Great place for a family gathering

~ From Tokyo or Osaka: Take a train (Shinkansen) or bus (Willer,...) to Nagano City, from there get on the train heading to Yudanaka and stop at Yudanaka Station. ~ From there, take the bus for Kanbayashi or Shigakogen from Yudanaka station (Nagano dentetsu line) and get off at Shibuwagobashi bus stop (about 7min). The bus stop is located in front of the bridge (Shibuwagobashi) along the Yokoyu river. The hostel is just 2 minutes walk away at this point. Walk up the stream a little, take the first left (just opposite to the bridge), go straight and turn right at the second corner, from there walk straight up and you will see Nozaru hostel (four-storied building: the old name is Komatsuya-ryokan) just before the Onsen temple.
CHEAPEST IN TOWN. NICE HOOD. BIG ROOMS. ONSEN INCLUDED. "CLOSE" TO THE MONKEYS.
Reviewed By ExithamsterWe booked Nozaru Hostel because it was the cheapest (around 40€) in the area AND one of the closest stays to the Snow Monkeys. Which doesn't mean next door. You still either need to walk 45 mins or take a bus and walk 25 mins to reach the entrance of the park. The bus (no.1) ride from the station to Nozaru Hostel takes about 7 minutes and leaves once or twice an hour. You get off at Shibuwagobashi Station and walk 4 mins to the hostel. It is quite a big building with 4 or 5 floors. The overall impression is a bit worn down and with some more dedication you could create a really nice hostel. They have an onsen on the ground floor which is used for the shower as well though it was not very busy. Our room was in the 4th floor and we had a nice view. Unfortunately you couldn't open the windows - they were taped. What we really didn't enjoy so much was the cold temperatures inside the room - especially when you have to turn the heater on every 5 minutes. The Japanese style sleep on the futon was fine though - covered in duvets. And one very positive aspect: It was spacious! Enough space for luggage and chill out sessions on the matress. The receptionist lady who seemed to be the owner spoke very good English and was helpful with everything we needed. It is just a pity that they don't put more effort into this place as it is perfectly located in the onsen street. We are not picky but in this case it is hard to rate "very good" or "excellent".

Clean, quiet, traditional and gracious hospitality
Reviewed By nocalfamilyMy family of 4 (including 2 teenage boys) stayed 3 nights here and wished for longer. Our quad room w/private bathroom was very spacious and had every amenity (yukata, soap, shampoo, hair dryer, hot water, tea bags, biscuits) and more. We found our traditional futon beds to be plush and comfortable for a good night's sleep. The shower (excellent water pressure/temperature), toilet and sink were modern and well appointed. AC was great. We used the onsen (women's upstairs, men's downstairs) each night around 9pm, never saw anyone. The onsen is clean and serves its purpose, but be aware it's not a huge onsen you'd find in a larger spa. We were lucky to have dinner (2000 yen, I think) and breakfast (800 yen) at the inn's dining room. Both beautifully prepared and delicious, including Hida beef (amazing!) with miso at dinner. We found the innkeeper (and chef!) to be gracious and accommodating. She greeted us warmly when we arrived, knew exactly who we were, pointed out a storage cubby for shoes and slippers for indoors. The inn is a short walk from the bus/train station, across the street from a beautiful temple, and around the corner from a street full of restaurants and shops. I'd recommend Maruaki Hida Takayama, just a half block away, but go before 6pm to avoid a long wait. All in all, we loved our stay. My advice: reserve in advance at least 1 dinner and/or breakfast--you won't regret it. Also some of the rooms don't have private bathrooms, so just know what you're booking.

Reviewed By leob258This ryokan style hotel has been recently refurbished. Its warm, comfortable and the staff are super friendly. You have ti walk up the mountain a bit to get to it, but it such a practical location to stay at, you are closer to the yu road. The ogawa open air hot spring is near by, restaurants close. Bars down the hill a bit and free parking. Id recommend the room 203, one of the larger rooms, with tv, toilet ,plenty of room up to 6 or 7 people to sleep on mattresses. And the view is spectacular. This hotel does have drying room for gear, and plenty of room to leave gear.restaurant is excellent for dinner and breakfast. The hotel is on 3 or 4 floors, with no lift. Staff are top

Reviewed By jcbolayA small guest house headed by a friendly owner who will come for you at the railway station and bring you home, a little bit far of the center of the city. For 70 euros you will have a comfortable room with 2 prepared futons, a small balcony and a wonderful view on the Fuji. Shower and restroom are shared among 3-4 rooms and a typical Japanese breakfast is included. A + is free bikes for the customers and a - is the kitschy deco of the room. A nice opportunity in this place, and an owner who will advise you warmly on what to do in the region. (Excellent support at the tourist office in the station)

Reviewed By TripswayerLocation : 24km from Ryotsu Ferry Terminal, can only be accessible by car, or indirect bus (1 transfer) and bus only runs every 2 hour, if you miss once, a.k.a you miss a morning. In my case i cycled there with overnight bicycle rental ( 2000yen) since its too far to return in 1 day. Then its pretty much 15-30 km away from attraction. It has seaview , from afar, it is Not seaside, it is on the hill looking down to a highway and the sea. Facilities and cleaness: good, japanese standard Service: the owner is ok, but she does not speak english much, when i emailed snd ask ger how to go from ferry terminal to the hotel, she ask me to ask others,never mentioned the complications of the bus service there. And surprisingly enough, her follow-up emailS were to convince me to order dinner and breakfast there, dinner at 2000 yen, quite expensive compared to the price there. i didnt explore the island since i only planned gor 1 night stay and did not have appropriate trabsport to go around.

Unfortunately the location was not good at all, you need to drive 40 minutes to train station and probably 20 minutes to find a shop. However if you don't mind about this, it still a nice hotel.

Like all hotels and Ryokans in Japan, it is up to the same standard nothing out of the ordinary. Check in was not the friendliness ever. We felt like the owner was a. dictator. We are paying guests. Bath-time was regulated. We had to sign up when we should take our bath and no bath in the morning- only at night at our signed up slot. Breakfast was the same. 8 sharp. dinner was the same. We had to be back in the inn by 10 pm. It was too much. I would highly not recommend to stay here unless you like to be controlled by the most unfriendly owner in the whole of Japan. We are not children and we paid for our stay. There are plenty of places to stay at Lake Kawaguchiko.

wonderful minshuku run by great couple
Reviewed By fkoshidoI and my husband stayed for 3 days here to visit snow monkey park. This hotel ( minshuku ) is run by great couple . They are helpful to pick us up at yudanaka station and drop us near monkey park. Although Nagano in February was quite cold having snow , the room was very warm and cozy. Because of their hospitality and kindness we had such a wonderful time.
