10 Top-Rated Hotels in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, Canary Islands

August 7, 2022 Kelli Reichel

One of Tenerife's top resorts, Puerto de la Cruz is on the north coast of the island. Both Spanish and island traditions are evident in the former fishing village. Its Sardine Festival and annual Carnaval are two highlights of life on the island. Busy, narrow streets of the Old Town, packed with colonial architecture, make walking a safer bet than driving. Popular attractions include Lago Martianez, the casino, Parrot Pool, the Banana Plantation and the Botanical Gardens, which date back to 1788.

Mixed experience

Reviewed By nicksig

Apologies for the length of this review but our stay at this hotel was so mixed that it is hard to summarise in brief. The good points: There is no doubt that this is a lovely hotel. The grounds are beautiful and the spa area is fantastic for adults. The main pool is heated to perfection and lovely to swim in. But it is worth noting that the deep end really is deep and there is not much of a shallow end if you have small children. Our children are older but I would say this is not a hotel really designed for younger families. The rooms are very clean, comfortable and quiet. The staff, on the whole, are polite, helpful and attentive. We hired a car, for example, and that was very straightforward, and we also borrowed pool towels from the front desk. Gary was also excellent at explaining the lives of the jellyfish in the tank in reception to my son. Thanks Gary! The negatives... The big problem for our family of four was the food. We paid a supplement for half-board and were very, very disappointed with what we were offered. The breakfast was fine: standard buffet fare. For the evening meal, however, there were supposed to be three options: Italian, Chinese/Thai, and a buffet. But without being told on arrival, let alone explained why, only the Italian was open. This was a problem because a). eating in the same restaurant every night really became tiresome; b). the standard of the food was not great. The pasta isn't as good as in most half-decent Italian restaurants and one night my wife ordered gnocci only to be told half an hour later that there was a 'problem' with it and she needed to order something else. Sorry, but how hard can it be to prepare and cook a plate of gnocci? c). The choices on the menu are quite limited unless you want to pay a supplement, and there were no specials so every night we had the same choices - potatoes, soup etc for a starter and so on. d). The atmosphere in this restaurant was, well, non-existent. Every night they had the same awful muzak with a woman covering pop songs in the most awful way. Dear God, please change that and at least play some Spanish music or something local from the Canary Islands. In the end, my daughter was close to putting her fingers in her ears... The evening meals got so repetitive that we asked if we could swap it for lunch instead. The hotel said yes, of course. Great. But then the fun really starter. It was chaos. One day we order dishes only for no food to arrive from the kitchen for what seemed like hours. Then they forget my dish entirely, which was another 30 mins. In the meantime a waiter poured us a glass of 'complimentary' wine only for us to then be charged for it. We asked what was happening in the kitchen and apparently there was only one chef on duty as the hotel had trimmed its staff in preparation for a quiet period. This is simply not good enough for a hotel of this quality, Whoever made the decisions to close these restaurants and operate with a skeleton staff should be held to account as it is not acceptable. I would add that there was a big conference or event being held at hotel at the same time, and this seemed to have priority in terms of catering over the needs of regular guests. It is also worth noting that drinks are very expensive. 7 euros for a bottle of water at dinner, which was the same a glass of wine. Come on...this isn't necessary. The problems with food really put a dent in our stay at the hotel and in the end we chose to eat locally at our own cost. One other thing: there is a free shuttle bus in Puerto de la Cruz, but it doesn't operate in afternoon at weekends. This is bonkers as this is one time that you might like to use it. So, in sum, this hotel really is a mixed bag. If it could sort out its issues with catering to regular guests, I would say it would be worth visiting and we would return, but otherwise I would give it a miss.

Perfect hotel in a nice town

A very pleasant hotel, well located in a quiet area. Friendly staff at the reception and no whining about an early arrival time. Got an available room right away. Good rooms and amenities, especially the pools and nudist area, the latter I think is the best on the island. Bar and restaurant at the level you would expect from a 4 star hotel. Staff in both very friendly and accurate. Been here 4 times in the last half year and will definitely be back again in the future.

Not 4 star

My husband and I stayed here for 10days on a half board basis. Initially first impressions were favourable but as the days went by we found more and more faults. Our room had a sea view and tea and coffee making facilities as well as a fridge. The fridge was really old but served its purpose. Our bed was very large and comfortable and clean but the furniture was tired and dirty especially the 2 arm chairs. The food was repetitive and the hot food was barely warm and if you happened to come down to dinner a little late the choice was not good. Breakfast was OK. The towels in the bathroom were thin and not upto the standard of a 4* hotel. The wallpaper is peeling off the wall on floor 4 which surely maintenance staff can see every time they pass. The hotel is in a good position with an impressive lobby but thatsit.. The upside of our stay was the friendly staff who bent over backwards to help you. but we wouldn't stay here again. Overall the hotel is poor for a 4*.

Reception team were great nothing too much hassle. Didn't arrive till about 2am nice bottle of wine on the table. A couple of small waters in the fridge would have been great. Housekeeper was brilliant as was the bar man on the 5th floor. Enjoyable stay

Great apartments and location

Reviewed By A4213XRand

We loved the apartments, well furnished and maintained and the location, it's a short walk to the beach and shops. Although the nearby beach had quite a lot of stones, so we usually went to a better one around 30 minutes walk from the hotel. I can't give it 5* as some days had loud live music up to 11pm which is isn't nice if you need to wake up early to go on day trips. It wasn't some kind of wild drinking and partying, it was actually decent entertainment and quite nice except for being scheduled too late in the evening.

Fantastic hotel

Cannot fault this hotel. All the staff are very friendly and very helpful. Restaurant is brilliant, huge choice of food, beautifully prepared and presented also great theme nights. Longest queue at the bar was around 2 minutes, huge range of soft and alcoholic drinks available including cocktails. Pool area was always immaculate, always sun beds available even when arriving at the pool mid morning or afternoon! Agree with a previous post, it would have been great to be permitted to use floats in the pool. Rooms are huge with a huge balcony. We overlooked the sea for no extra cost! Maid service was daily and room was always immaculate. The hotel has a fantastic location, right on the beachfront and about 1 minute away from all the shops and bars. We have never been to Tenerife before but have already decided to return. Will definitely come back to this hotel 10/10!

Just wrapping up a 5 night stay here and I have to say the staff are some of the best, most charming and most helpful, we’ve ever met. This place deserves more recognition. Spotlessly clean rooms, happy staff and a great place to relax. Food at the buffet is plentiful and minibar and main bar prices are reasonable. Here with my two children (17 & 9). For the older one the shuttle to the shops is great. For the younger one, he loves the pool and the people! There aren’t other children here but to be fair it’s fine and as long as he can swim about or play pool, he’s happy!

We thoroughly enjoyed our 5 night stay here. The apartment was extremely clean and very well equipped with everything we could need. We had a ground floor apartment with a patio which had a great view of Mt Teide on a clear day! We also liked that there was extra outdoor seating and sofas out the front of our apartment (111), as well as a great supply of sun beds around the pool and in the upstairs sunbathing areas. The gardens are very well looked after and the resort itself was very quiet and peaceful. The service from all of the staff was impeccable - they were so friendly and were happy to help with anything! We would definitely come back here purely based on service alone. We didn’t have a car while staying but enjoyed exploring the area by foot. We did numerous walks into the town and the La Paz strip which provides a selection of restaurants closer by. So if you’re happy to walk and explore a car is definitely not an essential. The only things we would have added are oil, salt and pepper and some antibacterial cleaning spray for the times that we cooked ourselves - but these are only very minor things. Thank you for a lovely stay!

On arrival we were met by two Spanish men.. gave our names and room keys were handed to us.. no greeting, no information given about hotel. We were half board but nothing was said to us.. here’s your keys now bye bye.. very disappointing. We had to figure things out for ourselves. Food is not great tbh we ate once for dinner and that was enough. Ate out since some lovely local restaurants. The pool area also very disappointing very small and Spanish ppl keep sun-beds for others not even at the pool.. again visited once in our whole stay. A lot of Spanish in hotel very loud at times. Room says air conditioning but it’s rubbish and noisy we had to leave the balcony doors open which was cooler. On a positive note the hotel had a magnificent view of the area and only a short walk to all local facilities. Unfortunately we would not stop here again. Love Lago Martianez

I stayed at the Hotel Las Aguilas for a week in May 2022 as part of a walking holiday. For driving purposes, the hotel is handily located on the top of a small hill (so geat views), close to the TF-5 motorway, which makes it very easy to head out on trips to the north, south or middle of the island. There is plenty of free parking. It's a bit of a distance from the beaches in Puerto de la Cruz (about a mile and a half), but it's walkable in about half an hour or so. It's quite downhill on the way to the beach and therefore quite uphill on the way back, but the hotel does have a complimentary shuttle bus (although I never actually used it myself). The hotel is nicely presented and my room was spacious and comfortable, with a big balcony and a great view (photos attached). There are two lovely swimming pools, both of which were pretty quite the whole time I was there. I was on an all inclusive package, so I ate in the hotel's buffet restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There was a good selection of good food all the time and the restaurant never got particularly busy. If you weren't on an all inclusive package then there didn't appear to be many alternative places to eat nearby, although there were a couple of large supermarkets, easily walkable, but along the side of a footpath-less road). The staff were all very friendly and helpful and overall I had a really good time and would not hesitate to stay there again.
