Totally mis sold holiday. Worst hotel we have stayed in!!

We arrived at the hotel Tamala Hotel on 27th March 2022 and should have stayed there until 10 April 2022. However due to the issues we have detailed below we booked our flights to come home early at our own cost on 30th March 2022. The Tamala Hotel was misleadingly described by TUI to be 4 star all Inclusive hotel however we experienced the following problems, the food was very poor quality and repetitive, the rooms and toilet were dirty, there was mould around the shower, rust on the tiles on the bathroom floor, the balcony did not meet health and safety standards, no smoke alarm, bare wires exposed on the balcony, air conditioning unit was leaking dirty water on to the floor, seating area on the balcony was dirty with ripped cushions, towels were not changed daily, at times there was no running water to wash or shower, given one bottle of water to last two weeks, no toilet paper, the door to our room has been damaged so was difficult to lock, a light fitting was not securely fastened to the ceiling. Also when ordering drinks at the bar dirty glasses were washed in cold water and dried with a serviette then fresh drinks poured into glasses for other guests to use. This is not hygienic in the current climate with the risk of Covid infection high at present. The information in respect of food and drink stated “at lunch and dinner you can pick from an international a la carte menu”. The holiday was booked as all inclusive and no where does it mention you have to pay for the a la carte menu. The information also “stated a snack bar is on hand for lighter bites to eat throughout the day” This was not available and not all drinks were included in the all inclusive package for example diet coke and Hoergaarden beer. We complained to the TUI representative Pete on our first day of arrival who said your 4 star rating was Gambian standards which is wrong as TUI standards should be the same for every hotel they offer. Pete said he would note our concerns and request to see if we could change hotel to The African Princess as it was the same 4 star rating however he failed to mention it was not all inclusive so we would have had further costs in respect of food and drink. We viewed the hotel and on face value it looked far better and cleaner than Tamala and possibly deserved a 4 Star rating. Pete said the African Princess hotel was soulless.

Fantastic winter break, much needed. Staff were wonderful, attentive and knowledgeable. Food was plentiful , tasty and well presented Drinks , ok so some spirit weren't available or 'ran out' but so what, have something else, your not paying for it at the bar Rooms, a little dated but had everything you needed, comfortable beds, enough drawer and wardrobe space and a great hot shower Beach traders, polite and left you alone or just wanted to talk . After all they've suffered because of the pandemic as much as any one. Would we return , in a heart beat.

Great holiday, lovely staff, but be prepared for slightly rough rooms!

Reviewed By KateM5042

We spent two weeks here in February on a half board basis and, overall, it was a really good break. Breakfasts and dinners were great (aside from the chicken caesar salad which - bizarrely - was dressed with granulated sugar instead of parmesan), and we ordered dinner off the menu each night as the buffet restaurant wasn't operational in the evenings. Almost all the staff were lovely and really attentive, great pool, and stunning beach, but the rooms not so great... We had upgraded to a superior room and, on the positive, ours was large, with a nice balcony looking towards the sea (albeit a slightly dodgy looking railing) and comfy bed, but the decor was really rough - not a great first impression. Decor aside, one thing we would have liked were bedside lamps rather than overhead spotlights so that one of us could read without disturbing the other. Great birding just up the road from the hotel at Kotu Creek (ask for Dawda - ace bird guide (and general tour guide).

Fabulous place, excellent service

Reviewed By JaKYorks

Just back from an amazing four weeks at Kunta Kinteh. The weather was absolutely fabulous while we were there, hitting temps of 38 degrees some days. A huge thank you to Solomon, Jo (Sarjo) and all the staff for making it an absolutely perfect holiday, we enjoyed every single minute of our stay and can’t wait for our next visit. It was our first stay at KK, we have stayed at lots of other places at Gambia (this was our 24th visit to Gambia, we really love the place) and this is certainly a fabulous place to stay and a lovely peaceful location. We were allocated a different bungalow to the one we had originally booked as with Thomas Cook going bust KK must have had an absolute nightmare re-juggling all the bookings due to flight changes etc, Jo assured us that we would like the bungalow he had given us, and we certainly did and we were lucky to not have to change bungalows like some people did. The two bedroomed bungalows are really lovely. The extra bedroom gives you lots more space. The beds are huge and the linen was changed regularly, even the bedspread. Fresh good quality towels daily and we were even provided with washing up liquid and tea towels. We didn’t have a toaster but asked Jo for one and he got us one. These bungalows are really popular so they book up well in advance. They are right on the beach front so just perfect. The restaurant food was amazing, OK you may have to wait a while if the restaurant is busy, but it was lovely to relax and admire the lovely sea view from the restaurant. Room service is free so several nights we ordered our food in advance and sat on the lovely patio area of our bungalow. The ‘proper’ chips and omelettes are amazing. The chefs made us some beautiful dishes, they even make their own bread in the kitchen. We had a few full English breakfasts in the restaurant and they were very reasonable and excellent quality. You only have to look at how busy the restaurant is both during the day and at night to see how popular the restaurant is. There was entertainment every night and we had some really good nights there. They have the huge advantage of having a big dance floor, unlike some of the tiny bars in the area, so there is plenty of room for people to dance. They even have an Elvis singer on a Monday evening. The band 5 Star are brilliant and had everyone up dancing. The entertainment stops 10 pm or just after, so this means the complex is lovely and quiet on an evening and we had no problems at all with noise on an evening, some places we have stayed have had music blasting away nearby until the early hours. We found the drinks in the restaurant to be very reasonable compared with other restaurants. We had a few Paradise cocktails, and wow they were strong and very nice indeed. The beach is lovely and the sunbed mattresses very comfy. The beach guys will sort you out with sunbeds and move them to where you want them. Bongo has worked there many years and looked after us very well. All the beach guys do a really good job. KK is in the process of building a big swimming pool and sadly we just missed the opening of it. It will be opening very soon. It was amazing to watch it being built and all the staff involved absolutely worked their socks off and were all extremely pleasant. We did worry that there would be a lot of noise and disruption due to this work, but not at all. We certainly look forward to using the pool in the future, our only worry is that the pool may be too popular with non-residents and spoil the beautiful tranquillity of the place, but hopefully not. Credit to Soloman and Jo, the staff at KK are just the nicest, friendliest staff we have ever met. It was a joy to see the maids doing their rounds singing and laughing.KK certainly gives the impression of one big happy family. If you visit watch for Mark in the green overalls with a huge tall woolly hat watering the garden, a really lovely funny guy. Can’t possibly mention all the staff but huge thanks to Idrisa the Chef, Bongo, Mark, Moses and the double trouble waitresses Sari and Adama for their excellent service and wicked sense of humour (apologies if any names spelt wrong). KK is at the end of a long dusty road but we never had a problem getting a taxi. We have regular drivers we have used for years so we just called them. If you use the taxi rank outside KK then barter with them as their first price will be a ridiculous one. If you have any space left in your luggage then please, please use it to take out gifts to the Gambians. We took out some Bob Marley tshirts and they were so appreciated. We sadly had much less luggage with Enter Air (which was annoying as usually we get extra luggage) as usually we take out footballs (we deflate them before we pack them), football pumps, bike accessories, torches, mosi repellents, stationery, plasters, bandages, dressings, socks, hats, bra’s, baby/children’s clothes, shoes. Please don’t waste your luggage allowance Gambia is such a poor country and any gifts are so greatly appreciated by the people. We are huge dog lovers so we took out some dog leads and collars, flea treatments and tick removers. There are some lovely dogs on the beach and they are really friendly so don’t panic if one comes and nestles under your sunbed for shade. Gambia is a truly amazing place to visit with the friendliest of people. So lovely to see that Tui are doing flights from November 2020 and are using the Dreamliner plane. This will be so good for Gambia. Can’t wait for our next visit so missing the glorious Gambian sunshine.
