Andalucia, Spain Food Guide: 10 Spanish food Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Jerez De La Frontera

May 22, 2020 Matilde Konrad

Find out what Spanish restaurants to try in Jerez De La Frontera. Southwest of Seville, Jerez is a well-heeled place. It’s the home of the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art and its famous dancing horses; if you’re on a budget or can’t be there for a formal performance, it’s worth dropping in to catch a morning training session. The other major reason to visit Jerez is to sample its most famous product—sherry. You can do this at a number of bodegas associated with the world’s best-known brands, including Bodegas Tio Pepe, The House of Sandeman, Jerez, and Pedro Domecq. They’ll soon have you knowing your amontillado from your oloroso. There’s also an Alcázar, dating back to the time of the Almohads, which features a small mosque, now the chapel of Santa María Real.

Premises were originally the home of the Gonzales Biass family- the premises have been lovingly restored and this restaurant has the wow factor on all levels. Their biggest achievement is undoubtedly the wonderful dishes that are presented from their kitchen - presentation on plate is excellent. However a very close second is the business ethics - they employ many people on the team who have learning difficulties - this gives them an amazing and deserved opportunity and they most certainly deliver. A business worth supporting on ALL levels. A unique dining experience. Impossibly romantic premises when lit up at night.

My wife and I have a second home in Jerez. A friend had recommended this place. When we arrived it was crowded but there was one table for two free which my wife and I took. We were then told that the table was reserved but that we could put our name on a list for tables as they became free. We stood at the bar and had a couple of beers. We noticed that some larger parties who arrived after us were being given tables. After an hour my wife enquired when we were likely to be called and the manager said that we had been called but we had not responded. This was untrue as we had been waiting at the bar listening for a call. The moral is beware of a list reservation system which doesn’t work or doesn’t work fairly. The visit was not improved by a barman trying to charge 4 Euros for the second round of beers ordered rather than the 2.60 which we had been charged for the first round. We left in disgust with empty stomachs.

Our friends had booked this foodie restaurant , and after eating at Mantua a couple of nights before we were reticent about this fine dining experience . This was in even more sharp focus when checking their website no menu hints were available other than two fixed price menus. Upon our arrival we were asked for any food allergies and upon the small listing we gave ,were told none was on that evening menu so all was well ! We chose the "Follow White Rabbit "menu and the 25 Euro wine pairing . The first wine was a Cava with the first of nine savoury courses and two dessert courses , I personally declined this, as I am no fan of Cava and the excellent friendly Sommelier Carmen immediately substituted a dry sherry for me whilst the other three in the party enjoyed the Cava. I will cut to the chase the meal including a different wine with every course (9 savoury plus 2 dessert ) cost 193 euro for two people and we were all thoroughly impressed by the excellent quality of the dishes skilful preparation and wine pairing of a superb meal. The restaurant was nearly full the preparation of the courses is in an open kitchen in the centre of the restaurant , the service was excellent and if these people have not applied for a Michelin star then they should do so. For the meal we had , the ambiance and the service it was excellent value which I would thoroughly recommend.I am posting the menu and some photographs of the courses for you to make your own judgement, but bottom line was it was pricey BUT WELL WORTH IT Thank you Jeff, We are very glad to hear that you enjoyed the evening with us. We are always open to adapting to allergies or personal tastes as much as our menu allows it. We hope to see you back soon

Mediterranean food with an andalusi air. "The cuisine of the senses"

We did our research, carefully booked a table, and arrived to find we were the only diners in the restaurant that evening. Such a shame for the owners because the food was incredible. Nonetheless, we were treated very well, the food was fantastic - a real mix of Spain and North Africa and the waiter couldn't have been more friendly or helpful. It deserves to be full every night, if there is any justice, it will be. Go, you won't regret it.

La Nueva Riva, just off a quiet little square near to the Cathedral, was my best find in Jerez and is well worth seeking out. Unlike most other places in town, this little restaurant / bar opens at mid-day rather than the usual 13-30. I selected three tapas from an extensive list, (many other more substantial dishes available), which, with a desert and two ‘jarras’ of ice cold beer, came to 17.50 euros. A small glass of PX sweet sherry came on the house. ALL were excellent and very nicely presented.Although not much English is spoken by the staff and regrettably, no Spanish whatsoever from my side, ordering was fun. Menus come on clipboards, one in Spanish and one in English. As I selected from my version, the head honcho compared it with his to take the order, which was spot on. Just a warning, the ice cold beer comes in a deeply frozen glass. The glass had my bottom lip out like a lavatory seat before I could part it. You will not be disappointed.

The tasting menu with wine pairing is a perfect opportuntiy to try different foods and wines that you would not necessarily order off an a la carte menu. It turned out to be a wonderful discovery here. Mix of meat, fish and veggie. They will do a veggie menu but prefer that they are notified in advance. Quality fresh ingredients presented extremely well on plate. Professional yet friendly service. The film - the 100 foot journey- increased the appeal and interest in sea urchins. Go and satisfy your curiosity here ! Just beautiful.
