Whirlpool room

Reviewed By I2273RBmarilynm

We stayed for 2 nights in a whirlpool room. There was a king bed, night stands on either side of the bed, 2 chairs. There was a microwave, refrigerator, and 2 small drawers in the stand that the tv was on. A desk area and an area with coffee maker made up the rest of the room. The whirlpool was in the bathroom along with a glassed shower, & 2 sinks. The toilet was in a separate very small room. The room seemed to be clean. We did find 2 spiders on the floor by the toilet. The ceiling over the bed what appeared to be water damage. The hotel has an indoor pool area with pool and ping pong tables and jacuzzi. The rooms are around the pool area and are not well insulated. We could hear noise from the pool area until around 11pm. There is a breakfast buffet included. Just the typical one with eggs, sausage, pancakes, & cereal. There is no coffee except at breakfast. Check in and out where quick. Hotel staff was friendly. Overall, the stay was okay. We would probably stay elsewhere in the future.

Overall nice place

Reviewed By PamelaBrookfield

The Hotel Julien is a very nice place. Beautiful lobby, fun bar, clean rooms and extremely friendly staff. The rooms are very small and I did not like the location of the bathroom. It is located in the middle of the room. So when my spouse would get up to use it, it woke me up. I was also surprised that they still do not have daily room cleaning.

Great overall experience! Wonderful staff, comfortable room, clean property, and good breakfasts

Reviewed By whyaske

Our stay was wonderful! The staff were outstanding and very responsive. We always got a “see you later, enjoy” and “welcome back” which is something you don’t often hear at a front desk. The breakfast was good, with two waffle makers, one making 4 small waffles, great for families. They had eggs, sausage and potatoes as the hot items and were better than those we’ve had elsewhere. There is a good selection of breakfast items such as bagels, muffins, cereal and oatmeal. Our room was very comfortable, with a large shower. During this age of COVID, there is not daily housekeeping, but you can ask for it and also ask for other things, such as extra towels, coffee, etc. The property itself is very clean and well maintained. We will definitely stay here again. We would like to give special commendation to Carolyn and Tootie (best front desk dog ever!) She was the best, always asking if there was anything we needed and just bringing a great personality to the front desk. She is such a people person who really cares that you have a great stay.

A step in Time

We had a really great three night stay there recently. The house is absolutely beautiful. I literally felt like I had stepped back in time. Simon and his wife are great hosts. Very friendly and personable. He did a great job filling us in on the history of this house. The breakfasts were amazing!! We met some really nice people on our short stay. We stayed in Anna’s room only because it was the only room available when I booked. The room itself is very comfortable. The only drawback was the shower or maybe I should say lack of. However, we were fully aware of this when we booked so it was no surprise. They had some really nice books available for reading in the parlor and a mini kitchen for guests to use. It came in handy for warming up our leftovers. It was hard to leave such a beautiful and comfortable home.

Dated business hotel with few services

Reviewed By nmhoosier

We had a mixed experience here. Arrival was straightforward, and parking is easy and free, unusual for a downtown hotel. The entire facility is a bit dated and dingy in spots, but our room was clean and very quiet. The hotel is convenient to several nice tourist spots, including the Mississippi River Museum and downtown restaurants. We did use the pool, which was reasonably clean, although the air temperature was perhaps 90F. Service was mixed; staff was usually (but not always) pleasant, lobby coffee was always empty, but there was a restaurant adjacent to the front desk. We instead ate at the small cafe just down the hill. We asked to stay another night, but I was told they were going to paint our room and we had to leave. I found this a bit odd as the room was quite good and did not appear to need paint. With a few updates, we might stay here again.

Good for what we needed!

Reviewed By kca0210

I would have given this place 5 stars … my only complaint, which may sound silly to some but important to me, is that there weren’t enough electric outlets! There were 2 usable … one in the bathroom and one tucked back next to the microwave. We needed many more to charge our phones, watches and iPad. The water park was plenty for our 2 year old who just wanted to wade around the kiddie pool and go down the slide. The breakfast was FANTASTIC!! Everything tasted great and the staff servicing were all great as well, very friendly!! Whoever made those donut holes should get a raise … those were the best I’ve ever had! The rooms were outdated but clean and spacious. I’m a little amazed they only have 2 elevators for that large of a place but it all worked out fine. The arcade was fun but you don’t win any tickets for prizes which we didn’t care about but I’m sure some kids wouldn’t love that. We ate lunch at Tony Roma’s out on the patio which had a beautiful view and food was good. We would definitely come back!

Top three worst hotels I’ve stayed at - Avoid !!

Reviewed By Patrick D

This hotel was not worth the money and there were a ton of problems. The facility was completely rundown with a dark pothole filled parking lot. Pool (cold & chipped paint everywhere) and breakfast (lacking) both closed earlier then posted. Very old carpet and pillows and nowhere near worth the money. The 1970s ice machine and new vending machine still worked though. Breakfast ended at 9 AM (actually 8:55). Told Internet not working because of “yesterday‘s storm”. Room was old but decent but again not for the money paid.

Beautiful, Restful, Bed and Breakfast

Reviewed By nathans892

This is a wonderful Victorian Style bed and breakfast that is reasonably priced, close to the downtown area and all the major sites of historical Debuque Iowa. The Hosts are very knowledgeable and it is evident that they love don't just manage the property. They are still in the process of restoration but they definitely care about doing it right and keeping the house true to the period. The breakfast was tasty and very well presented (more than enough to fill you up). Our room had stained glass, beautiful woodwork, a fireplace and a private bath. It was laid back and very restful. My wife and I will definitely stop by again when traveling through.
