10 hotels in Yakushima-cho: Best hotel deals for 2023

September 17, 2022 Yuk Petri

Seize the beautiful day on the Osumi Island of Yakushima-cho, covered in gorgeous and dense forest that’s said to have inspired the classic anime film Princess Mononoke. Frolic with native deer, red-bottomed monkeys and migratory sea turtles (as much as you can frolic with a turtle, anyway), while you breathe in the sweet scent of ancient Japanese cedar. Yakushima’s unique eco-system is simultaneously subtropical and subarctic, an environmental anomaly that only enhances the unique and special properties of the island.

Serene ryokan with phenomenal staff

Reviewed By juliafliesaround

A traditional Japanese style ryokan in serene surroundings. Our room had a beautiful view of the river and greenery. In the day time, a table was set up with a traditional tea set, and when we got back in the evenings, it was transformed into the bedroom with our beds neatly made for us. The onsite onsen was a welcome facility after days of hiking. This place is close to the Miyanoura Port, and right next to the bus stop that you need to get around the whole island. The people who run this place are incredible, they went out of their way to help us get around the place, and treated us like family. Highly recommend a stay here to unplug and unwind.

Impressive and one of the highlights of my trip

I love this place. We booked a sea view room and there are no regrets. The service is excellent. The rooms are clean and very comfortable. The dinners were exquisite. The outdoor onsen is a bit small but the views are wonderful. I will definitely return. Yakushima is everything it promised it would be and this hotel is the cherry on top of the cake.

Okay for a 3* Hotel

We spent three nights here and were mostly satisfied with the experience. They offer a good range of rooms and we selected an ocean view. The view was great but you can only open the window about 6cm. It would have been really nice to open the window wider as it was warm-ish and there was no a/c available at this time. The staff were really wonderful, though. They were always helpful, knew who we were, gave great information, were flexible and always always warm and welcoming. The television has one English language channel though the volume is limited which makes it difficult to hear. The internet, at least on our floor, was really slow and even loading Facebook required waiting. The room was a nice size but the towels were small, bright yellow and cheap. The onsen was shallow - suggest you try the place next door with the hot rocks. There are several restaurants within a 5 minute walk. The hotel is about 20 minutes walk from the ferry terminal (we took a taxi). I don’t know what other options are available. The Green Hotel seems about the best you could expect here. We weren’t unhappy but there was nothing, other than the staff, to rave about.

Comfortable, convenient and excellent service!

Reviewed By Fredrik Smith S

Already before we arrived, our host Mr Ryosaku Nakashima contacted us to let us know the easiest ways to get to the compound, and travel time from the harbour. While we were taking the ferry across to the island, he helped me plan car rental via mail so we could save time when we arrived. We arrived two hours before check in time, but since we haf told him our estimated arrival time in advance, he had the cabin ready for us already then so we could check in immediately. After a warm welcome, and thorough tour of compound and room he quickly arranged a rental car for us, which was delivered to the compound soon after. He gave us valuable tips for things to do and see, and booked a sea turtle tour for us. Due to some rain and bad weather when we visited, the tour was cancelled twice, but he always kept us updated on the weather forecast, and rebooked the tour for us. And so eventually we got to see the sea turtles laying eggs on the beach the day before we left. We were taken excellent care of, and supplied with everything we could need (including shoe-dryer when we returned soaked from a rainy hike!) from the ever friendly and smiling staff. We stayed for 4 nights, and will gladly come back if we return to Yakushima in the future. We would heartily recommend staying here to anyone looking for a quiet and comfortable stay on the island, and a good base for enjoying all the island has to offer. Thank you for your excellent service and hotel, and we hope to return one day! Regards, Fredrik and Ingvild

It was my first trip to Yakushima with my family and a friend couple who leaving Japan soon. I went to Yakushima with very little prep (we watched "Princess Mononoke" again and read about some hiking trails, that's about it...) but thanks to the owner of this hotel (she guided us and showed us a lot!), it became an unforgettable trip for us. The hotel is minimum and only has two guess rooms and shared living room but beautiful just like the image in the photos, but thing we enjoyed most there was the friendliness and welcoming energy of the owner. her great personality made our island experience very special. Breakfast they served was great too. The home-grown organic vegetables were sweat and delicious! Eggs from 2 hens they have there and homemade bread were delicious too. There were awesome Onsens (hot springs) near the hotel (5mins by car). The mid-night hot spring experience under the stars and with sound of waves sent us to another world, and the other one the owner of the hotel highly recommended, Onoaida Onsen was very special too! Although the water is quite hot, it was very good onsen water you can enjoy in the historical and nostalgic atmosphere. The living space that guests can use freely was also great spot at the hotel. There were many books such as music, travel, photos, all other kind of art and food, including the magazines called "Saunter" which were issued by the owner's husband, and this is fantastic space to relax and spend time on a rainy day. Big resort hotels may be great too, but you experience another level of happiness which is perfect especially for your Yakushima island trip at this hotel. I cannot describe all we had there, so I recommend you to try it yourself by visiting the island and staying with the,! I'm sure that we will visit there again.

Great food and service

I stayed in a western twin room as a solo traveller - it was a good size with a separate raised area with a mat and table. Also had it's own shower and toilet. All of the staff were very friendly and went out of their way to be helpful on multiple occasions e.g. came and found me to let me know the latest situation with Yakusugi Land after I had enquired earlier (there was an incoming typhoon) and walked me over to the bus stop after I couldn't find it (the map didn't show the bus stop as being right outside the airport). The staff were also a great help explaining ferry schedules and the bus timetable/system (not great as infrequent although of course nothing to do with the hotel). I stayed 3 nights (one more than originally intended due to the typhoon) and dinner was great (and different) each night - a variety of small to medium-size dishes (sashimi, fish cooked in a variety of ways, clams, pork, shabu shabu) together with rice, soup, dessert and tea. Breakfast was also good (although not as good as dinner) with a good selection of items. There is an inside and outside onsen. Main two things for improvement from my perspective: -the mattress was a bit hard for my liking -the WiFi was slow and I had more luck using the 4G connection on my phone most of the time

Great cottage, hosts and location

Reviewed By beersushi

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights while visiting Yakushima at the end of September staying in a Skydeck & Terrace bath room. In short we had an absolutely amazing and lovely time. The cottage itself is cute, well kept and clean. The hosts are very friendly and helpful, during our stay they helped book hiking bento’s for us (delicious!), recommend a local restaurant for dinner, as well as phone book a taxi (we are English speakers with only limited Japanese) for us one evening so we could visit a Izakaya in nearby Anbo for some drinks! We hiked most days, but loved coming back each night to the relaxing hot steel bath, as well as yummy complimentary desserts from the hosts! The small kitchen was plenty for us to be able to cook our own meals purchased from the Supermarket nearby (10 minute drive), yum! And the skydeck is magnificent to view the stars, we were lucky enough to have a clear night during our stay, beautiful! As with most of Yakushima you will need a car to get here and around the island, we were able to access all our chosen hiking trail-heads with approx. 45minutes from this accomodation which was super convenient, another great plus. I could go on and on about this location, it really was perfect for us (I haven’t even mentioned the nearby ice-cream shop, restaurants and beach onsens!). I really hope we can come back someday and stay again!

I just stayed here for four nights during a hiking trip to wonderful Yakushima. While booking, I chose the "new building" option and it turned out to be great with immaculately clean facilities. Highly recommended. It is a great gem for the price.

Guesthouse Yakushima

Guesthouse Yakushima has been newly built and opened in Feb. 2014. To create a high quality and reasonable guesthouse is our concept. Locating at the southern part of Yakushima, it is cool in summer and warm in winter.

Cozy cottage in the forest. Affordable and far-located from downtown.

This is a cottage south of Yakushima. Very lovely place with affordable prices. The location is quite suburb. With a car, there's no problem. Without a car, the bus schedule is the most important information to travel. Location: 5~10 min walk from bus stop #87 鯛ノ川(Tainokawa). The viewpoint of トローキの滝(Toroki Falls) 屋久島町まごころ市 ぽん・たん館(local product shop) are close. And nothing else nearby. Guests without cars would better not miss the last bus at 6~7 pm. Botanical Research Park is one stop away. The location is between southwest and southeast touristic areas by the way. Facility: Well-maintained cottage with several rooms. Kitchen lounge is so big and comfortable. Guests need to be careful not to open doors to prevent bugs from inside. Coin washer is outside. It's good to run in the early morning or late night. Service: The manager is very gentle and active to help guests' itineraries. He leaves the facility in the evening and comes in the morning. He speaks proper English. Rice ball lunch request in advance is also available with 520 yen.
