10 Top-Rated Hotels in Bayeux, Calvados, Basse-Normandie, Normandy

August 7, 2022 Carley Gatson

The northern French town of Bayeux is best known for the eponymous tapestry that depicts the 11th-century Norman Conquest. You can see it, of course, on display at the Bayeux Tapestry Museum. The cloth’s original home was the Bayeux Cathedral, which still towers over the area, looking a bit like a Gothic wedding cake. Inside you’ll find beautifully detailed murals and haunting crypts. Bayeux makes an excellent jumping off point to tour nearby historic WWII sites.

Hotel Reine Mathilde

Very nice hotel in the heart of Bayeux

Reviewed By Familyman94

We recently stayed in Bayeux to take the Band of Brothers tour. After looking over different hotels in Bayeux we decided on the Hotel Reine Mathilde and am so glad we did. The hotel had a great deal of charm with a great location. We were across the street from the Cathedral and about 50 meters from our meeting point for the tour. The hotel was about a 10 - 15 minute easy walk from the train station. Our room was large to accommodate my wife, son and daughter. There was more than enough room with no one stepping over anyone. The beds were comfortable as well as the pillows. We did not have the breakfast so we cannot comment to it. We, did though eat at their restaurant for dinner and the meal and service were very good. There are other places to eat which we experienced and did not have a bad experience anywhere. We found Bayeux to be very friendly. If we make it back to Bayeux we will stay again.

Charming classic manor house

We used Domaine de Bayeux as our base for touring D-Day areas over the course of six days. It is situated just a few blocks from the Tapestry Museum, the Cathedral and many excellent restaurants in a quiet part of town. Domaine, like most of the homes in Bayeux, are situated behind austere walls that open into gravel courtyards. The entrance has a feeling of a private house rather than a hotel. The staff are friendly and helpful. Our room, on the second floor, was spacious (the width of the building) with large windows facing the street and a lovely courtyard lawn with trees and flowers along the periphery. The room had a simple elegance with comfortable chairs for reading. The bathroom was enormous with white marble floors, a large walk-in shower (with strong pressure), a large bathtub and two large sinks and towel warmers. The owner was charming and a lifesaver in finding us an antigen testing invaluable in helping us to find COVID testing ---We spent most of our time touring the region and wished we had planned more free time to sit in the garden, reading and listening to the songbirds who woke us every morning.

The hotel was clean, comfortable and quiet - and the room was simple but charming. We were also gratified that it was an easy walk from the train station and to everything in town. But the staff is what made the trip. Everyone was so helpful and accommodating.

Hotel Villa Lara & Villa Augustine

The Villa Lara is a small privately-owned luxury boutique hotel with a chic but casual atmosphere in the historic center of Bayeux. Next to it, the Villa Augustine is set in the peaceful grounds and part of the Villa Lara and has 4 presidential suites of 220 square meters with a newly constructed interior within its original charming 19th century exterior. Both villas are adjacent and nestled in the historic center of Bayeux, in a very quiet square facing the 11th century majestic cathedral and along the Aure River. The famous Bayeux Tapestry is only 2 minutes away, the pickup point for all D-Day excursions are literally outside our door. Our 32 rooms are appointed in an elegant French style. All the rooms are accessible by lift and equipped with air conditioning, a minibar, large flat-screen TV and safe. The marbled bathrooms have a walk-in shower and a separate bathtub in most of the rooms. The 28 rooms of the Villa Lara range from 30 to 50 square meters while our presidential suites are 220 square meters, all with a view on the Bayeux Cathedral. Beds are minimum 1.80 x 2 meters and in most of the rooms can be up to 2 x 2 meters. Wireless high-speed internet access is free throughout the hotel, which features a cozy bar/lounge area with a fireplace and a library, a marbled lobby, and a breakfast room set in a traditional French style where the breakfast is prepared and served in front of the guest, from 7am till 10:30am. Our complimentary fitness center is available 24/7 and equipment includes a treadmill, bicycle, weights and strength training machines. A private carpark is available with 15 spots based on a first come first served basis, and a drop-off space for buses. Although we meet the official government criteria of a 5-star property, we do not have a restaurant, spa, nor a formal bellman at the front door. We do not want to mislead our future guests who attribute these specific amenities to their image of a 5-star property, although we do of course provide porterage and turn down. And, as always, our commitment to 5-star service is at the forefront of our day-to-day operations.

First Class front desk

The staff here is amazing! Everyone is pleasant and willing to help the customers - now that's customer service. We thanked them numerous times - they were either at the front desk, helping to seat patrons in the restaurant or getting drinks at the bar. The hotel is centrally located in Bayeux. Our room was quite spacious with storage and a desk. Fresh clean towels were provided daily, and the bed was comfortable. We loved the history of this hotel - do make time to go into the bar and look at the photographs. Yes, the drinks were a bit pricey. It is walking distance to the Tapestry, the Cathedral and the Museum. There are numerous restaurant options within walking distance. The restaurant is quite nice, we had dinner one evening. We did not have breakfast. Parking is quite tight and very limited. We reserved a parking spot so not sure where parking is if you do not reserve. Overall, we highly recommend this hotel for cleanliness, location and the front desk staff.

Budget hotel - reasonable for the price.

Reviewed By df86

Visited the Premiere Class Bayeux whilst on a trip to the area. The hotel is competitively priced. It's also quite basic. There were two people in our room, although the room has beds for three. If it were to be occupied by three people then it would be really cramped - it was congested enough with two people. The room was in decent condition: cleaned daily. However the bathroom is very small. Not much space at all. But the shower was hot and powerful enough so the basics are covered! The beds were comfortable enough for a good night's sleep. A breakfast is provided. I didn't try it, but others reported it as being basic. Overall - basic but certainly workable for a stay if you are looking to stick to a budget.

Specifically a restaurant review...

We stayed in the connected hotel next door but decided to eat in this hotel. The restaurant looked like it had been recently redecorated and the surrounding were comfortable. The food was excellent and the waiter was first rate. He was knowledgeable, friendly and spoke English. All in all, a very good experience. Although technically we stayed next door, the two hotels share some facilities. The reception staff were very helpful; the secure parking is very easy (although limited by space) and the pool looked clean and well tended. We would definitely rebook this hotel and recommend it.
