The Glasshouse

Reviewed By BarnabyHilbourne - Kingston upon Thames, United Kingdom

Every part of our meal at the Glasshouse last weekend was brilliant. The greeting when we entered was welcoming and attentive and this went for the service all the way through. Then the drinks menu was varied, good value and delicious when we'd received our drinks too. Then most importantly, the food was excellent. Our ox cheek and polenta starter was tender, generously glazed and very moorish (though a bigger portion would have been great!); my pork was perfectly cooked, pink, and came with a delicious apple sauce and reduced jus, while my partner's venison, with tiny venison pie looked amazing. Both desserts, a chocolate and hazelnut tart and a poached pineapple with pear sorbet were stunning,a s were the petit fours which accompanied the rich black coffee that we finished with. can't wait to go back!

Le Vacherin

A recently refurbished bistro with a traditional French ambience, Chef Malcolm John's Le Vacherin restaurant has received accolades from Michelin, Harpers & Queen and Tatler magazine. Awarded a prestigious Egon Ronay star in November 2005, Le Vacherin is a highly regarded destination for fine French food and wine in a friendly atmosphere. Just a four-minute walk from Chiswick Park underground station, Le Vacherin has been introducing timeless Parisian cuisine to Chiswick's dining crowd for over five years. The menu changes frequently, yet always makes use of the freshest ingredients to capture the irresistible tastes of authentic French cuisine. Each dish is reasonably priced and prepared with seasonal ingredients of the highest quality. Children are welcome to dine at Le Vacherin. A private dining room is available for larger parties.

We - an elderly couple with many visits to France under our belts - came for lunch with a Travelzoo offer and had a very good experience, delicious food and nostalgia being highly enjoyable experiences. The first plus was the restaurant exterior, a handsome dark façade facing a Chiswick green outlined with trees. Inside there are dark drapes, mirrors, bistro art all offset by abundant white linen. Music was playing but it was 'French' type cool jazz, very acceptable and the buzz of conversation from younger people added another layer. The atmosphere remained calm and civilised, thanks to experienced head waiter and friendly attentive service.
The current Travelzoo offer is a bargain for food of this quality and level of choice.
My Jerusalem artichoke soup was the highlight of my meal, studded with bits of truffle, generously so for a luxury ingredient. My husband was pleased with his smoked salmon roulade with horseradish and beetroot. Very good pheasant followed, my rabbit leg in mustard sauce was rather bland (the meat - is it difficult to source tasty rabbit?)
Brioche bread and butter pudding was a delicious Anglo-French classic, my chocolate bavarois was fine - more of a mousse I thought, would have liked more of the spiced kumquat compote which was a lovely seasonal idea.
The chef had excellent ideas which were well executed.
I can't comment on value or prices outside the Travelzoo offer, but we envied the locals who can call this their neighbourhood place. This was much more special than visiting any chain, so much more character and attention to detail.
We are returning soon.

Q Verde

Only six minutes away from the Kew Botanic Gardens, Q Verde is a popular Mediterranean restaurant on Sandycombe Road that has a delightful villagey vibe. Food lovers flock to Q Verde for the wholesome menus and outstanding service, and this family-run restaurant genuinely makes you feel at home the moment you step inside the door. We love the terra cotta coloured walls, black board menus and the general rustic ambience, and the moreish menu is filled with temptations such as the fried chorizo sausage served with crispy rosti potatoes for starters, the fillet of pork with caramelized apples and a Marsala jus for mains, and the traditional tiramasu for dessert.

Booked only last minute but they managed to give us a table for 9 pm. Nice atmosphere when we got there, very busy, but were welcomed and seated straight away. Great service throughout and not hurried even though we had a late sitting and so were one of the last to leave. Excellent artichoke and spinach bake to start and lovely calves liver perfectly pink cooked as a main. My wife had warm calamari on a rocket salad and then pasta with garlic and olive oil nicely seasoned and cooked al dents. Great light panna cotta as dessert. Along with the lovely service made for a very nice evening. Definitely recommend!

It’s the third time I visit this restaurant with my friends and the quality of food is simply amazing, probably the best Moroccan restaurant in town, really recommend this to everyone who wants some good Moroccan food. The service has improved since I first came thanks to the lovely Sabrina and Maher that gave us a very friendly service. This suggests they started looking after customer service in which they were lacking a bit to be honest. But overall what a great restaurant!!

The Express Tavern

Visited this small local pub very close to Kew Bridge railway station last week prior to attending an evening event at the nearby London Museum of Water and Steam and was pleasantly surprised. The pub's dual entrance offers the diners to the left and the drinkers to the right, though I presume that you can do both in either side. The pub welcomes both locals and new visitors with equal enthusiasm and the barman recognised us when we returned after our event for a quick bar snack and drink.
The pub has a homely period old-fashioned salon feel about it, warm lighting, pictures and mirrors on the walls and exotic houseplants adorn every corner of the place. The bar serves both halves of the pub and a background music is supplied by a record player playing vinyl behind the bar.
There are a lot of local beers on tap and the gin selection is pretty large and diverse with many unusual brands. The food menu is equally wide with mains, burgers, pizzas and snacks. They host weekly offers: Mondays is 2-for-1 Pizza day; Wednesday is Steak Out night; Thursday is their Ribs night. Food service ends at 10pm.

The food is fresh, different and really good value. It is very unassuming from the outside but the service was very efficient and friendly. The black Dahl is exceptional. A great local find. Well worth going. Really well-priced too.
We shared two starters - exceptional lamb samosas and crispy okra.
The menus is relatively small but all the better for that. They cook everything well. All the mains were delicious.
