6 hotels in Virginia City: Best hotel deals for 2023

July 15, 2022 Layne Dawes

You won't find big chain superstores or fast food restaurants in Virginia City. Instead you will find streets steeped in the history of the Gold Rush and the birth of the American West. The once silver and gold lined Comstock Lode drew thousands of miners, including American writer Mark Twain, to its promise of riches. Now the town preserves its illustrious past with tours, restored historical architecture, informative museums and commemorative events for all ages.

Worth the visit

I've been coming to this place since I was a kid. Probably every 10 years or so. In the fall of 2020 during the fires we decided to take a day trip up here since my new wife had never been. Make the trek from Tahoe over the hill for a visit. It really hasn't changed much since I was a kid (50 + years) which is a good thing. If you visit, make the effort to go to boot hill (the cemetery) at the end of town if you want to see a real old west cemetery. Also there are two ways to get here - from the Reno side and the Tahoe/Carson city side. If you are into the old west, gold country, The Tahoe/Carson city side has some very cool small, what's left of mines and other small places you can visit.

Sugarloaf Mountain Motel

Sugarloaf Mountain Motel was built as a Boarding House for Miners in 1878. Three of the 12 rooms are from the Historical Boarding House, and contain the original brick, rock, mortar, and iron windows. Guests who have stayed at the Motel insist there are 'ghosts' still roaming the property from the 1800's. The Motel includes spacious parking, outside seating with a bar-b-que, and a convenient Market; all within walking distance to downtown Virginia City.

Comfortable, Affordable and Dog Friendly to Boot!

I have stayed at the Sugarloaf Mountain Inn many times. It is a small, quaint family run hotel at the end of C St. The prices are reasonable and comparable to the other establishments in the area. It is conveniently located within a short walk from downtown and two doors down from a Mexican restaurant, which I have reviewed separately. There is an on-site convenience store, which is where the check-in counter is. The store carries regular and adult beverages, snacks and other miscellaneous items you may have forgotten or needed in your travels. There is no icemaker on site; however, there is ice available in an icebox located in the store in convenient grab bags for guests to take. The pros of staying here are by far the friendly staff. Heather, who checked me in and operated the shop during my stay, was so helpful and kind. I also met two women that tended to the rooms who were very friendly. I had my pup with me, who I bring with me on my travels and everyone here was accommodating and welcoming. I stayed in room 11 on this visit, which was a first for me, as I am usually traveling with someone and get the double room, which is number 5. Room 11 was recently updated I was told and while it is a small room, I typically am only sleeping there, so it did not bother me. The bathroom is larger than expected and the newly installed shower and tiles were a lovely update. The room had a smart TV, microwave and refrigerator. If you want coffee, bring your own, I knew this ahead of time, so that is what I did. They may have it in the shop in the morning, but the shop does not open until 8 am and I am an early riser. Parking is available in the front of your room and if for some reason the lot is full, there is parking on the street. If you have a dog, you will need to walk across the street to the empty lot to let them relieve themselves. Thank you Heather and staff for making my stay so comfortable. I am sorry my pup chewed up the roll of toilet paper, lol. I will be staying with you all again on my next visit.

We enjoyed our stay so very much! The owners were absolutely wonderful, breakfast of fresh sausage and gravy was amazing! We enjoyed the conversation with them at the breakfast table! Our room was well appointed, the entire place was beautiful, historic and inviting. We enjoyed our two nights there immensely. We would definitely plan to stay there again upon a return trip to VC Nevada!

Gold Hill Hotel

The Gold Hill Hotel is a picturesque country inn located in Gold Hill, Nevada, one mile south of Virginia City in the Comstock Historic District. It is the oldest hotel in Nevada and offers guest facilities in the original 1861 stone structure, a 1987 addition, and several separate historic buildings. Each room features a private bath and is uniquely decorated in period style with antiques and reproductions. The Crown Point Restaurant offers fine dining, and the Gold Hill Saloon provides guests with a rustic environment to relax and unwind. Called "Mark Twain's favorite bar" since his time in Gold Hill back in 1862, come back in time and enjoy your favorite libation in our historic bar.

Fascinating place for a quick stay but don't expect that much.

Booked 2 nights, left after one. It was fun for one night to stay in one of the vintage balcony rooms but the restaurant and bar were closed our second night and with no TV, spotty wifi, and deplorable options in Virginia City for dinner (seriously, the town made me ill with its blatant political bile) we chose to cut our losses and head to South Lake Tahoe. The bar was nice the first night and the restaurant was good enough. A bit surprised by the dinner rolls with what is supposed to be an upscale menu (King's Hawaiian? Seriously?) The ribeye was tasty even if 1/3 gristle and the veggies were delightful. The lobster ravioli was tasty and the creme brulee was adequate. Do not order the BLISS wine! No idea what the extra charge was for but our credit card was charged about $15 in the middle of the night. The next morning, I went for the complementary coffee in the lobby. Two coffemakers, a large water dispenser, and coffee makings were on a low coffee table. Think about it a moment. The low table with the coffee service requires squatting to dispense water into the carafe, and then you pour the carafe into the coffee maker at an exceptionally difficult angle. Then you wait while the coffee brews. More squatting to pour the coffee and you should not be surprised that there was no sugar. Considering that I'm fairly certain there were no other guests this is not acceptable. I would have asked the worker at the desk but after listening to her cough for 10 minutes I chose to drink it black. Glad we went. Won't return.

A pleasant stay in Virginia City

We were in town for the kickoff to Hot August Nights and had the pleasure of staying at Edith Palmer's Country Inn and found the entire experience to be very personable and pleasant. The proprietors provided us with a warm and welcoming experience. Each morning we were treated to hot coffee, a full continental breakfast, and wonderful conversation with Leisa about the local activities, history, and attractions. We stayed in Edith's room and found the beautiful period antique furnishings combined with the comfortable bed to provide for a wonderful stay.
