Geilo Hotel

Long weekend

Reviewed By Juliabeckerg

The town itself is gorgeous and the ski is perfect with many options for beginners. The hotel was ok, room was relatively big and clean with good view if on the left side & breakfast was diverse. However, one of the male staff on the Monday night was rude and not very helpful when at reception or ordering drinks. Also, we never got told we were not allowed to have our own beer at the hotel reception and staff literally came to “confiscate” it in a really rude way and without explaining why. There is also a fire pit outside that looks really cozy when other people were using, but this same staff did not allow us to use it at the evening. What a waste of a nice structure for the guests. Besides that, other staff were great. However would probably not come back due to that rude encounter.

Perfectly Met Our Requirements

Reviewed By TheAviator0765

We've stayed in the Ustedalen on three occasions now, I can't believe I haven't written a review until now! Four of us, me and my wife and two friends booked in to spend a week in Geilo cross-country skiing (guess few Brits do that). Booking was straightforward and any communications prior to our arrival were seamless. On arrival, we knew what we were getting but our friends were delighted. A beautiful, spacious apartment for the four us with wonderful views through the large windows looking over Vestlia. Clean, warm, well appointed, and easy to relax in. Large, clean combined toilet / shower, decently appointed kitchen for our self-catering requirements with lots of storage, utensils, crockery and glasses, and comfortable beds to ensure a good night's sleep after a day of pretty busy physical exercise. We were so happy in our apartment or out in the mountains that we didn't use any of the facilities in the hotel's reception building, so sorry, can't comment on those. The location might not suit all as it's on the western fringe of Geilo. We had a car, but for alpine skiers, it's on the ski-bus route, so that's convenient. Walking into the town centre takes about 15 minutes. Now I have seen other reviews that are critical as it is frequented by bus-tour parties. During our stay, the guests all seemed to be intent on skiing. But this is Norway, and the (summer) tour-bus market is fundamental to the holiday industry, so the Ustedalen is certainly not unique in accommodating them. Would we stay again? Certainly, and looking forwards to visit #4!

Nice cabins for a short stay in the summer

We rented a cabin for a short stay alaong the road in the summer holiday. We also rented bed linen. The cabin was nice, practical and clean. It is not far from local groceries stores and the children loved the nearby playground. A recommendable place for families.

Nice resort

Reviewed By Mia A

This was a very nice resort! The staff were really nice and helpful. The apartment was big and roomy. The stay was rather expensive. The apartment was not clean. The showerdrain was full of hair and it was rather disgusting. The rest of the apartment seemed clean, but who knows how clean it actually was... The resort is little far from Geilo center so it was impossible for us to walk downtown with two small children.

Beware or the expensive cleaning fee. Keys are not in the house.

Reviewed By 96visah

I made a 60€ non-refundable booking, The I realised they'll charge 500Nok or about 50€ cleaning fee per stay. So in this case an economical one night room became expensive. Being frustrated I went elsewhere. Now some weeks later they are debiting my credit card 111€ for this 60€ room + cleaning the unused room. The information about this add-on fee was on small print and almost impossible to see when booking. It is there if you are really really careful. I've been promised a 50€ refundfor excess billing, but in my humble opinion this is not the way to run a hotel and deal with customers. Maybe we foreigners are just stupid gullible tourists? I'd go elsewhere if I were You.. Ps. The keys are not in the house, and the distance is longish if you are not with a car.

This is the worst hotel we have experienced. Here we were to experience a new celebration for the new year of the whole family, Friday to Sunday !. We were 10 pieces. The children are from 4 to 15 years old. Our expectations of the hotel should be fine, until we arrived. They write on the ad that they have a slalom slope right outside, and yes they have, but which is not in operation due to it becoming too expensive to produce snow as they said. And we have been looking forward to this. The sauna was not in operation either. We had 4 course food which tasted very good on the night before New Year. We went down to the basement for food, there was dance floor and music. and it was just us in the family who were down there and no one else. It looked more like a very large living room with lots of sofas. Since it was just us down there, we asked to change music, since they only played old-fashioned music that the kids did not like. They did not. An old man who worked there went up and back. The kids were bored. There was no play or play for the kids. The kids saw that there was ping pong there. When the ball bounced at the door, the old man took the ball and shook his head. We asked if we could borrow to play. No, he said. Then the kids sat on the couch again and got bored. Eventually my son came down and took some soda so we could have a drink there. The old man took all the soda on the table. I walked over to him and asked why he did it. What I got was an answer from him that I was simply rude. I did not quite understand what he meant and asked him. He said we are in a hotel and why should we bring any drinks down. He also told me if I have never been to a hotel before. Then I asked him to get the soda back and put it back in the room. He said I was very rude for us to take down the soft drinks in the disco, which we thought was a large living room for the guests who were there. We were told that we could buy soft drinks wherever we wanted. We did not show that, because the bar was closed. Then we bought soft drinks there and waited until 12 o'clock so we can see the racks. We went to bed after that. The next day it was down to town and slalom all day, or until four o'clock. Came back to the hotel, nothing to do one that the kids are watching their respective phones, or watching tv. They had neither a card nor a game that could be borrowed, nor anything that performed any activity with the children. Then we agreed to go home instead, with 4 hours drive. We were actually supposed to be there until Sunday. It is a great pity that this happened. It was the worst customer service I have experienced, and poor offer for families. We will never go here again and do not recommend for families..

Could use an update but good value for money

Reviewed By Ievoo

We also stayed here in 2012, and back then it was already an outdated hotel. In the meantime, the beds and a bit of furniture is replaced, but all other is exactly the same. Even a pons-card to enter the building and the room is the same. Since the last 30 years those are hard to find, but it still works. The view from the hotel is good, the room is clean and the breakfast is also good. It was priced around 100 euro's and most nearby hotels are much more expensive, so it is nice that there are still some affordable hotels over there that are still good. The only bad thing, was the restaurant owned by the hotel, where you could have diner. That was too much money for a very crappy burger, so go somewhere else for diner!
