10 Lodges in Michigan: Best hotel deals for 2023

April 18, 2023 Rosalyn Ihle

Think you need an ocean for a beach? Think again. There are miles and miles of sandy lakefront beaches in Michigan (thanks to the four Great Lakes that border it). The west coast of Michigan has especially nice beaches—try a rental in Muskegon, Grand Haven or Saugatuck. You won’t need a car when visiting Mackinac Island. In fact, they’re not allowed—this lovely Victorian resort town is pedestrian-only.

Warm whirlpool for the winter

What a lovely place to stay in the off season! I had one of the king rooms with a big whirlpool. Service was friendly and we had everything we needed except some silverware for takeout. Otherwise, the island was so calm and relaxing compared to the busy summer season

Black River Lodge

Black River Lodge has been a staple family destination for traveler's looking to explore the beauty of Ironwood and the Western U.P. of Michigan for decades. The lodge is a one of a kind in the Ironwood area... a hidden gem with lots of U.P. charm. We are not a standard style hotel. While we have some similar amenities, we operate much different and our layout/rooms are unique. The lodge is not considered upscale, but cozy and homey (after all, it is our year 'round home). The atmosphere is more laid back and social. Consider it along the lines of a very large house/chalet with a few perks. Our rooms are unique and sleep 2-10 people depending on the unit. All have at least one or two private bathrooms. Some have kitchens or 4 or more beds to maximize savings. Group friendly. Dog Friendly. Family Friendly. The lodge offers a large indoor pool/hot tub, a fully stocked resort-style bar, 65 acres in a remote locale and a few different common areas to relax with your family and friends.

Fun and Relaxing Stay

We thoroughly enjoyed our night in the Gitche-Gami room at BRL. It was spacious, clean, and comfortable. The pictures on the website don't do it justice! Although we've been to Ironwood many times on our way to the Porkies over the past 20 years, we've never stayed there on our journey. We're so happy we changed that. Brittany told us about the harbor and falls just a few miles away, which allowed us to enjoy a sunrise viewing of both. She also had some great suggestions for supper -- places we have heard of or tried. Again, her recommendations were spot on! We're excited to have BRL as an additional lodging option for journeys to the UP twice a year. I'm sure they'll see us again!

The room was perfect, roomy, extremely clean with an attention to detail. Bed was comfortable and linens were nice. Location was ideal for walking downtown or to Lake Huron to enjoy all Lexington has to offer. We had drinks and appetizers at both the Village Pub and the Windjammer. We returned to the Windjammer for dinner (prime rib was delicious). We had a great night and would definitely recommend to others.

Colonial Motel is my new favorite in the UP!

Reviewed By Thorn054

I was traveling through the UP solo on a business trip and stayed the night at this wonderful motel after reading all of the positive reviews about it. The motel is impeccably clean and the room was very, very comfortable. In fact, I haven’t slept that well while on the road in a long time! While the motel is updated has all of the modern things you need like WI-FI, satellite TV, etc, it has a cool retro vibe about it that you can’t get at a large hotel chain. In fact, my room had some very nice, framed, vintage travel ads on the wall and the original tile in the bathroom (which was also spotless). The location is also near restaurants and across the street from Lake Michigan so you’re close to many fun things to see and do when you stay here. The owner, Michael, runs the place himself and is a super nice guy too. You can really tell he cares about the motel and the comfort of his guests. He was also very helpful in providing dining recommendations in the area so be sure to ask him if you’re looking for a good spot to eat. I highly recommend staying here and I’m definitely planning to return with my family for a longer stay next time!

Housekeeping Cabins are a gem in Isle Royale National Park

Reviewed By maureenwC7163UU

The Housekeeping Cabins sit above Tobin Harbor out of the fray. They are a good size, the bed was comfortable and plenty of warm blankets which we needed in May. Electric heat worked well (we had to turn it down at night) and there was plenty of hot water. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook, but you must bring all your own food including condiments. The little dressing room off the bathroom is great for gear storage. The best part is the huge picture window across the front looking out on the harbor- eagles, loons, moose. A great place to relax after a day of hiking or boating. The housekeeping staff works hard and is customer oriented. Management is very responsive to concerns. This IS NOT a five star hotel- it is a comfy cabin on a remote island in the middle of Lake Superior and well worth the trip and expense to have a warm and dry place to land while experiencing the amazing Isle Royale National Park. We will be back!

Family Bonding

Reviewed By 246erickw

This was the best family vacation ever. We stayed in a cottage in the summer of 2021 and before we left we booked for summer of 2022. Where to begin.... we have 3 kids age 7-12, this place and vacation reminded me of the vacations I would take as a kid. Our kids didn't want to be on their electronics. They were outside playing in the water or on the soccer field every waking moment they had. They made multiple friends that week. By the end of the week we were having dinners and going to restaurants with some of the other families. What a great throwback to the way vacations should be!
