10 Top-Rated Hotels in South Bend, Indiana

July 4, 2022 Marissa Gamble

The 150-year-old University of Notre Dame is South Bend's biggest tourist draw, and for good reason. Though it's not easy to land seats at the 80,000-plus-capacity Notre Dame Stadium for a "Fighting Irish" football game, you'll find plenty of attractions on the beautiful, expansive campus. Highlights include numerous works of art, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart and the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, a replica of the famous shrine. Football fans will also want to visit the College Football Hall of Fame, which features interesting perspectives on the game and inductee videos. Whether or not you remember the Studebaker automobile, which saw its demise in the early sixties, you're sure to enjoy the Studebaker National Museum, featuring more than 75 vehicles drawn from the history of the company, beginning with horse-drawn carriages. South Bend has several fine museums, including the South Bend Regional Museum of Art and the Northern Indiana Center for History, a complex of four museums. Don't leave without trying truffles or fudge from the South Bend Chocolate Company.

Kind of expensive for room size, but we are paying for location. Employees were all very personable and helpful. Parking was inexpensive and close by. Wish the restaurant menu was more extensive. A great view from almost any room.

Stayed for one night on the way through the area. Was greeted warmly by front desk staff. Room was large and clean, although a bit dated. Location is right next to the airport and right down the road from various restaurants. The bed was comfortable, and the black out shades appreciated. Staff at the desk and in the breakfast area the next morning were also friendly and accommodating. This common area was also clean with lots of seating. Plenty of parking and pet friendly. Nice grassy area surrounding the hotel was perfect for walking the dog. I encountered people on ladders working in the building who were also respectful while doing their work.

Fantastic location, with a side of a headache

The room itself was beautiful, the view of the river at night was stunning. But was double charged and unable to talk to a manager for four days as well as my other guest. My guess was also charged $600 for one night and they charge me twice for one night, two different rates. They were unable to resolve this issue without the manager who was out of town for four days. My friend was unable to pay her rent and had to pay a late fee. Was in town for a wedding and this was unnecessary stress. But if you are looking for a beautiful hotel this is one of the best options in South Bend. Just be very clear about the charges upfront.

Four Day Stay to move our son into ND

Check in was smooth and the front desk clerk was friendly. The hotel itself was HORRIBLE. The 2nd floor smelled like cigarettes. We made it to our room which we thought was okay until we walked into the bathroom and there was feces on the toilet seat and blood in the sink. We contacted the front office who then immediately gave us a different room. This room was better at first sight, but then we went to shower - and the shower was plugged! Disgusting! We called down to the front reception that didn't answer the phone, so we just waited until the morning when we were leaving to let them know. They did send someone up and it was fixed by our return. On top of those issues, the a/c leaks in the rooms and the floor is wet which I believe is the cause for the musty/moldy smell. Our keys would not work multiple times. Overall, I would NEVER recommend this hotel and I will NOT be staying here in the future.

Located just off I-80/90, this hotel was convenient and spacious. It includes a restaurant along with both buffet breakfast and menu items. The rooms were very cold, both those for sleeping and meeting. Bring a heavy sweater or shawl. The vegetarian food items were so-so, heavy on beans and lacked other proteins. Their fish was good. Service was excellent, rooms were clean and spacious with fridges, microwaves, and walk in showers. NOTE: There are few restaurants in the area, none you can walk to safely.

An outstanding property

I was in town for a reunion at the University of Notre Dame which is very convenient - just a 5 minute walk away. The staff was welcoming, the room was spacious (a true suite), the breakfast buffet was awesome (a true hot buffet and not just the assortment of packaged/highly processed foods that is typical these days). There was also an evening reception that included wine, cheese and assorted canapes. A++ service at a time when that is (sadly) a rarity. Thank you!

Older property... not perfect but quite acceptable with nice staff.

I was on a solo road trip in March 2022 (driving from Michigan and going down south) and had the opportunity to spend a Tuesday night at this Hampton Inn in South Bend. Overall, my experience was not perfect but decent and acceptable. My check-in process went okay, but I am one of few patrons who chooses to pay for part of my room with cash and part with my credit card. It's not a transaction that the front desk staff see often, so there was a bit of confusion for how to handle my payment... but it ended up working out okay. I received a free upgrade to a suite which I was delighted with! (I hadn't expected that, but perhaps my Diamond status with Hilton Honors is what helped me get that.) I was in Room #316 which was very nice. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, and I slept well. I appreciated the business center (being able to use one of the computers in the lobby to check social media), and breakfast in the morning was decent. Unfortunately, there were a few aspects of the hotel that were less than stellar. There must have been a lot of staff turnover recently, because three staff I spoke with about various questions/issues stated to me that they were new. They were all friendly, but it was just odd to hear three staff talk about new they were to working at the hotel. Also, the pool was closed due to maintenance (kind of a bummer because I'd hoped to use the pool). And finally, I had hoped to be on the road by 7:00 on Wednesday morning, but I wanted to partake of the breakfast... and breakfast wasn't available until 7. (I stay at a lot of Hampton Inns, and usually during the week, breakfast is available at 6 a.m. so I was slightly annoyed that I had to wait until 7.) Also speaking of breakfast, the waffles weren't available for some reason, which I often have when eating breakfast at hotels. It's an older property, and while there were some things about my stay that were disappointing, I was fairly pleased with my stay. The positives of my stay certainly outweighed the negatives, and it was a good stay overall.
