Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection

Nestled along the dramatic Kohala Coast and in the piko, or center, of five great mountains, Mauna Lani-- meaning "mountain reaching heaven"-- is a sacred oasis where generations of families and friends have made memories together on soulful lands once cherished by the greatest of Hawaiian royalty. Greet the morning sun as it rises above the mountains’ peaks from the seat of an outrigger canoe. Talk story with friends old and new at the Great Lawn as the sounds of ocean waves and laughter mingle. Dine amongst the company of loved ones at CanoeHouse, where locals have savored the island’s bounty for decades. As you walk this storied coastline, breathe the rejuvenating salt air and swim in the crystalline waters, you feel the same mana, or spiritual energy, that first captivated legends like King Kamehameha I and Francis H. I’i Brown.

I must say that I’m very surprised at a hotel of this caliber/price to show up and find that the beach amenities are closed for a private event… apparently for the “big boss man” If mauna lani is reading this - you can do better. Please don’t take your guests for granted.

Beautiful grounds - short staffed

Reviewed By 19Cam

There is a lot of great stuff about this resort, I can see that once it was quite the jewel in the Hilton crown. The grounds of the hotel are absolutely beautiful. The landscaping team have done an amazing job maintaining and caring for the gardens. The entire ambiance of the external property and location is great. The staff we met and interacted with were great, across the resort they genuinely seemed to care and go out of their way to deliver excellent service. We were staying in Makai tower, the room was adequate but not a ‘luxury resort’ experience. There were a few nice touches like the toiletries and the leis but everything else was very generic. From the room you wouldn’t know you were in Hawaii, it could have been Pittsburgh. The hotel seems to have some MAJOR staffing issues. The buffet breakfast was closed, the bar and restaurant hours of the open locations was limited. The staff that were working were totally swept off their feet and overworked. I understand that the cost of living in Hawaii is very high and it’s therefore difficult to fill jobs, but given Hilton’s scale, perhaps they should be looking at some more creative solutions like providing staff accommodations like ski resorts do. Some elements of the resort were quite tired and needed updating. The waterfalls at the pool were closed for maintenance. There was worn paint on hand rails, peeling wallpaper in rooms etc. Nothing major but not great. From an operational perspective this is one of the few Hilton properties both owned and operated by Hilton so there’s really no excuse for anything less than the standards defined in the brand manual. Finally - personal opinion but the ‘dolphin quest’ attraction should absolutely be shut down. I know the marketing spin about how they are helping the dolphins, they they are keeping wild animals in a tiny pen by the lagoon and it’s cruel. Shut it down and focus on running a top resort, you don’t need cruel animal attractions to be a great destination.

Kauna’oa 10B

So, I’m majorly biased - we are a big Mauna Kea family and have been going there since the 80s. My brother got engaged there; I got married there. It is a special place for us. So, when my father died, we returned to the Mauna Kea to celebrate his life, and instead of staying in the hotel, we opted to rent a villa thinking that it would offer us more privacy, and the on-site pool and hot tub would be more accessible for our elderly mother. We got neither. The villa itself is beautiful and well-stocked. It’s right across the golf course from the Hapuna and a short walk to the Mauna Kea. However, within 24 hours of our stay, the hot tub and waterfall drained completely, hence the rub. We had neither a functional outdoor space nor privacy as multiple teams came in to fix it, and it was not fixed by the time of our departure. A mention of this inconvenience (in the context of the exorbitant cost) at our check out was met with “Hillary will call you.” Two additional emails to the Mauna Kea since, there has been no response almost 3 months later. Summary: beautiful stocked villa but don’t expect to enjoy the private outdoor space due to non-functional pool/hot tub; poor service recovery from what once was a true Hawaiian gem

A Fabulous Resort

This is by far, one of the most wonderful, super comfortable, fabulous hotels we have ever stayed in in Kona - Hawaii. Staff: We just about connected with most of the front desk staff during our 9-day stay. They were all truly helpful, most friendly and just superb in every way. The valet staff were always getting our car quickly. They were courteous, respectful and attentive. The room service staff were always amazingly helpful, attentive and most thoughtful!!! We loved them all. Hotel Grounds: As you walk through the lobby there is a beautiful open view of the ocean. Just about anywhere in the grounds the hotel has a what I called “my own space”, where one can sit, relax and enjoy the ocean view. These “spaces” even had an outlet for charging your laptop and or a PDA. The Beach: Access to the beach is very convenient and easy to get to. The hotel provides all the towels you need, chairs and umbrella right on the beach. You can relax and then go for a swim. The snorkeling is absolutely wonderful!!! Yes, you get to see the beautiful sea turtles. I recommend to go snorkeling early in the morning and then get out of the water by around 10:30 before the tides come in. Hotel Pools: Two pools, one for the adults and the other for the kids. Plenty of umbrellas and lounge chairs. The water is wonderfully warm and very clean. Restaurants: They have a quick grab and go restaurant that also had terrific coffee and tea. They have a formal buffet restaurant as well, where you can also order either a continental and or full breakfast. For lunch: They have a bar and a pub food that you can order. You can also sit by the pool and order food to be brought by the poolside. For dinner, they have a formal restaurant called the Meridia, great food and cocktails. We truly had a wonderful time staying at the Westin Hapuna Beach. To us the staff’s warm hospitality made our stay extra special!!!

Room for improvement

Had a 2 night stay here, I am an Expat from Dubai so know a thing or two about hotels. In general the hotel falls short for a few reasons, it does have the potential to be amazing and I think it may come some day. Frustrations - Long walk from the hotel car park to the room took me about 15 mins walking time. There is a boat or tram service which is never there when you need it, and even when it does show up it crawls along at 2 mph it’s painstakingly slow, same could be said for the boat. To ads insult to injury the Ocean tower is the last and furthest stop on the tram and each stop seems to take forever with the offloading and onboarding of new passengers. Room key intermittent fault Never works 1st or even 2nd time its touch and go wether the code reader will read the key and open the door, expect 1-2 mins of trying the key card several times before it opens the door. Massive Q’s for the coffee shop, every morning the Q for the coffee shop spans out about 30 odd people, each order takes on average 4-5 mins so you do the maths! Its takes a really long time to get to the front of the Q. Check out time is 10am!! Most places at least give you till 12, that is really poor in my opinion and could be easily rectified to change that time by management. Parking is $39 per day self park which is high considering this isn’t a city location. No maid service l! I left my room on day 1 expecting a maid service with fresh towels and bed maid and nobody came, on investigation it appears you have to request this in advance, wow, amazed by this. Swimming pools are not very clean nor spacious with bits of debris in the water etc. Rooms are old and tired looking but not that bad. Shower is weak in pressure and very basic no hand held shower head, just a white plastic ball type fitting. In summary for a couple of nights at a fairly cheaper price considering location its not terrible but pretty poor in my opinion. I am quite sure people visiting the resort come with very high expectations and are disappointed every time.

Enjoyable stay

Reviewed By dbaaronson

Large rooms, we had a "partial" ocean view room which honestly was much a much better view than I would have expected. This is one of the Marriott properties that has the frosted glass window between the bathroom and the bedroom which is not my favorite setup because it allows light from the bathroom into the bedroom but other than that I have nothing negative to say about the room. We had the continental breakfast most days, I'm not sure it's worth the upcharge to the "hot" breakfast which only adds a few extra items unless maybe you are really into omelets. There was plenty of selection on the continental side. There are three main pools, all located in the same area, all have their own little quirks. The beach area is nice, very exposed to the wind and the water visibility wasn't great but not bad for a 5 minute walk from your room. Like so many Hawaiian beaches you may want to wear some form of footwear in the ocean, there are sharp rocks out there. Luau looked okay but we didn't take part in it, as it seemed like a very long experience. You can at least listen to the show from the pool at night. There are a lot of restaurant options in easy walking distance from the hotel and a little general store in the plaza across the street, as well as a shop inside the hotel.

The property is excellent, great pools, beach. The location is is convenient 20 mins drive from the Kona airport and walking distance from from the famed Queens Mall which has a host of restaurants and a shopping arcade. Thee hotel also has a tie up with the the Waikoloa Kings 9, a 27 hole course. Lovely course to play on. At the time we were in Hawaii, especially in Big Island, we saw massive labor shortage and supply chain issues. Given those conditions, I think Marriott did quite well to host us there.
