Arizona, United States Food Guide: 5 Southwestern food Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Flagstaff

August 13, 2019 Osvaldo Hartline

Reviews on Southwestern food in Flagstaff, Arizona, United States. Astounding natural wonders, invigorating outdoor recreation and fascinating cultural attractions make Flagstaff the perfect getaway to rejuvenate the body and replenish the mind. Set at the base of the beautiful San Francisco Peaks, and surrounded by lush national forests, the city provides ample opportunity for fresh air fun. Spring, summer and fall bring hikers, campers and mountain bikers, while winter draws skiers and ice skaters. But don't let a focus on the "good old outdoors" fool you. Fostered by the local university, Flagstaff is also chock-full of educational and cultural attractions. Be sure to see the award-winning permanent exhibit "Native Peoples of the Colorado Plateau" at the Museum of Northern Arizona. The Pioneer Museum offers a glimpse of what life was like for the early settlers of the region and includes a 1929 Baldwin locomotive in its collection. The city also has an arboretum and a planetarium. The entire area is a living anthropology and geology lesson, with ancient Native American ruins and stunning scenery at the Wupatki and Walnut Canyon National Monuments, just waiting to be explored.

We’re from Texas and realize the Mexican food here in Arizona is not Tex-mex like we’re used to but we have found places we enjoy well enough. This wasn’t one of them and really disappointed after reading the other reviews. One person ordered a chimichanga and it was soggy with unusual taste, my husband had beef enchiladas that were greasy, another person had vegetable enchiladas which were okay but the black beans tasted like right out of the can. I had taquitos and they were ok but again a different taste. Three of us received our food after a considerable wait and my husbands arrived 10 minutes later with no apology or explanation for the delay. The chips and salsa were very good. $30 for two meals with only water and disappointing food was a real let down. Hello BryceSAWe are very sorry! ☹You are correct. We investigated your complaint and found that due to a busy night an inexperienced cook was trying to help the other cooks and many mistakes were made on some orders, including yours. This is not how we usually prepare food at Agave. If you are in or near Flagstaff, please contact us because we want to invite you back and buy you dinner. We know that this can not make up for the bad meal you had but at least you can have a better meal this time. [email protected]

Recommended by hotel staff. Probably the best Mexican cuisine I've eaten. I had the Grande Burrito and spouse the Cheese Quesadilla. Both dishes tasted fresh and home made and very tasty. Not like a chain restaurant. Locally owned. House margarita was excellent. Highly recommend.

La Fonda Mexican Restaurant

Reviewed By arizonaroadie

La Fonda in east Flagstaff is the kind of Mexican food restaurant that you can count on for traditional rice and beans, enchiladas, tacos, tamales and burritos. It's been around since the 1950s and remains popular. The place was full on a rainy Monday night and it's a big restaurant. The shredded beef taco was excellent. The meal started with good ships and a salsa with just the right amount of kick. And La Fonda has a good selection of domestic and Mexican beers on tap and bottles. The combo plate I ordered included a warm soapapilla with honey but it was too full to enjoy it.

Bandera Craft Tacos & Margaritas

There's Mexican food, then there's Bandera Craft Tacos. This is a new place in downtown Flagstaff. Word of mouth is that it is great. That is absolutely correct. Very fresh and imaginative dishes. The decor is simple but the old building has such charm that nothing much else is needed. We sampled two tacos: Carne Asada and Adobo chicken. Deep flavor on the protein, avocado creama with pickled onions added to the complexity. The special salad of the day was the best salad I've had, possibly ever. Crisp romaine, Adobo chicken, cotijo cheese, fried tortilla strips and a citrus dressing with some heat. Fabulous!
