us information about our chosen dishes & answer a few questions we had. Would definitely recommend this establishment & would eat here again if we're ever in the area.Wow Carolyn! Thank you for such a thoughtful and lovely review! We really appreciate guests like you - and the comparison to The Grist Mill is very flattering - we love it there. We hope you visit us again, if you are ever back in Bastrop. Thank you again.

We have eaten here two time now since they opened and both times the food was excellent. Pretty good selection on the menu. The first time my husband had the shrimp and grits special and I had their Texas burger and chili spiced tater tots. Both were served hot, good presentation and delicious ! The second time we had the burgers. Our friends had chicken fried chicken and they said it was great. The charred salad, cod basket were also rated as tops! Service was good too. Atmosphere is good, as they have done a lot of remodeling. Very nice. They weren’t real busy but it was a Thursday evening. Hope they are a success as they have great food and service. They are not far from Austin or Bastrop. Try this place!

Restaurant at Clubhouse at Hyatt Lost Pines. Started with fried cauliflower that we had to send back as it just tasted like cornmeal as it was so heavily breaded. Steak was good, spaghetti and meatball had strange tasting sauce, like a cross between tomato and salsa. Mentioned that it was my wife's birthday, but waitress didn't offer a cake as she did adjacent table. Hello there and thank you for sharing your feedback on TripAdvisor. Imagine you make a reservation at a fine dining restaurant whose on-line website and menu describes delicious food, excellent service, elegant ambiance, a quiet, intimate place in a natural setting. Imagine you are going to drive 1 1/2 hours to get there and you have invited guests to join you who will drive 2 1/2 hours to meet you there.Imagine you arrive to be told that for that day, the restaurant is actually closed and instead you are directed to ... a buffet in a high school gymnasium. Imagine you have a reservation for 4, and asked for a quiet table so you could converse with your friends and are seated at a table for ten, instead of an intimate 4 top, right in front of the kitchen doors. You likely have stayed at lower end chain motels that advertise their 'buffet' service. So imagine that when you survey this unannounced and mutated fine dining experience, you are treated to those same kinds of limp vegetables, overcooked by extended periods on steam tables, picked over, rubbery, and luke-warm-to-cold entrees, stale breads, hardened cheeses and dried cold cuts that you find in buffets on the side of our highways. Now, imagine you are billed $85 per person for this, including a 28% service charge when in fact there was no table service other than picking up your half-eaten plate of food and a refill of your water glass. So, outright fraud or just bait-and-switch? Or was it the Twilight Zone?

Very friendly, efficient, and accommodating service. Simple menus, bit plenty of variety, in this casual space. I had the broiled chicken and veggies (double portion), instead of potatoes. Delicious, filling, and a fair price. Everyone enjoyed their food, burgers, salads, and such. And the hot pretzel sticks to start looked great ... although I didn’t have any.

We ate at the breakfast buffet twice while staying at the Hyatt. They offer a variety of foods and it was all delicious. They offer an omelet station which my husband said was the best omelet he has every tasted. If you are staying at the resort, I would highly recommend Firewheel Cafe's breakfast buffet.
