10 hotels in Oahu: Best hotel deals for 2023

June 22, 2022 Natalie Tallman

The Hawaiian island of Oahu is a surfer’s paradise, with swelling waves that can reach epic heights. No wonder, then, that it’s the site of one of the world’s premier competitions, the Triple Crown of Surfing. If hanging ten isn’t your thing, you can still enjoy the beautiful beaches – particularly famous Waikiki Beach in Honolulu. Art connoisseurs will appreciate the annual Hale'iwa Arts Festival, a celebration of local crafts, painting, jewelry, sculpture, dance, and music.

First the positives...It was centrally located. Near many restaurants, shopping, beaches, etc. We had a wonderful view of the ocean from our room. Staff was friendly. Restaurants right on property. Negatives. It was filthy. Carpets in the room and hallways absolutely filthy. People would throw their towels and unwanted food into the hallway and it would stay there all day. We never saw anyone cleaning not once the entire 5 days we were there, The air conditioning system was old and wicked loud every time it kicked on. The ducts were so filthy all one could smell was mold and mildew. The plumbing was old the tub would take a long time to drain after a shower. Maybe the resort fees could go to cleaning the ventilation ducts and updating the plumbing.

Communication with the Prince Waikiki was first rate. They were always offering to help us with anything we needed. Staff always friendly and pleased to offer assistance. We had a wonderful stay and especially enjoyed our bidet with heated seat! Only negative were the too soft pillows-could have used firmer ones. Great experience.

Arrived at hotel to large queue going outside of door. It was only staffed by 2 girls, who spoke very little English. We were given a tiny room with double bed, view was of a group of palm trees, which was almost upon our little Balcony.. Feel Very Let down, it was like a students hostel, nothing worked, building going on, The advertising for this hotel was misleading, our feet got dirty walking on the floor, as the stain was coming off and onto our feet. We were disturbed by lots of noise being by the sauna and Swimming pool entrance. This was our once in a lifetime holiday in Honolulu, We envied the people in the hotel over by Waikiki Beach!!

The Queen Kapiolani hotel is a great place to stay. Location is almost unbeatable. The staff all around are great and welcoming. My only complaint is the balcony’s on some rooms could use a touch up. I spent little to no time on mine but for those who do I’m sure they’d like a better and cleaner set up. Especially when paying extra for a room with a balcony. The interiors are the room are nice and upgraded then you have almost bareness on balconies.

Only the view was worth it

View good, location good, beachfront access. I was so excited to stay here only to be highly disappointed. The front desk staff were not that welcoming. Our room had broken outlets, broken mirror with tape on it, large stain on desk chair, toilet smelled, few pillows smelled--like that disgusting old musty sweat smell, dirty cups even though it was wrapped in plastic! The housekeeper turned AC off one of the days so the room was really hot when getting back after a long day. The pools close at 8pm which is ridiculous because you're on VACATION and I'm sure most people would agree on keeping it open a little longer considering the $50 per day resort fee. Most days, we explored Oahu, so we got back to resort late...would've been nice to jump in the pool after a long day. There's also a $45 per day parking fee if you self-park. Any equipment on the beach or reserved equipment at the pool had a fee. Homeless people were camped out on their beach. There weren't any convenient snack/coffee areas that stayed open late at night. So, what good is this resort fee. No one ever mentioned that there were complimentary fruits/snacks for breakfast. We even asked at check in if breakfast was free....this is the moment when the check in staff could have kindly informed us about the complimentary fruits! It would have really made this stay a little better. Since they said no, we just never went to that area. Lastly, we heard fireworks on our last night. No one mentioned anything about fireworks! Our room was to the side, so we could only see a tiny bit of the fireworks. I was actually finishing showering so by the time I got out, it was about done. It probably would've been a spectacular sight over the water, but no one mentioned this at all! This was my first time in Hawaii, was super excited about this resort, spent lot of money not just at this resort but on these islands (we also explored Big Island prior to Oahu), but I just came home feeling bummed about not getting my money's worth at this resort, so I will not be staying here again nor recommend it.

Iconic, grand....Royal

To start off, you’re in Hawaii so there is no reason to complain about anything. Its clear from the moment you meet any of the hotel staff that the rest of the US would be better off adopting their spirit of "Aloha". Secondly you are in one of the 2 most historic hotels on the islands - the other being a stones throw away (the Moana by Westin). If I want to feel entitled about my Bonvoy titanium status (which I would do in say, Los Angeles or Dallas) I have to weigh this versus the above two factors - again people are amazingly nice and you're in paradise - so get over yourself. I will concede slight disappointment in my Bonvoy suite night award buying me a mere window upgrade to an ocean view albeit same double room - a little tight with two kids vs having an extra living space but again, its Hawaii and stop complaining. Evidently the upgrades are either 1) actual suite or 2) ocean view and I received #2. Bright side, the better value of the ocean view suite was not quite the view but instead being slightly closer to the elevators for better in/out activity. The people were all nice, both staff and visitors. Food was good on all fronts. You are able to visit 4 partner hotels and room charge at each. The restaurants at the Moana were as excellent as those at the Royal Hawaiian. There are good meals to be had outside of the 4 hotels if you feel the need to venture out, and then there is also, for whatever reason, a cheesecake factory. If you are an adult, send your kids to the Sheraton pool and treat yourself to the tranquil setting of the adult pool. Either have an older kid babysit the younger kid or trade shifts with your spouse, but do not expect to have any fun sitting around the loud, crazy Sheraton pool. Waikiki beach is very very busy so while its yet more $ out of your pocket, rent an umbrella chair anyway. At any moment there will be 100+ surfers out in the water and they can be fun to watch.

We stayed at Vive for our honeymoon. The hospitality was great, particularly with the valet. The added bonus was having breakfast at the hotel each morning. Great location slightly away from the crowds but only 3 blocks from the beach and close to restaurants, shops, etc. The only comment is that the air conditioning units in the room are quite loud but are certainly necessary. We stayed in the king suite which was a really good size and comfortable bed and furniture with a large walk in shower. I would definitely recommend this place due to the location, the value and the service.

Loved it!! One of the Best in the Area

Reviewed By squinnman

Wow!! The Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort and the surrounding area were absolutely stunning. This hotel property is newly renovated and has some of the best customer service. All staff make an effort to address you (even by name) when they can. The rooms are very clean. The pool area and restaurant was clean and well-staffed. We were fortunate enough to have an ocean front room, so yes, the location is unbeatable and the room was awesome. It’s the people that make this resort the very best in the area. As a guest, your presence is consistently acknowledged with warmth and gracious hospitality. You can tell that they really appreciate having you, and that they will do whatever they possibly can to make your stay completely enjoyable. Voyager 47 lounge upgrade is worth it if you can get it. Looking forward to The Monkeypod Kitchen opening which will sit right on top of the stunning oceanfront beach. Can’t wait to return!!
