Hotel Parador de Villafranca del Bierzo

At the entrance to Villafranca del Bierzo, town of churches, monasteries, convents and fine buildings, stands this Parador, the leading tourist accommodation in the fascinating El Bierzo district. It is surrounded by mountains covered with cherry and fig trees, slopes dotted with chestnuts, poplars and small farms. The building is clad in stone and slate, in the vernacular style of the region. The interior exudes all the elegance, class and comfort of a contemporary building, especially the large restaurant, café and guest lounge. This last room is a particularly pleasant spot to meet and chat. Large windows in the guest rooms offer extraordinary views of the northwestern El Bierzo district and southern Ancares Mountains. In the garden you can enjoy the seasonal swimming pools, one of which has a sauna with ice fountain. The pilgrimage route to Compostela stops for a brief rest in Villafranca del Bierzo, offering a small taste of what lies ahead in the Galician capital. Santiago Church; the famous Los Tejedores (Weavers) neighborhood; La Anunciada, a building constructed atop the ruins of an old pilgrim hospital; and the collegiate church are just some of the important sights for visitors. Outside town, nature offers up gorgeous picture postcard views. 20 minutes away by car, you will discover Las Médulas de Carucedo, a historic site and one of the most stunning landscapes in the province of León. Without a doubt, it is the jewel of El Bierzo. Because of its unique features, this spectacular reddish landscape, which was a gold mine in Roman times, has been declared a World Heritage Site. And because of its historical importance, it is also a cultural park. The Way of St. James has bestowed on Villafranca del Bierzo a location you will not want to miss the chance to discover. Pay us a visit. You won't be disappointed

Avoid the Duck

Reviewed By Skipoffwork

We stayed here for one night and ate in the restaurant. I had the duck, which was very lightly cooked. I gave one slice of it to my wife to try. Six hours later, at 3 a.m., I will spare you the details, but we were both very ill and had a wretched night. My wife was not quite so bad as I. The next morning I reported this to the concierge. Fortunately, he told me, no-one else had had the duck last night and no-one else had reported sick. The cook reported that the duck was always fine and this was not likely to be the problem. I urged the concierge to make sure no-one else ate that duck but he did not appear to take me seriously, despite me telling him that we are both medically qualified and had suffered all the symptoms of food poisoning.

Super hotel in very quiet, residential area minutes from town centre

Reviewed By sandra h

There is a choice of room location within this hotel: the rear which gives directly on to the River Burbia - divine sounds of river all night. Great views of wooded hills on other side of river. The other side of the hotel gives out on to very quiet, little used, residential street. Spotlessly clean; good sized room; comfortable bed; good quality bed linen; great bathroom; helpful staff. Great location, 4 or 5 minutes from the lovely Alameda Garden/square; 3 minutes from river beach! and from official Camino route; 6 minutes or so to El Padrino restaurant and to the wonderful Casa Mendez restaurant. Great Value, too. Would definitely recommend.

Small clean room for 1 with a lovely view

Reviewed By 156bethk

I was staying alone and had a single bed in a small room. Everything was clean and nice. Fairly modern. I had window/doors that opened up To a balcony rail over a river with hills beyond. It was lovely. Also a great place to dry my clothes that I washed by hand. the restaurant that was fine. I would say usual fare, only €11 for lunch. Breakfast was toast, yogurt, apple, orange juice and coffee. Didn't get warm fuzzies from the staff but nothing was bad. A little hard to interpret peoples reactions with masks on during Covid.

BEDBUGS - and they don't care

Reviewed By Jane E

I booked 2 nights at this place in spite of mixed reviews because it looked like such a lovely old building. That was the only thing that was lovely about the place. Firstly, as others have said there is no one on site when you arrive to check in and no number displayed to call. I managed to find a number on line and when I called the person answering said they have a restaurant and were busy with Saturday lunch. That isn't the restaurant in the hotel because that one is firmly shut along with the courtyard and the communal kitchen. Anyway, she sent someone to check me in who wore her mask down under her chin during the whole process. So much for Spain's law mandating masks as part of the coronavirus prevention protocols. That aside the really appalling thing about this place was the bedbugs. I was covered in bites when the irritation woke me during the first night and I saw the bugs on the bottom sheet and was able to pop them to release the blood (my blood!) that they had consumed. Definitely a bedbug infestation. I spent the rest of the night on the floor having sent a text asking to be moved to another room without anticipating any response until the next day. Sure enough when I returned to the room mid-morning the same maskless woman had stripped the bed and was remaking it. When I suggested that there should be some sort of extermination treatment she insisted that there was no problem but did move me to another room. That means the next guests in Room 107 will also have bedbugs and the ones after them and the ones after them...... I am also betting that 107 isn't the only infested room given that the staff just turn the rooms over with no extermination or even a deep cleaning. These people have no apparent concern for hygiene or disease prevention. If they won't wear a mask and ignore bedbug infestations what chance is there that they are really cleaning between guests. DON'T GO THERE.
