10 Top-Rated Hostels hotel in Barcelona, Catalonia

April 26, 2023 Myesha Cogley

Nestled between the Mediterranean coast and the colossal Montserrat, Barcelona's deep historical roots stretch through the ruins dotting the city and the local culture and Catalan language. You'll feel you're traveling through time, whether you're watching popular events such as the colles castelleres (human pyramids) and sardanes dances, or walking narrow, maze-like streets and broader boulevards. Stroll from the Gothic Quarter through Passeig de Gracia, where Roman ruins, Gothic cathedrals, and remnants of the Spanish Golden Age and the Civil War stand side by side with surreal and modernist structures by Gaudí and Domènech i Montaner. Stop at any of the numerous restaurant terraces and enjoy traditional calçots and botifarra sausages, flavor-packed tapas, and fresh seafood. At day's end, treat yourself to a refreshing cocktail in one of the many Chirringuitos (beach bars) along the golden beaches embracing the sea.

How to ruin your Barcelona trip: Stay at the Generator Hostel

Reviewed By carolinehull2525

My experience at the Generator Barcelona was truly awful. Hostels are supposed to be easy, efficient and cheap places to stay. However, the Generator is none of those things. My trouble began when checking in. They claimed to not have me booked for 3 nights, despite my email which confirms I had a reservation. They proceeded to charge me 450€ (because I was not in the system) even though I confirmed I would pay 350€. That is completely unacceptable. They scrambled to find me a bed and put me in the most repulsive room with obnoxious roommates — one man came back drunk at 5am, vomiting and crying. My roomcard rarely worked and needed to be replaced several times. The pictures the Generator posts online are extremely deceiving, as the rooms are tiny, VERY hot, there are no lockers nor curtains. Staff members were very rude and not helpful at all. They took no accountability for their mistakes and made it seem like I caused the issues. Don’t they work in the hospitality industry? My stay at the Generator was anything but hospitable. Every other guest I spoke to also had poor experiences. Not to mention, after paying a ridiculous amount of money for a hostel (which should be cheap) I saw random people sleeping on lobby couches FOR FREE. So while I paid a ton of money for a tiny and uncomfortable bed, some people slept for free on the couch. Because my room was so awful, I found it easier to spend time in the lobby with my friends. However, when we tried having a conversation at a table, the front desk man rudely told us to shut up meanwhile there were loud and drunk people stumbling through the lobby at 3am. So you’re telling me, we cannot have a calm conversation with my friends, yet it’s okay to be loud and overly intoxicated? I will never recommend this hostel to anyone. Even if it’s your cheapest option - don’t go.

Clean and comfortable

Reviewed By Foxtrot90

Stayed here last week with 3 mates in a private room. Got to the hotel early and were offered a bag drop which was great. Room was fine, everything clean and tidy and good value for money. Location was pretty good as near a lot of sites and landmarks, note it is a good walk to the beach. Were told on the second day from a guy on reception when stopping us whilst on way to our room that we had to wear the room band when entering the hostel (not had to do that in any other hostel or even on the first day?) but fine no problem. Overall, good value for money.

Do not believe the pictures with the filters, the rooms are in awkward condition and really really not worth the money. The staff behaves inappropriately, and the price really does not reflect what you get. It is better to stay away, pay a little more and get a reward ratio that is worth it.

They mean it when they write free cancellation

Reviewed By sukricgoloS

I never got to be at their place - because within 2 hours the day before I arrived, they cancelled my booking. So unfortunately there was a problem with me creditcard, that I was not aware of. The day before they wrote me and email about the problem. This is here it starts. The gave me a response time within 2 hours. At that time I was out of the country, on another vacation. Which of course means you dont see your emails within two hours. So when I arrived hame and was able to check. I already had a cancelled room. Now - I tried to called the reception. Clearly I thought this was just a mistake we had to sort out. No. Now the whole hostel was fully booked and they didn´t want to help me in any way. This was the same day I had to land and stay. So basically they gave me under 24 hours the day before arrival. If you want security and service. Don´t choose this hostel. I have had great experiences in other hostels in Barcelona. I can recomment Zero Barcelona. With high service and nice rooms.

The best location

Reviewed By Sarahjane282

Having booked pre Covid at a different safestay hosel in Barcelona we were finally able to travel 2 years later. We were unable to get a refund even though the travel restrictions were in place but they did let us move our booking to another date. The location of this hostel very good with metro access straight outside and plenty of shops and restaurants. The breakfast was from €2.50 up to €5.50 which was extra on top of our rooms rate. We stayed in a 6 person female dorm with an en-suite. The room was basic but clean and was the perfect base for a city break as you don’t spend much time in the room. Remember to bring a padlock for the locker. There is a roof terrace but no seating or bar available which is a shame. The only negatives are the staff on reception weren’t very friendly and you have to pay €2 to store luggage once you have checked out. This service is free on your arrival day but for some reason not once you have checked out.

Such a nice hostel!

Rodamón might be the cleanest hostel I’ve ever stayed in. Every time I turned around someone was emptying a garbage or wiping a counter. The location is excellent, minutes aware from the metro, bike rentals everywhere, cafes and restaurants all over, super desirable location. They have this huge terrace and my friend and I happened to be in a room that opened right up onto it. I think we were room 7 beds 7 and 8. So we essentially just left those doors open all the time, it was gorgeous. With the terrace being as great as it is it would be nice if they threw more activities in the evening. There was yoga one morning which was nice but it would be great if they hosted evening stuff. The kitchen was also a bit small… but honestly not enough to take stars away. It had a dishwasher too which was a huge bonus. Super happy with this stay!

Worst experience ever

Reviewed By -mms-2021-tripadviso

I went with a group of friends. We arrived very late because of our flight and all we wanted was going to sleep as soon as possible. The check in lasted for more than an hour, the receptionist didn’t know nothing. Then she guided us to our room (a shared one) and turned the lights on and woke up the rest of the guests. There was a lot of strange people that made us feel very uncomfortable. The bathrooms were dirty and there was no hot water and no one told us. When we told the receptionist she said “Cold water is good for blood circulation”, laughing at the situation in stead of fix it or say sorry. I bought a sandwich for breakfast and the next day someone ate half of it and left the sandwich with bites in the fridge. Anytime we wanted to hang out in the common rooms (supposedly to be open till midnight), the receptionist turned off the lights. The beds were small and very uncomfortable, with no private space. A guest also got bitten by bedbugs!!! Please never go to this hostel is the worst experience I had in almost two months of traveling around Europe. The worst thing, the receptionist was drunk or high I don’t know, all the nights and she really bothered us. Very unprofessional, really a shame
