Small aquarium but plenty to see. Several different types of salmon. There are doctor fish where you can put your hands in - very fun.

We stayed at Lake Saroma to break up the long drive between Asahikawa and Shiretoko. This is a beautiful nature park with lots of wild flowers during summer .
We went on the horse carriage ride and the guide even let us try holding the reins for a fab photo op. There are bicycles for rent which would have been the best way to explore the park but we didn't have time for it .

The Kitami Mint Museum was interesting to see as we were in the area. As we do not speak Japanese, it would not have been as interesting a visit if we did not have the person there provide a history to our group before we walked through it.
It's quaint and a quick walk through the museum. The gift shop has a variety of peppermint oils and other products that seemed to be popular with our group.

Open from spring to autumn.
Only 1000 yen for an all-day pass (I think it was the same for adults/kids).
This is in Wakamatsu area in Kitami (you will need a car to go there. about 10-15 minutes drive from Kitami station I think it was.)
My daughter and I have been there in May, July and September. We went there on weekdays so there were only one or two parties in the entire amusement park. I hate having to line-up for attractions so it was the best thing that we never had to line-up for any rides. Suitable for very young children (2 years old) and older children (I would say up to 10 or 12).
If you are tired of crowds, this is like heaven. We had a wonderful time.

We visited on New Years day. We offered our donations to the shrine and followed the lead of those in front of us in the line. There were a lot of people but it added to the excitement of our experience. There were some stalls selling fortunes and trinkets, all in Japanese so we got ours and then asked someone's help translating later. Nice New Year's day activity, but if you do go on New Years be prepared to park far away as its busy.

There were around 60 red foxes in a fairly spacious compound but the exterior looked run down.
It was pleasant to see foxes up close and roaming around. However, some were in cages. Overall they didn't look satisfied and some were quite skinny. It was a bit of a let down as the foxes were clearly unenthusiastic just like the park staff. Foxes are beautiful like many animals but they really didn't look happy. Maybe by their nature, they tend to be shy and weary with human visitors in close proximity. Maybe they were over crowded.
My kids always get excited with the zoo or farm but they didn't enjoyed this place much. Hmm...
Our GPS pointed us only to the Clock Tower outside, so if you drive, just follow the signboard to get behind the building after the Clock Tower and you will see the farm. You will need to cross a little bridge to get here.
