Kumage-gun Yakushima-cho Food Guide: 10 Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Kumage-gun Yakushima-cho

February 27, 2018 Venice Greaves

Seize the beautiful day on the Osumi Island of Yakushima-cho, covered in gorgeous and dense forest that’s said to have inspired the classic anime film Princess Mononoke. Frolic with native deer, red-bottomed monkeys and migratory sea turtles (as much as you can frolic with a turtle, anyway), while you breathe in the sweet scent of ancient Japanese cedar. Yakushima’s unique eco-system is simultaneously subtropical and subarctic, an environmental anomaly that only enhances the unique and special properties of the island.

I had lunch at this restaurant during my stayed in Miyanoura town in Yakushima island. I was visitded at 11:30, and almost table were getting full occupancy at noon. The restaurant was very popular restaurant for tourists and local people.
Walls are decorated with signatures of celebrities that have been coming to the restaurant so far.
Lunch set meals were provided at about 1500 yen. Sashimi and tempura set meal were provided a tourist price, about 2000 yen. I ordered the black pig bowl and tempura, those meals were made of fresh ingredients. Taste is was very delicious, but I felt prices were a little bit expensive.

Really enjoyed our meal here. The meat was tasty and well prepared. The chicken rice was a welcome addition to the grilled meat medley and I was surprised at how enjoyable grilled cabbage is. The staff were friendly and although my Japanese is limited we were able to muddle through. Also they have an English menu which although it clearly doesn't cover the full range of what they offer it's broad enough to give you a tasty meal. Definitely recommended.

My friend and I stumbled upon Nomado Café while driving from the airport to our accommodation. We decided to come here for tea after we have checked in. It is a very lovely place and I love their ice creams. The staff is very friendly and will help to translate their Japanese menu. We come here twice during our 4nights stay. Their lunch menu is yummy.

We spent 3 nights in Yakushima so we tried quite a few restaurants, including all those ranked high on Tripadvisor. We found this restaurant to be the best. It's a small restaurant but when we went for lunch, we had no trouble getting a table. We had their flying fish set lunch, tonkatsu set lunch and their broken-neck mackerel sashimi as a side. All 3 were delicious. Way better than the #1 ranked Shiosai and more reasonably priced too. The broken-neck mackerel was so good; I have never seen them outside of Yakushima. Unfortunately, we ate there on the last day, which was a bummer because if given a chance, we probably would have eaten there all 3 days!

Jiijiya

Reviewed By Matthew C - Singapore, Singapore

Our expectations for food in Yakushima were not high having been told by friends that it was hard to find somewhere good to eat. Jiijiya proved those expectations wrong and turned out to be a really excellent Japanese izakaya. They serve a wide variety of quite reasonably priced dishes and it is clear that the staff take a real pride in the food. The staff are young and the place has a modern feel with cool music playing giving the place an atmosphere somewhere between a wine bar and a more traditional izakaya. We were a hungry group of 5 who normally eat enough for 10 and we tried a wide range of the menu items, many of which taste much better than they sound. For example the slow cooked pork cartilage rice bowl was absolutely delicious as was the bonito rice bowl. The sashimi selection included flying fish and broken-neck mackerel and was superb. We also tried the local speciality, something I've often seen and never fancied trying - a hot-pot (nabe) based on intestines and vegetables. It was delicious, especially when the residual soup is mixed with rice to create a kind of Japanese risotto. There were many less exotic and equally delicious items on the menu too and it all washed down very nicely with glasses of draft ichiban shibori. Lots and lots of food for about JPY3000 per head, and you could easily eat for a lot less. Excellent value, good service and really great food.

The food served at this family-owned restaurant is of excellent quality and taste. We dined here for two nights and tried 4 different dishes -- all excellent. They are very reasonably priced too. The setting is pretty cosy too. The restaurant is near the bus-stop and starts around 5.30pm, so for those who don't drive, there is enough time for a good meal and catch the bus back to Mugio and Onoida.

This is a great ocean front restaurant just a few min. walk from the Anbo port. It opens at 11am. They specialize in Udon + many different combination options, flying fish, shrimp tempura, curry, etc. etc. (no soba). The soup is so so but adding spiced hot Yuzu oil becomes delicious. They also have wasabi oil. The prices are a little higher than other places but it is made up by the view from the restaurant. This place also have a camp site (800yen a night). They have covered BBQ pit and benches. It looked great for snorkeling among the rocky and clean and clear blue water.

The place is gorgeous, it is yet simple but very traditional and cosy! The food was really good and the service delightful. Last but not least it is insanely cheap for the quality offered. It was something around (1000 yens) 10 dollars for a full set!
