Food was good. Service was a little slow and inconsistent. The interior of the restaurant is decorated with various pictures involving President Eisenhower and his wife, Mamie Eisenhower. Another Area of the restaurant has pinball games or other table games in addition to a bar and outdoor area. When we were there for dinner these areas we were not being utilized.

Based on the other reviews here and the pictures I had seen here and elsewhere, I thought this would be more like a typical bar & grill with plenty of seating and a decent size of establishment. However, that is not quite what this turned out to be.To explain, this is along the old path of US-40 from years ago and therefore is a bit lonely along this offbeat stretch of road. As such, it is not as easy to find as, say, an Applebee's just off I-70 a few miles to the north. However, if that is what you're looking for, go find Applebee's.Given this, I knew that it was not going to be as "upscale" but I figured that it would be at least a good, comfy place to get a bite. I figured that there would be decent tables and chairs, good lighting, and enough room to feel at ease. Instead, what I found when we arrived was a small building that looked like a little old farmhouse that had been turned into a bar that, when going inside, had three or maybe four small kitchen tables each with four chairs packed closely together. (Too close for four people to eat without elbows and hips hitting each other.) There were eight or so stools at the bar that was about seven feet away from the edge of the table. Additionally, there was another room that appeared to have a pool table and karaoke. The place also had banners up that said "Bikers welcome!" So, this would best be defined as a biker bar, not a bar & grill. The appearance was not so thrilling or what we were seeking. As such, we were disappointed for this aspect of the experience. The service seemed okay. The waitress didn't seem very happy or excited to be there. She never smiled and her response when I tried to make a playful joke with her was a bit rude and snooty. Both my friend and I looked at each other with bewilderment as the waitress walked away. I was willing to write off her lack of good attitude to a bad day. After all, this may have just been an off night for her. One experience is not enough to establish a pattern. However, the table service she provided was attentive and efficient: the food order arrived in a matter of just a few minutes and she kept coming by to check on our drinks or if there was anything else that we required. So, I give her good marks for that. So, now about the food. Both my friend and I ordered burgers. I got a double bacon cheeseburger while my friend ordered a farmer burger. The presentation of my burger left a bit to be desired. To start, it came in a small plastic basket like what I might expect at a fast food chain such as Dairy Queen or Culver's rather than being plated as one would expect at an establishment advertising itself as a bar & grill. Further, I expected the cheese and sauteed onions to be layered as sliced cheese melted on the patties and a bit of sauteed, caramelized onions spooned on top but what I got was liquid white cheese (of indeterminate variety and flavor: maybe Swiss, maybe Monterey Jack, definitely not mozzarella) with the onions mixed in and the mess was dripping down the patties when it arrived. I let it sit for a few minutes to congeal before eating it. Even so, it was still messy and got my hands sticky with bits of still-cooling/congealing melted cheese. Once I was able to get a bite of this, it actually tasted pretty good. The burger patties (which were the large and thin McDonalds variety rather than what one would expect from a bar & grill) were a bit saltier than I would have preferred but not so much that it was a problem. The sweet potato fries I got with the burger were okay: they were fully cooked and tasted like sweet potato fries but they had obviously been sitting under a heat lamp for a while rather than being fresh from the fryer. They also tasted a bit bland, as if they were frozen rather than cut fresh. Nothing said that they would be fresh but I would have expected better than fast food quality from a bar & grill. The burger my friend got was presented more tastefully, though still in a DQ-style plastic basket. She got a burger that had appropriate layering and a nicely-cooked egg on top. This looked more like what I would expect. From her commentary (and the fact that she finished it; she tends to be a picky eater), it seemed that she enjoyed it. The patty was still the same large and thin type as my burger had but at least her cheese was sliced and melted appropriately. She also seemed to enjoy the tater tots that she got with her basket, though they also were from the heat lamp rather than freshly cooked. So, after all this, we get the bill. For two burgers, the accompanying fries, one beer, and one pop, the bill was over $24! For a bar and grill, that would not be too outrageous (though at a bar & grill, one would have received more fries and meat than we did here for about that price). For this experience, however, I must say that was quite high. Even at Sonic, which is priced very high for the fast food industry, the amount we would have paid for two double cheeseburgers, fries, and a drink would have been around $15 and we would have received the same amount of food. Even adding in an extra dollar for the $3 beer instead of the $2 pop, that does not make enough difference to account for the high price here. Now, as for our level of comfort, both my friend and I were not exactly settled here. We are a couple of middle-class folks who came to this place expecting a bar & grill, which is something that typically attracts such middle-class types. However, what we found would best be classed as a biker dive bar. Because of this, she protected her purse and I kept an eye on everyone around in case of trouble. I also made sure that we were seated close to the door so that we could exit quickly if needed. Though the folks who frequent there may be nice and friendly, one definitely could not tell that by the way they were dressed, crowded around, and otherwise presented themselves. We finished our meals in a hurry and left as quickly as we could, being there only about 30-40 minutes from entrance to exit. Conclusion: if you want fast food quality that is easy to find, stay along I-70 and go to McDonalds. If you want a bar & grill that is a pleasant, middle-class experience, stay along I-70 and find an Applebee's, Chili's, or (for more local flavor) Henry T's. If what you want is a dive bar that caters to local bikers and that looks like it is ready for a bar brawl to start at any time, check out this place. My friend and I will not be back.Sir, let me point a few things out to you... that server was me, the owner, your playful joke to “fetch you the winning lottery numbers” was so old I kicked the slats out of my crib the first time I heard it. Sorry, me joking back that I hadn’t heard that for a full hour was considered “snotty”. I’m not a big smiler, see I have bad teeth I’m very self conscious about and frankly, my bartender and best friend had recently suffered a traumatic brain injury she will likely never fully recover from. Had you simply paid half as much attention to the fundraising posters and T-shirt’s and bracelets for sale as you had our unsavory crowd you would have realized this. Speaking of which, most of not all those bikers are veterans... men and women that served their country so you could speak your ignorant mind freely. They are also the same folks that have helped a homeless family have a Christmas, a child with cancer be able to seek treatment, and more than I have time to mention. Had you gotten a flat tire they would have been the first to change it for you. If you didn’t care for our food, that’s fine, though you’re certainly in the minority. But how dare you degrade and stereotype a group of people you know nothing about. As for our seating... there’s plenty of pictures all over the internet of the interior and exterior of our building... to include our pool table and “welcome bikers” banner hanging out front (surely you saw it when you pulled up and can in anyway?). Please stay on I-70 next time, and should you by chance happen upon Old 40 again. Keep driving... you are no longer welcome here. We have no tolerance for prejudice and bigotry of any kind. Everyone else is and always will be welcome here.

M&R isn't a fancy spot but they deliver good food at decent prices. Their chicken dishes seem to be best - the chicken fried chicken was crispy and tender and came with two sides (can't go wrong with corn and a baked potato) and the chicken tenders a massive portion. A decent choice of beer is available and about a half dozen wines by the glass or bottle. Service is very good, the decor low key and the prices very reasonable.

Walking into Amanda's is like walking back in time. The building is historic. It was probably in Abilene when Dwight D. Eisenhower was growing up there. The atmosphere is warm and cozy. Art, photographs, and other items decorate the bistro. You can watch as the chefs prepare your food. There are various items on the menu along with desserts. No one should walk away hungry. The food is awesome with wholesome ingredients and down-home flavor. If you are every in Abilene, Kansas, I suggest you stop by Amanda's for lunch.

We were on a day trip to Abilene to see the new and improved Eisenhower Museum (it is really great!) and needed lunch first. We stopped at Joe Snuffy's based on all the reviews and it didn't disappoint. This was a Monday so we didn't think it would be very busy but the place was packed when we got there. We were waiting in line and a couple sitting near the door asked us to join them at their table. They were locals and we had a wonderful time getting to know them while we enjoyed our meal. I had the Rueben which was very good and my husband had the chicken fried steak and thought it was excellent. Not to large or to small - just the right size. The roll was homemade and he loved that. We split the apple pie for dessert. Trinity was our server and did a fabulous job taking care of us. Everything on the menu sounded good and the service is pretty quick. We look forward to dining here again in the future.

Coleslaw and creamed corn just the best. Pickles, Apple rings, Peaches start you out. Ice cream included with your meal. Just off I-70 Abilene exit with plenty of parking. Can be crowded on weekend. Wonderful staff who know how to serve. This is the best.
