A true traditional Bulgarian family run hotel

Reviewed By Kuzeyboy

We had two nights in the apartment at the hotel. It was great! Quirky layout and very traditional look. Very little English was spoken but that wasn't a problem at all! Very warm and welcoming in a great quiet location just a vey short walk from the main attractions. We ate in the restaurant where the son spoken excellent English. Great value for money and a very relaxing stay. If you want a standardised hotel chain package this isn't the place for you but if you want to experience a little more of Bulgarian hospitality - don't hesitate!

Comfortable but expensive and some unacceptable weaknesses

We stayed here for one night over the Christmas 2021 holiday. There are some good points and some bad points. First of all though, I should point out that the price was right at the top end of what I would expect to pay in Bulgaria for such a room. The good points: The room we took was described as a suite, and this is fair enough, given that there is a separate living areas, bedroom and bathroom. However there was also a bunk bed (unused in our case) in the living room, which cuts down the available space by a certain amount. The living area isn't huge but the booking site did make the floor space (in square metres) clear. It is very comfortably furnished in an individual style that we found very pleasant. It was also very warm despite the weather outside being on the cold side: there was a fairly heavy snowfall overnight. The bed was very comfortable and extra pillows and blankets were available in the wardrobe, not that we needed them. The bathroom was also very good except that the shower is over the bathtub and there is no shower curtain! This had the predictable effect of ensuring that water gets spread over a much larger area than you would like. The bare wooden frame of the bathroom mirror was clearly already suffering from repeated soaking by the shower. Breakfast was fantastic. It was a lovely surprise to come downstairs in the morning to find a table reserved specifically for our room. It's almost certain that there will be something you like for breakfast and everything seemed of high quality. The restaurant area was also decorated for Christmas in a very charming way. I just wish I'd had a bit more appetite. The whole hotel is decorated with artworks apparently by one of the owners. It seems there are demonstrations, exhibitions and workshops run by the hotel on art-based themes as well. Information about these is easily accessible. You can by bowls, cups, plates and so on also made by the same person, and they are very nice but also rather expensive. The not-so-good points: There is no safe in the room. When we arrived we found reception unstaffed, and there was a notice - IN BULGARIAN - saying "look for us in the restaurant." Well at that point, we didn't know where the restaurant was of course (there are no signs), and if I'd been unable to understand Bulgarian, I would have been completely lost at that point. After a long journey, the last thing you need is to have to go searching through a hotel to find a member of staff. When we did find someone, she seemed blissfully unconcerned at what had just happened. This is not really acceptable in a hotel that markets itself as it does. The room was on the first floor and there is no lift, so you have to lug your suitcases upstairs. No help was offered at all. When we asked if there was a lift, the member of staff just said "Oh it's only on the first floor," once again appearing to be unconcerned for the impression she was making, i.e. not a good one. Fortunately we are sufficiently able-bodied to haul our own luggage. Once again, for the price they charge, I would have expected better; this again is not acceptable. Despite that fact that the booking site talked about soundproofing, there is clearly a lack of it throughout the accommodation areas. You can hear everything in the corridor and downstairs, and most of all in the next-door room. If your neighbours switch on the television, you WILL hear it. If they cough or snore, you're going to hear that as well. Fortunately the bedroom has a separate door so that does cut down on some of the noise. At about 2:30 in the morning I could hear music coming from somewhere. It turns out that someone had left music playing in the restaurant all night. Again this apparent lack of concern for guests' comfort isn't acceptable. Would we go back? Maybe, but we wouldn't pay the same price and we would try to get a room on a higher floor. There are other choices around Troyan.

Because we went in February we could not use the outdoor pool, but that is why we want to visit again in the summer. We had an overall great experience at Family Hotel Strannopriemnitza.

Nice stay

Me and my husband stayed at this lovely place for 4 days. It is nicely located in the heart of the forest and the only sounds you can hear are the birds songs and the river passing nearby. We had really peaceful and close to the nature stay. The hosts are great, so polite and nice, they cooked for us every day so delicious meals with herbs from the forest and homemade products. We highly recommend the place and we would definitely stay there again. It was a real pleasure for us!

Good hotel, underrated!

Reviewed By Marlies R

Nice and modern hotel with 10 min walk from Krushuna waterfalls. Rooms were really pretty and hygienic. Airconditioning was also present. The young lady from the reception was really friendly and good in English. We stayed for dinner in the evening and they offer a broad menu with pizza, pasta, bbq, ... so choice enough. One small thing: We only had to wait for a long time (45 min after we finished eating) for the lady to come picking up our used plates so we could ask for dessert, which we found a bit strange as we were the only ones left in the restaurant (also the case at breakfast: we were the only ones there), but ok not a big deal! We just found it pitty that there were so few other guests as the hotel is so pretty and you don't find such a nice hotel in this area, that the hotel is not more booked! There's of course not much to do in the area, so 1 or 2 nights should do at this hotel to visit everything in the area (waterfalls/caves), but I'd definitely would recommend this hotel to visit these tourist attractions!

Villa Cherven

Villa Cherven - amazing view, lovely horses, wonderful place

Reviewed By Josh N

We braved the 2km off road path in order to make it up to the house (in a normal car - just fine if you take it slow) and we’re so glad we did. Milena and her father were incredibly welcoming, and the view from the house is unbelievably beautiful. We then went on a pony trek (on horses - but a smaller breed than we normally see in the UK) through the wonderful terrain. Milena speaks excellent English and was helpful, patient, interesting and understanding of our children’s fears. We got back in time to have a drink and admire the view from the house’s terrace, but we’re unfortunately not able to stay for a fresh trout dinner. Looking at what our fellow guests were eating, we were sorry to miss out. Next time!
