Disappointing room but beautiful park and fantastic hiking

Reviewed By Andrea H

I didn’t read the prior reviews before staying here. If I had, I likely wouldn’t have come as they are generally pretty poor with regards to housekeeping and room issues. For the most part, we experienced the same. We stayed in a suite with a kitchenette area. Room was very large, with a separate living room, small dining table, desk, microwave, mini fridge and sink. It was in the old part of the Inn and generally “outdated”. The ac did not work in the family room, it only blew hot air. We opened the windows to get fresh air instead since it was a good temperature outside. One of the bedroom windows wouldn’t open due to damage/split/swollen frame. The windows that did open were filthy, tons of dead bugs and dust. Pretty gross. We’re pretty sure there was a mouse in either the ceiling or the ductwork above the bedroom as we heard steady scratching type noises all night long. We did advise the front desk and maintenance came and supposedly placed a mousetrap while we were gone one day. Despite the shortcomings with the room, I’d say we still enjoyed our stay. The park itself was really pretty and the hiking was phenomenal. The town of Madison is really quaint and we spent some time exploring there. If we returned I’d inquire about booking a room only in the more modern section.

A top-notch hotel for a small historic town

We spent two days in Madison for a short “vacation” and discovered this Inn by chance, on the recommendation of the baristas at a local coffee shop. Surprisingly, although they live in town, they had stayed there because it is so nice. The Fairfield Inn is located in an ideal spot on the Ohio River, fronted by a manicured lawn. The view from rooms on the front side is quite nice, of the ever-changing Ohio River. We stayed on the 4th floor, with very high ceilings and original wooden beams obvious throughout the room. Some of them even have old graffiti etched into them. The room was well appointed and had the look and feel of a high-end hotel. The lobby is spacious and modern, with a large open breakfast area and an equally large lounge area with bar. Check-in was very pleasant, and the young woman was as accommodating as possible. We had a drink in the lounge area, and the offerings were quite good and it was a pleasant place. The breakfast offerings included hot and cold items and fresh fruit. Staff constantly ensured that the area was clean, and they cleared tables efficiently. This must be the flagship of the entire Fairfield Inn line, as it is one of the nicest hotels/motels we’ve stayed in over the past twenty years.

Conveniently (5 minutes) located to the West of Old Madison, Rockin Thunder Boat Tours and Clifty Falls state park and about 5 minutes to the Southwest of New Madison (with all the fast food places). Everything at the motel worked and was clean. Bed frame looked at little worn but serviceable (no bugs). King sized bed was comfy, linens clean and unstained. TV in good condition. Set the clock on the microwave so I wouldn't have to crane my neck looking at the bedside clock. I had trouble with the hot water in the shower, the wife did not. I give it an easy 5-stars.

Enjoyed the view from the room overlooking the town and Ohio River. The building has some years on it but it had historic charm value to it. The breakfast bar was decent and had a good choice of food and there was plenty to eat. Here's the problem we had with the hotel. One of the desk clerks seriously needs to work on her people skills because she doesn't have any. We were travelling with another couple and we asked if there was a chance to have a room close to our friends. Instead of explaining how the room are assigned, we got a whole bunch of attitude of what we shoulda, coulda done to be next to our friends. The next day a tornado siren went off and one our friends when down to the clerks desk to ask what should do. The same clerk we had problems the day before was on the desk. She had no idea what the safety protocols were and told our friend that you're on your own. We probably give the hotel a 4 or 5 rating but because of this one clerk (who should be fired) we're giving a 3 rating.

STAY AWAY

Claimed to be smoke free. Our room smelled so bad 2 cans of febreeze did not do the job. I was afraid to speak up because they were sold out dou to the boat races so we just dealt with it. Stains on bathroom ceiling tiles indicating water issues. White pail on “patio” filled with cigarette butts. The reason for the smell. Very old linens and bedcovers. Bed cover had holes in it. Was told pool was closed due to chlorine issues but found out it has been closed for a long time. If there had been another room in town I would have left. In a similar citation I think I Willis go to Carrollton before I stayed here again.

I can say that the highlight of the trip is going to have to be Heather who worked in the breakfast bar. She was an absolute delight and she made sure that everything was refilled very quickly. The only real con that I would give was that The of the morning that we were leaving and we were taking a shower the water was not hot at all as a matter of fact it was almost cold. The breakfast was a nice breakfast they did have eggs and they had buttery biscuits which were quite delicious, gravy, and I do believe turkey sausage. They had a very cute game that was going on at the front desk where they stated that they lost a Christmas mouse and if you find it you get a reward so I thought that was very very cute.
