Going to the mine is a unique thing to do anyway and here you are going in all the way you can imagine. Helmets on and Srečno. The guide was amazing, the people there at the museum very helpful and here you are it was wonderful. No preparation needed and no special tools or equipment just go and have fun.

We visit this castel during our stay in Idrija. It is a great castle, ver well renovated. There is a city museum in the castle with the collection of mining history documents, stones and laces which are hand made in Idrija by local women and very well known.
It was a great tour. We took also guide to the outher parts of the museum: mining house, Frančečka jašek and Jožefov jaše with a lot of mining devices, trains, house equipment.
You can really feel how miners lived in those days.
You can leran a lot by visiting this museum.

Idrija Tourist Information Centre provides excellent service from knowledgeable staff. Tourism services include information about accommodation, events,local businesses, gift shop, brochures and maps.

Very little information particularly about walks. They could really get lots more people to this area if they just create some minor infrastructure for visitors.

Urban, one of the staff from the Museum at the castle, took us for an excellent 1 hour walk across Idrija explaining to us about the history of mercury mining in Idrija and how the industry changed over the years. Finished at the amazing kamst - which is another word for 'water wheel'. It is 13.5metres in diameter. Urban was non-technical but very interesting and with a good sense of humour. We are a New Zealand couple in our late 60's and we handled the 1 hour walk easily. Warmly recommended.

This starts from WW I and takes you to modern times, the gentleman is very knowledgeable, but speaks Slovenian so bring an interpreter, or maybe this can be arranged. For a small museum, it is jammed packed with items of interest. From the italians that occupied, to the Germans in WW II (event an autograph from Hitler, and authentic) to the Parisian movement to Tito, to the Yugoslavian army. The gentleman in charge was event part of the elite Yugoslavian Presidential guard, and at the end I was event offered some blueberry snaps, :) was delicious.

The miner's house was built at the end of the 18th century and has preserved the main features of typical Idrija architecture and living culture of the past. The structure of the house, except for the foundataions and cellar, is built almost entirely of wood, while the roof is covered with fir boards – »sinklni«. The ground floor is furnished in the style of the first half of the 20th century.

Only the ground floor is furnished, but it is interesting. just next door to the Francis Mine. You need to book a visit with a guide from the Castle Museum ... really no hassle here and worth doing all three small museums (House, Francis and Wheel) to help you really get an understanding of the workings of the mine.

We visited here after going down the mine. It was a little tricky to find - some additional signage would be helpful. We were the only people there so had a guide all to ourselves! He was friendly and informative with outstanding English. The tour was fascinating and lasted about 30 minutes. The exhibition was well thought through with both information boards and some interactive activities. Highly recommended.

An old shaft and part of metal foundry are now open for visitors. They prepared new exhibition with exact description of mercury extraction. Very interestin when you combine it with old shaft - (Antonijev rov) and with main presentation in the museum. Worth a visit. You will need more than an hour.
