Modern Hotel with spacious rooms

Walking The Via de la Plata this hotel was ALL the way through the town and virtually out the other side - however it was sooooo worth it! Pilgrim hostel this was not - it was bright, airy modern and spacious. We actually felt a bit on the grubby side going in - but what a treat for the price. Nice shower and a/c. Bar and small shop downstairs. Friendly staff who spoke some English.

We loved it. We got it for a reasonable price. Staff lovely, room clean and quite a buzz around the place because loads of locals use it. The food was good too. Really enjoyed sitting outside watching the world go by. Food not too expensive and the Iberian pork cheek stew is to be recommended

Perfect location for visiting the city. Price- quality is perfect in balance. Clean rooms, new towels every day, good WiFi and friendly people. They clean the rooms everyday, store your luggage when checked out and there is a 24 hours occupied reception desk. Well done.

The room we stayed in was unbearably hot as the heating was on full and we were unable to amend it. This was made significantly worse by the plastic sheets on the beds. The beds were without a doubt the most uncomfortable we've ever slept in, like sleeping on a rock. There was only one working plug socket and it was in the bathroom. There was also no hot water, so we were unable to shower. Dinner was mixed, the starter was mediocre at best but the main of steak and chips was lovely. The "continental" breakfast consisted of one slice of toast with either jam or meat paste. The hotel also came with a dog, which when we went for an evening walk, tried to attack us. All in all, not a pleasant stay. We would not return.

Hostal DP El Pilar

En Camino

Reviewed By mummyhatter

Now I normally prefer not to post a poor review on the basis that if it’s that bad it can’t be helped. I penned (offline) a very critical review of this place. Then I reflected. These are difficult times; people are struggling; hotels have been closed for months etc. But this one had more promise than most. On this trip it is the most expensive I have stayed in (it’s a post-COVID camino so you expect that there will be little choice). And first appearances are good - 2 star Hostal; refurbishment with EC money (admittedly in 2000); and there it ends. The ‘welcomer’ was anything but. Cash required not card. The room looked ok and the towels were clean, but the shower could best be described as ‘tired’. The shower seals were perished and hanging in ribbons; the shower-gel container fell off the wall when I applied pressure to the dispenser; the promised free WiFi barely extended to the room; the toilet wouldn’t flush. I telephoned the help-number in reception and the owner came. He went and fixed the toilet. I quizzed him about the WiFi. His reaction? “Not my fault.” So back to my earlier observation: these are people under pressure doing what they can with the resources available to them.
