Handy location

First up I'll be honest that the rooms are smal(ish), but certainly the room we had was on a par with city centre budget hotels and plenty big enough for a couple of nights. With that said, there's nothing else to fault about the hotel for what it offers at the price. Staff are friendly and helpful, there's a rooftop onsen which is large enough for the size of the hotel (even offering an outdoor pool) and free ramen supper if you fancy a late snack. The rooms are spotless and the location is very convenient for the rail and bus stations, the port and the main shops/restaurants with the bonus of a small supermarket just across the road. If we end up back in Abishiri we'll use this hotel again.

Onsen Paradise Hotel Review

This hotel is located just beside the entrance to the Jikokudani and is around 5 mins walk from the bus station crossing the onsen street. As I am travelling solo, thus the room I could get is western room and it looks like recently renovated. My room plan also included Japanese Kaiseki dinner which is good and buffet breakfast in the morning. Note that the hotel offer other room plan too, such as Japanese room with dinner serving in a restaurant or in room. There are also plan for buffet dinner too. Even without meal plan for your room, the hotel does have other restaurants or you could always find something at the onsen street. This hotel has a very big onsen bath overlooking the Jikokudani: Grand Bath with 5 different spring waters and a total of 35 different baths for male and female, indoor and outdoor. There is also a pool for kids under the grand bath. For onsen lover, this is indeed an onsen paradise, which I have spent about 1 hr+ X 2 visits! This is definitely a great hotel for onsen lover!

1980’s monstrosity

Reviewed By Nils W

This is a typical ’boom & bust’ hotel, like the thousands of similar hotels you see all over Japan. It’s enormous, with lobbies, restaurands an common areas the size of airport hangars, huge rooms with separate tatami areas and massive onsens. All of which is in various stage of decay. This particular hotel is set back from the harbour, up on the hillside, presumably for tsunami reasons, which means you have to drive everywhere, to the boat tours in the harbour and the really nice little seafood shacks on the waterfront. The hotel offers, like all Japanese hotels, a myriad of ’settu’ options, all very confusing: breakfast, dinner and onsen package. Ditto with unlimited sake. Lunch and onsen and a spa treatment; don’t take any of these. The food is terrible by Japanese standards, and the gigantic restaurant is more like a East German Communist Party Headquarters canteen circa 1953 than a restaurant. You know whst I mean. Our room was huge, but with peeing wallpaper, slightly smelly damp wall-to-wall carpeting and (my pet hate) one of those pre-fab plastic bathrooms which has all the solidity of a bouncy castle. Our friends stayed at the Kitanokobushi Shiretoko Hotel, and I wish we had too. This is actually built this millennium and is right on the water. I highly recommend you stay there instead. As for me, I am thoroughly fed up with these depressing, smelly 1980’s concrete monsters.

I had written a review after staying at Akan Yuku no Sato Tsuruga last June. Since I wanted to see autumn leaves in Hokkaido I went to Lake Akan again in October and naturally I chose to stay at Akan Yuku no Sato Tsuruga again because of the good experience. The room I picked was a standard twin room which was very spacious with a writing desk and from where I could see the lake. Comfy and neat. The buffet dinner with fresh spot prawns among other seafood and sashimi was as impressive as last time. Fully enjoyed it! Eagerly tried the two outdoor onsen as well as another indoor one at the adjacent building. The views at the outdoor ones were unbeatable! I wish I could be there again soon!

Staff were very helpful, we had a wonderful time and a good view of Lake Shikotsu from our room.

Great setting and location, very average food

Reviewed By PJDG

We stayed here for 3 nights in August 2020. The ryokan is in a great location, and is within comfortable driving range of a number of must see attractions in Akan National Park. The staff are also super friendly and very welcoming. The setting is also beautiful, and very relaxing . We paid a bit more for an upgrade room which was definitely worth it for the extra space and the view (see note below re. the room temperature though). For us however, the food is not a reason to stay at La Vista Akangawa. I guess this comes down to personal taste, but my wife and I found the food to be average at best. We love ryokan meals generally, and we were really looking forward to the meals - but unfortunately the standard was in our opinion surprisingly poor given the other reviews on this site. Maybe we caught them on an off week when the ingredients were not good quality or something similar. They also desperately need to clean the windows of the building - particularly in the restaurant. The beautiful view onto the river is spoiled by how dirty the floor to ceiling windows have become. Such a shame because the view would otherwise have been amazing. Not really what you expect for the prices being charged. The room was great, nice and spacious, with a lovely bath looking out onto the river. The only issue was the temperature - the air con doesn't seem to be particularly effective. When you are paying such high prices you expect the room temperature to be manageable, and the windows to be clean! So in summary, the location and setting is superb, but I don't think that alone justifies the price tag given the average food and other issues mentioned above. We won't be staying here again - i would have given it 2.5 stars, but felt 2 stars was too harsh, so rounded up to 3.

Memorable stay with 5star hospitality

Reviewed By chihosucre

We stayed for 2 nights with my son and parents. Unfortunately the weather was not the best even though this hotel is famous for its ocean front view. Yet still their hospitality never made us bored or disappointed. All the staff were so welcoming and the hotel dog “Moco” is so cute to spend time with her. Hotel lounge is always open with morning/lunch/night drinks& snacks depending on the time of the day and it leads to the ocean view pass way. Jackets, hats, umbrellas and towels for outside foot bath are prepared at the pass way door in case the guests need them to stroll. Such a great hospitality in details! It’s a traditional ”Ryokan” style but some area is decorated with mid-century furniture and looks modern and stylish. Onsen bath is very relaxing with full amenity prepared. You can even pampered with cold sorbet after Onsen! Dinner and breakfast are simply amazing! They looked beautiful and tasted fantastic. I cannot think of any other choice for my next visit in Hokkaido.

Fantastic view, average hotel

Reviewed By thatsfresh

Was in Niseko for the first time for a ski trip and decided to stay at Kanro due to decent reviews on Agoda. However we were not impressed by the service as none of the hotel staff could speak fluent English. Only a couple of them could manage simple English while the rest didn’t understand at all. They do have a few staff from China so good thing we spoke Chinese. Hotel guests are mainly Chinese tourists and local Japanese people, which explains why none of the staff spoke good English. Breakfast buffet was good but dinner buffet was quite a disappointment with very few choices and mostly cold dishes. It is located 10mins drive away from Annapuri ski resort and 30mins drive away from Hirafu welcome centre. There is free shuttle bus service. We didn’t mind the distance since the hotel is very close to Moiwa ski resort (3mins by driving) where we spent most of our time at. Ski rental at hotel is cheap but equipment is dated. I even found a used plaster in a pair of gloves I rented. Do not recommend renting your equipment from the hotel at all. And although there is a ski centre at the hotel next to the rental shop, none of the staff could speak English so we had to book our ski lesson through the Chinese staff at front desk. Rooms are spacious and clean however not so sound proof. During our stay we could hear our next door neighbors talking and their baby crying. Did not use the hotel onsen but I heard it is good and famous for making your skin beautiful. Lastly we really enjoyed the view at the hotel restaurant. Amazing winter view of the woods and hill which made our stay worthwhile.
