From arriving and being greeted by guests we’d met a few years ago at Mark & Peter’s previous Chambre d’hote and Mark & Peter themselves, we felt totally at home and relaxed. The restoration of the Maison has been nothing but truly remarkable. Beauitful, well decorated and appointed rooms offering the chance to fully relax. This visit allowed us to visit and explore a new area of France and what a delight the beautiful villages are, with the magnificent Dordogne river meandering its way through. No visit to France is complete without mentioning the food and wine. Without highlighting any restaurants here, the food you are served up at Maison De Beaumont is as good as any restaurant we ate at. Peter you are a magnificent chef! Thank you for your hospitality, your day trip ideas and for staying in France! Until next time……

We spend three nights here and the hosts, Alain and Isabelle are delightful. The history of the Abbey is amazing. To stay somewhere that has hosted pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostella almost a 1000 years ago is amazing. The restoration is beautifully done. The view is gorgeous, and the food is fabulous. The Dordogne region of France is not to be missed. All the Bastide towns are so delightful. Be sure to visit a market day.

Domaine de Cugnac

Farm stay chambres d'hotes (bed and breakfast) in the heart of the Perigordine countryside. 2 Spacious en-suite bedrooms overlooking indiginous woodland. Peaceful, calm and beautiful all year round. In the summer you can chill on the big terrace overlooking the garden, swim and laze around the pool, and walk along the woodland paths which start right at the house. In the winter these same woodland walks have a different feel as the trees lose their leaves, but just as stunning in their own way. On cold days there is always a wood burning stove in our big kitchen to warm you up on your return with a cup of tea. Spring time brings a host of wild flowers in the woods, starting often in late February with the best display of daffodils imaginable. Cugnac has a long and fascinating history. There is a dolmen in the woods clearly going back to pre-history, and we have had visits from hisorians from all over the world to investigate. Our house is built on the huge vaulted stables, all that is left of the old Chateau de Cugnac, dating from the 13th century. Under the house there is a rock cave with a water source forming an underground pond - a big favourite with visitors and historians alike. We are a small organic arable farm, with our own land and woods completely surrounding the house. We work in partnership with our organic dairy farm neighbours, and often have some of their cows and calves in our fields. We have two horses of our own who have been with us for the past 20 years and are now enjoying peaceful retirement. Completely free range, our hens provide quite delicious eggs for your breakfasts. We have a wide range of fruit trees of old varieties, and we make all our own jams from their fruit. Another neighbour provides us with honey from his lovingly managed hives. Everything is local! We make our own bread from flour milled by a retired farmer 8 kms away. He grows his own selection of wheat to make the best bread flour possible. He loves to show people around the watermill that he restored on the river Dropt, and it is fun to see just how the flour is made, as it was in ancient times. From Cugnac you are 10 - 15 minutes drive to some of the most famous bastide villages of the Dordogne - Monpazier, Beaumont, Villereal, Issigeac, Castillones, each with its weekly market for local produce. These villages also have restaurants for all tastes which we are happy to book for you in advance of your arrival if you let us know your tastes. We can also prepare tables d'hotes for you if you prefer to stay in on some evenings. In the summer there are great picnic spots on the property. This is a lovely area to explore by bike. There is hardly any traffic, and wonderful countryside to enjoy as you cycle. We have nice bikes that you can borrow while you are here.

A wonderful slice of French rural life

Reviewed By heskethmark

Where to start really? Looking for our own property in the area we had planned on staying at a few places while we looked around. Having enjoyed our first stay so much we have now stayed at Cugnac on 3 separate occasions during our search, as we felt we would not find anywhere better to stay. Don & Marie made us feel so welcome and freely shared their knowledge and experience providing us with so much information on the area and advice on living in France. The breakfasts were wonderful with homemade jams, yoghurts and the freshly laid eggs, along with locally produced bread & croissants. The rooms were clean, very comfortable and the surroundings beautiful, peaceful and so relaxing during each of the different seasons we have stayed. We highly recommend staying at Cugnac; be it for a short stay, longer holiday or if like us you are thinking of buying a property in the area. It’s been great to see people living the lifestyle that many of us aspire to. Having now bought our own renovation project nearby we will call in regularly to buy those organic free-range eggs. Cugnac is now where our family stay when they come to visit us and no doubt we will book to stay for the odd night or 2, for a bit of luxury, during the worst parts of our renovation. A wonderful slice of French rural life with genuine hosts that immediately make you feel at home.
