Exquisite ryokan with private onsen

Reviewed By Elizabeth T

A very cosy ryokan just beside the river and close to the centre of Kurogawa old town. We stayed in room 105 which was at the end of the ryokan and very quiet and private. They have a public and family onsen. Need to reserve the 50-min private onsen in advance and it is open until very late. The public onsen opens at 6.30am so if you are there early, you will have the whole onsen overlooking a bamboo forest all by yourself. Very therapeutic. Fantastic breakfast too.

A must visit onsen ryokan in japan!

Reviewed By tjeffreyt

It’s an iconic ryokan located at the heart of Kurokawa onsen and surrounded by the hill and forests besides running streams and waterfalls. The design of building and the decorative traveled me back to the ancient Japanese era. Every corner of the ryokan is a photo taking point. We arrived around 12.30pm and kept out luggages at the ryokan as the check in time is 3pm. Upon checking in, the friendly and helpful staff show us around the dining area, the onsen area and brought us to our room. Our luggage already inside our room. We’re served for the green tea and snacks. There are 4 onsens at the ryokan for the guests to explore, including the most famous cave onsen! Kaiseki dinner was served in the dinner room. Good spread and very delicious. Breakfast was served in the dining area at ground floor. The ryokan was kind enough to send us to the bus station on the day we left. I had a wonderful time at this lovely onsen ryokan. We will come back soon!

We serve free coffee and tea at our lounge. You can also enjoy 3 different types of family hot springs for free while you are staying.

Disappointing

Reviewed By SCP905

This is an old onsen as they describe themselves, but not with traditional over the top service as you might expect. We paid a premium for a private bath that was lovely with quite a large room. We were glad we had it because when we went to the communal hot bath you had to wait on line to use one of only 3 places to wash. Lightning is an issue if you want to read anything other than a backlit device. The food was average for a ryokan and served so quickly that dishes piled up on our table getting cold before we could eat them. When we asked them to please slow down, they simply let the food get cold in the kitchen. Our biggest complaint was the attitude of the English speaking hostess. She was abrupt, pushy and really made us angry when she demanded we pay in cash even though our confirmation clearly stated Visa. If you have never had a ryokan experience, this would give you a chance to experience an old one with pretty gardens but don’t expect more.

This is the second time we go to this outstanding Ryokan and it was another amazing experience. Its location within the centre of Kurosawa is perfect and allows you to walk to the other onset. There is poking available if yo come by car. The rooms are typical Japanese style with the comfort you need as well as privacy. The onsen is magnificent, next to the river and you can relax in the bath while listening to the water fall. What makes also this place unique is the delicious dinner and breakfast, where every details and taste are amazing. And if there is something you don't like, the ryokan will send you an email before to ask your preference. Finally, the manager was so nice and made us feel valued. She remembered us from the year before, helped us find great places and explained the best way to make tea after giving us as gift one of the finest tea from Kyushu. we will come back for sure!

Exceptionally clean rooms (take this for granted as you travel in Japan but here it is another level), amazing 10 courses breakfast and dinner (maybe more) with chef's special menu each time I revisited, and the top of the world indoor /outdoor onsen....it is my third visit and will come back one day. What a Gem

Reviewed By xiaoxuan

I have stayed in several ryokan in my previous trip to Japan and this is by far my favourite. It overlooks a river and the place is sparkling clean. Room is big for our party of 5! There are 6 private Onsen / family bath who we enjoyed. There absolutely no need to look for attached bathroom. The outdoor Onsen has a very nice setting. The Onsen street has some nice little shops. There are limited food options so best to book with breakfast and dinner which was of very high quality and served in private room. We enjoyed so much we wanted to stay an extra night but they were fully booked. Kurosawa Onsen area is a little hard to get to without a car though. Pricing in this area is a little steep but worth the price. I highly recommend this ryokan if you are undecided which one to book in this area.

The private onsen as well as the shared onsen are really nice. Maybe the best at all is the food. The dinneris fresh, rich, imaginative and nice arranged. It´s served on the room, while the comprehensive breakfast is served in a common room. The staff is very friendly and helpful, English is no problem.

Atmospheric midrange ryokan nicely located with some rooms on concrete banked creek

Reviewed By bouchee

Vintage wooden building short walk downhill into town from bus station. Not as secluded as soon like its sister hotel up the hill whose pleasant outdoor baths you can use. And should. Budget single room was just that but price was right. Meals served in main room. Quality was adequate but not over the top. Not much going on in the small village that I could detect so next time I think I’d splurge on a ryokan with gardens etc although again for the price this one is just fine. Atmospheric, traditional, not a big concrete building Ike some. Consider making this stop a day trip
