7 Specialty lodgings in Loire Valley: Best hotel deals for 2023

April 25, 2023 Rebbecca Marino

Old world villages and storybook chateaux bedeck the Loire, once fought over by Gauls, Romans, Visigoths and even Attila the Hun. Rent bikes and roll through the lush valley, visiting fortresses in Amboise and Angers, UNESCO-designated Chartres Cathedral and the Gothic cathedral in Nantes. Musee Jules Vernes houses replicas of inventions designed by the futuristic author. Pay respects to other former residents: the Romans in Tours, the cave dwellers of Touraine, and the liberator of Orleans, Joan of Arc.

Our room was small and on the ground floor, although the window opened - full marks there was no security lock. You couldn't leave it open at night. Comfortable bed and bedding, friendly staff and 24hour reception. Good size parking but not secure.

We had a family room with a double and bunk beds. It was cool and clean, just what you need on a quick stopover. Finding room was a bit difficult, but electronic chack in was simple and convenient for anytime arrival. At €78 a night for a family, you can't complain!

Avoid this place!

I only stayed here one night as I was on a tour. The cramped room was acceptable but the smell from the toilet was disgusting - it was a vacuum style toilet which should be ok but clearly wasn't. There were nasty midges buzzing around too which made for a very unpleasant stay. I requested an air freshener but they didn't have one. They showed no concern whatsoever. We dined in the bar which was ok apart from the flies pestering us! The pizza was tasty. Incidentally, the photos of the rooms on the net bare no resemblance to our room! Breakfast was really basic too. We should have gone to the Ibis on the opposite corner.

La Maison de Saumur

Classy chambres: clean, chilled, comfortable, convivial

Reviewed By MikeyG53

Day 15 and our 8th hotel on our France 2019 trip and we had reached Saumur, and thus a return to the Loire after a couple of days on the Vienne at Chinon. This was the fourth Chambres d’Hôtes we have stayed in on this trip and it was a definite find, it is however hidden-away in the backstreets in the middle of Saumur. On-street parking was easy to find not too far away. The building has a rather austere frontage with big, dark and grubby solid wooden doors of about 4mtrs high. What lies beyond is really pleasant. A courtyard that was obviously a driveway into the back of the property that is now completely enclosed, including a roof: all very tidy and functional. A door to the left led into what is a handsome and substantial town-house on three floors. This was very tastefully decorated and furnished, unfussy, uncluttered, very clean and polished. It was also agreeably cool after being out wandering around the town for a couple of hours after lunch. Our host spoke enough English to give us all the information we needed for our stay, plus he was very helpful providing a list of restaurants that are open on a Sunday evening. He recommended the restaurant at which we dined later that evening. A further list of wine Domains was also available as was a full booklet of information about the hotel and its services. We resolved breakfasting times and confirmed preferences for tea or coffee etc. We were also offered the use of a private garden at the back of the house. We were shown to our 2nd floor room via not too narrow, straight flights of stairs. After the tiny room in our Chinon hotel this room was enormous with a large bed, 4 comfortable chairs, a desk with a lamp, pencils and paper, a fitted wardrobe, a small occasional table, and bedside cabinets with lamps. Again, the decoration was spotless and tasteful. We were at the front of the house and the window could be opened and the curtains drawn to limit early-morning daylight. The combined en-suite bathroom/WC was, like the rest of the house, very tastefully decorated, with a sunlight tube. The shower cabinet was large but I found the flat untextured shower tray quite slippery. Everything was very clean and ordered and all the usual facilities were to be found. The sink unit sat below a large mirror and the pedestal cabinet featured two large drawers. There was a very small and handy foot stool and two useful big double wall-mounted hooks provided. No hairdryer was provided. Quality towels, soap and shampoo were available. At night when you moved from one room to another, via the little private connecting corridor, lights came on automatically fading up and fading back down again. This feature saves searching for light switches in the dark and helps save energy, because these lights do not get left switched on. All the stairs in the public areas also have sensor-controlled lighting. The bed was comfortable but I found the bolster pillow didn’t suit me, I need two pillows because of a long-standing neck problem and the second pillow didn’t sit on top of the bolster very well. Sleep was however good because it was so quiet at night and it was cool as well. Street-lighting which illuminated the room went off at about midnight. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel and it is easy to negotiate a connection. Breakfast was on one table shared with the guests of other rooms and we met and enjoyed talking to a very pleasant German couple. The breakfast room is again very agreeably decorated and appointed room. Our host prepared a small fruit salad for us and there were pastries, yoghurt, and fine artisan bread with preserves. The tea bags offered featured some good Yorkshire black tea.
