Small charming hotel Nice, courteous and efficient reception and service. Good, clean and comfortable room. Breakfast and dinner a pleasant experience. I am glad, we stayed there.

Reviewed By SLEWSMTotal of 8-guests in 3 separate rooms. 2 rooms were assigned in Main Building and one in the Annex Building. Asked Reception if we can all be in the same building and was told to pay additional 6,000 yen. Later to find out the Annex Building is old and smelly! The room is old and unpleasant! Very disappointed with the lack of communication. We were not told the vast difference between the 2 buildings. Beware!

Beautiful rural ryokan
Reviewed By Tracey WLocated near the end of a rural road / track Miyowasure is a lovely modern traditional ryokan. The inn had a good English speaker on hand when we arrived and the team all were very friendly with sufficient understanding for us to enjoy our stay. Food was amazing, two of the best dinners of our trip. Location good for Kakunodate and surrounding sights.

Lovely staff a 10 minute walk from the train station
Reviewed By 148katfWe really enjoyed our stay here. The desk staff were very nice and charming. There's a short walk to the local onsen and I believe the inn will arrange for drop-off/pick-up in the evenings. The breakfast meal was traditional Japanese food with lots of small dishes.

Reviewed By JBN51We used this hotel as part of a JR package shinkansen + hotel + lift pass. All of the hotel staff were extremely polite and full of attention for any question. We were supposed to check in at 3pm but we got the room 2 hours before so that we could get changed to go skiing. Dinner was traditional Japanese menu from Akita prefecture. Breakfast was mainly Japanese buffet but with a lot of options though. The room (tatami and futon) was very wide and comfortable. On the last day of skiing and after checking out, we were allowed to use the onsen again. Highly recommend this hotel if you go to tazawako ski resort.

Reviewed By CatywliThough I stayed at the hotel 2 months ago, I think I should write something for this wonderful hotel. First is its tranquil environment and high standard of cleanliness. It makes me feel so peaceful and comfortable. The food impressed me the most. Both the dinner and breakfast were served in a separate private room opposite to our guest room. We were free to chat and drink without worrying to bother others. Both the dinner and breakfast offered great varieties and the taste was out of critics. The onsen is not big but is adequate. Staff are polite. Even they spoke a little bit English, I did not see it a problem as they tried hard to communicate with us and we could also use iPhone for translation. I enjoyed the stay very much.

Great onsen and sand bath
Reviewed By SimplykoThis hotel was a 2 hours drive from Akita airport. So, there is an old wing and new wing of the hotel. We followed the GPS by car and got to the old wing. Entered the building only to find the lobby abandoned and desolate. I saw an old woman walking around so I asked her where check-in was. She told me I had to walk to the new wing through a very shabby looking corridor. After a bit of confusion and heaving of luggages, we got to the main reception and checked in. (PS, if we drove to the new wing, there would be no need to walk in shabby corridors and the new lobby is actually quite decent.) One staff was helpful and even went to collect our car from the old building to park in front of the new building for us. Staff speak no English so we spoke in Japanese. The young lady who checked us in did not look very happy and did not smile at all. However, another lady who gave us a guide of the hotel facilities and led us to our rooms was very nice. She was also present for our breakfast and dinner as a server. The room was quite big but old. It was a traditional japanese style room. Someone would come into our room while we had dinner downstairs to make up our futon for us (which alarmed us a bit that they entered without asking). And will put the futon away in the morning for us. They provide tea and little snacks everyday. There was an indoor onsen which includes a bathing area. An outdoor onsen which does not have a shower area. There is also a special sand bath where you are buried till your neck in warm sand to remove impurities from your body. Later, you are required to wash your hair and rinse your body with water but no body soap for at least a few hours. This sand bath requires reservation at the reception and is about 1050yen plus entrance fee of 450yen. Dinner was really good. They were very nice and helpful to accommodate my partner's dietary needs. It will be best if you inform them beforehand. My partner however was a little annoyed with one of the servers who cooked his fish (It was shabu-shabu, so we should have done it ourselves) and broke his rice crackers into the soup when he was looking forward to do it himself. (She seemed to be in a hurry and wanted to get over and done with. Also, because my partner did not understand her, there was some misunderstanding. She might be trying to be helpful? But he did not appreciate her touching his food with her bare hands after cleaning the table next to us.) Breakfast for the first day was buffet style but the consecutive days were served as a set. Which seemed like leftovers from the buffet on the first day. Overall, we had a great time. The staff were helpful, we had a traditional experience, and the food was overall good. Water from the tap is mineral water from the mountains so it is safe to drink. The water made my complexion glow.

Taenoyu is a unique onsen in that men and women never miss out on any of the five baths available: the separate bath locations for men and women switch every evening. The open-air bath, which is gender mixed, feels like an infinity pool, and overlooks a giant waterfall at the edge of the space. With a backdrop of mountains covered with trees, the outdoor bath area immerses you in all of the natural beauty that Akita has to offer. One indoor bath has a rock-lined edge filled with orange-golden color water, and is almost an open-air bath itself, providing a view of the forest outside its wooden overhang. Another indoor bath is filled with stones and clear water, allowing you to experience a foot massage when you press your feet against the bottom of the bath. As you enter the ryokan, before taking the baths, enjoy an afternoon tea in the dining area also used to serve breakfast, with a view of a small river and various trees stretching across the mountain. A separate dining area is available for dinner, where many of Akita’s famous dishes, including kiritanpo and sansai, are served. The multi-course dinner is complemented with Akita’s local sake, or nihonshu, produced from Akita-grown rice and pure spring water.
Taenoyu
Reviewed By Lance_KerwinTaenoyu is one of my favourite onsens. One particular highlight about this place is their outdoor onsen with a magnifcent view of the falls. I will never forget that breathtaking scenery. Absolutely recommend Taenoyu.
