10 Top-Rated Bed and Breakfast Inns in Virginia

April 19, 2023 Florencio Paulino

Virginia can make American history come alive. Visit Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, tour Civil War battlefields, explore the living history museum at Williamsburg… the possibilities are endless (if the kids object, break up the historical sightseeing with a visit to Busch Gardens). Arlington, site of Arlington National Cemetery, is just across the Potomac River from all the major sites in D.C. In addition to beaches and historical attractions, Virginia has plenty to offer outdoor enthusiasts. Active families will love the Blue Ridge Highlands, where hiking, canoeing and tubing are just a few of the activities offered. Couples might enjoy a romantic mountain cabin in Virginia after a day of hiking in Shenandoah National Park.

Shirleys Bed and Breakfast is just wonderful. We enjoyed our second trip there this past week. Cheryl and Jeff are the best hosts. Their friendly, easygoing demeanor makes for a thoroughly enjoyable stay. They are so great about recommendations for restaurants and sites to see. The inn is quiet, clean, and beautifully decorated. We already made our reservation for next year.

Cute hotel and location

Reviewed By turgonuk

Stayed one night here in March 22. The restaurant part was not open at this time, so it was room only. Room was fairly small, but comfortable enough, not much of a view outside (some sort of yard at the back). We had everything we needed. Location was right in the center of this small town and we could park right outside. Small general store was a few meters away which also provided breakfasts if you wanted. A small breakfast was provided at the hotel in the morning along with hot coffees etc.

Fantastic Hotel Hidden in Tiny Town

Reviewed By CalifornianFromSouth

Lexington, VA is a tiny, sleep town, so you don’t expect a world-class hotel to be there. But The Georges would be nice he place I would choose even if it were in London or Paris. This hotel is the epitome of hospitality. Everyone goes above and beyond to ensure that the guests are comfortable, the rooms are all unique; and all adorable. The included breakfast is worth the cost of a night’s stay just by itself. I visit Lexington regularly to see family there, and I schedule my trips to match availability at The Georges. I don’t stay anywhere else in Lexington.

My husband, another couple, and I visited Williamsburg at the end of the Memorial Day weekend and what a gem we found in the Cedars. Leroy welcomed us when we arrived and graciously showed us our rooms and explained the arrangements. It was great to have a little fridge where we could store a few items we had in our cooler bag and to have newspapers and comfortable lounging spots both inside and out. Both rooms were exactly as advertised. We had rooms on the main floor of the house. They both felt spacious with their high ceilings. I give the owners credit for creating comfortable bathrooms despite space restrictions. I loved having a chair in my room and endulged myself with a little introvert time after our first day before we headed out to dinner. The next morning we had the opportunity to meet Alex who was such a delight--it's truly hard to share adequately. He took the opportunity to get to know us and then shared personal experiences which were both interesting and really humorous. Definitely can imagine standup in his future. We would all highly recommend the Cedars and would revisit again if the opportunity provided.

Great long weekend escape with the kids at Peon Palace!!!

Reviewed By Kellipayne80

We stayed 3 nights/4days at Peon Palace (literally seconds away from Graves Mountain (main) Lodge. We walked pretty much everywhere we went: lodge area, farm across the road, fishing ponds and quaint little country store that had all the staples, sandwiches, amazing milkshakes, plus more! The kids spent a lot of time playing in the yard and along the river that runs in the backyard. Adults spent a lot of time rocking on the front porch enjoying cold beverages and music (we brought our Alexa). The house had 3 nice sized bedrooms (2 doubles, 1 double/2 twins and another 1 double/2 twins). 2 recently remodeling bathrooms (1 with shower/tub combo and the other with just a shower). The kitchen was also recently remodeled and had all the appliances, pots/pans and dishes you need (with the exception of plastic contains/ziploc bags to store leftovers). The house was provided with all the toiletries, linens, trash bags and dishwasher and sink soaps. The living room was cozy with a full sized couch and 2 comfy arm chairs and a nice flat screen TV with Direct TV cable. There was also Wi-Fi and cell service thru Wi-Fi and streaming Alexa worked great. My husband is 6’7” and 350lbs…..so I was a bit worried about the beds. To our surprise they slept great! The only complaint all weekend he had was the shower heads were too low for him, which we find is typical when we go places (but these were abnormally low, but still it was ok for me 5’3”) and the water pressure was very strong. The pictures online are a bit outdated and this place as mentioned must have been recently updated and freshly painted, which was a pleasant surprise. Take a peek at the pictures I took below. Unfortunately I did not get any pictures of the outside of the house, but that too was recently painted (a light bluish/grey) and very appealing. The house is quite close to the road (perhaps 20-30 years) so if you have really little kids will definitely need to keep a close eye on them. The speed limit is 45mph and most do drive that speed ? but they are respectful to the horses, golf carts and people walking on this country road. It was a GREAT weekend and we will definitely be back.
