Miserable Experience. Fairmont not up to Sofitel standard

Reviewed By 2HappyAussies

My wife and I stayed at the Fairmont in its early days when there was Japanese ownership and were really looking forward to a return visit. However, disappointingly , there was no comparison with its glory days and our stay can only be described as “miserable”. We arrived at the Fairmont around 1.30pm on a Sunday. First problem was the unloading area at the hotel entrance which was far too small and was full, and required us to carry our luggage from a lower car park We did not expect our room to be ready and it wasn’t. We were told we were 18th in line to have our room serviced, I passed on my mobile number, and was told if I did not hear by 3pm to front up to reception. We proceeded to the Golf Club for lunch. Naturally no call was forthcoming. When we arrived back at reception, to our horror there was a queue of around 50 people extending from the reception desk to the Sublime Lounge. There were only three people on duty, another joined about 10 minutes later, and a fifth about 10 minutes after that. Absolutely not good enough! I waited in line for over 30 minutes to be checked in, an experience I have never endured in my 60 years travelling the world. After checking in there was still a very long line waiting to be served. We were dismayed to find the lovely lounge area downstairs from reception was now an extension of Jamison’s Restaurant with the only place to sit and enjoy the view of Jamison Valley, without purchasing food or drink, being upstairs near reception. The problem with this area was that you were greeted by a blast of icy cold air every time someone entered the Hotel and it was so unpleasant we did not stay long and adjourned to our room. We were on a Luxury Escapes package and our room was a superior king. It only just met my minimum room size of 25sq metres. It was a basic fit out with just a desk, lounge chair, and foot stool. There were no drawers and only a shelf in the cupboard. Clearly the resort does not cater for long stays. There were minimal bathroom products, no bath robes, and no coffee making machine. Not what you would expect from a quality resort In the past two months we have stayed at the Mirage Port Douglas, Chateau Elan in the Hunter Valley, and Kooindah Waters at Wyong, all of which would leave the Fairmont for dead and all had the inclusions missing from this Resort. I note they give themselves four stars which in our opinion is a gross exaggeration. For service, food, I would rate them as zero, and accommodation and facilities three at best. I note there are many TripAdvisor reviews echoing these sentiments. I am only sorry I did not follow my usual practice and look at the TA reviews before booking the Luxury Escapes package Breakfast the next morning was a disaster. There were no “clean” tables and about twelve waiting to be cleared. I eventually found someone setting a table and asked for one to be cleared . Unless you only wanted a continental breakfast you would be in for a disappointment. The fruit was fine. The porridge had the milk added [why?], was too runny, and luke warm. There should have been hot milk at the side to be added according to taste. The bacon, sausages, mushrooms in the bain maries were all but cold. Clearly nobody had been replacing the boiling water under the trays and the food quickly got cold. There was no facility to get a fried egg or omelette even at extra cost. The poached eggs were floating in tepid water and were also inedible. So it was fruit, cereal, toast and honey, something even the Fairmont could not get wrong as you had to do it yourself. Coffee from those dreadful push button appliances was very weak. So much so I resorted to espresso the second morning and after 5 button pushes got half a cup of black coffee. The second morning was the same experience with cold inedible food. However, there were clean tables available. As our room had not been serviced when we left the Hotel at 1245 for lunch on the Monday, I requested it be done whilst we were out. As we did not get back until around 5pm naturally the room had been done although there were no face washers and the clean towels had been thrown in the bath rather than put on the rack. We decided we would have some pre-dinner drinks and a light snack and adjourned to the Sublime Lounge where we got the last two chairs. I had to line up once again to get a drink with about 15 people ahead of me. Same thing when I went back for a second drink at which time I ordered food. When the food had not arrived after 30 minutes I went back to the queue to query when we would be getting it. Fortunately I did not have to wait until I reached the head of the queue and grabbed a passing waiter asking him if he could check . Within five minutes it arrived but was only warm. Clearly it had been in the kitchen waiting for someone to deliver it. Appalling! With this we decided we wanted no more and adjourned to our room. We could not wait to leave the Resort the next morning and head for home. Our conclusion was not only is the hotel over rated, it was grossly understaffed and most staff were not properly trained. They did not have either the facilities or staff levels to service a full hotel. Added to this, children were allowed to roam unsupervised helping themselves [with hands] to food in the buffet. This should be an absolute no-no given the current Covid issues and should be policed by the hotel. We even saw a dog heading for a room. It was not a service dog. Many of our friends were keen to know what we thought and our advice to them is “forget the Fairmont” - go elsewhere. As most had fond memories of the Resort in its early days they were very disappointed with its decline to its current status Our next holiday is on the Gold Coast in July ,where we will be on another Luxury Escapes package this time staying at Royal Pines Resort. I will put the house on the fact it will be far superior to the brief [fortunately] stay we had at the Fairmont In our view your resort is not up to Luxury Escapes standard standard, lowers the reputation of the Sofitel brand, and puts all of the Accor establishments under a cloud.

A better museum than a place to stay

Reviewed By Sunshine511247

Leura House was very disappointing. It is beautiful and historic and interesting to have a look around inside, but the place has been sadly neglected and the smell of mould made for an uncomfortable time. We were told that the renovations when it was converted to a guesthouse were cheap and it shows. Furniture and fittings are a mess and a muddle. The bathroom was clean and the shower was hot and with a strong flow. Continental breakfast was the bare minimum of toast and cereal and given the crowd of other guests and the unseasonably cold weather -- and the 8:30 start time for breakfast that was late for us -- we decamped in search of better fare at a local cafe. We won't be returning to Leura House

Come purely for the serenity and the generously sized clean rooms

Reviewed By Paula E

Stayed here only for a night and I believe we could have been the only ones there at the time. The photos do justice and the rooms are as advertised. Staff member is very friendly. Mini me and I went for a walksie around the grounds. There is an old school kiddie playground near reception, ping pong table, footy field and basketball court. It looks like (and the website has confirmed this) that it used to be a school. We saw a pathway heading up the hill and were tempted to climb it, but decided to err on the side of caution. I highly recommend the accommodation for people that want to get away from the hustle and bustle. Loved the beds - very firm. Made for a fantastic sleep. Shampoo, soap and body wash are included as well as your standard milk, tea and coffee. The bathroom has heated tiles. There are no other toiletries, which would have been nice, and the televisions in the room are a little small, but not a deal breaker. Towels also included, so no need to bring any linen. The room is large, clean, comfortable with dining tables and chairs and we had a great view of the field. This retreat has no breakfast, room service or have any pools or spa. It is just around the corner from town centre (approx 2kms), so provided you have a vehicle, you should be ok to get any kind of food or other necessities. Wifi is available free. There is a parking lot available. If you have elderly, drop them off at receiving area because the main parking lot is downhill from the entrance. We spoke only direct to the person who checked us in. Upon entering the retreat, it will seem that any cultural decorations or displays that the website advertise seemed to have been taken down and/or put away. We walked past a Chinese dragon puppet prop hung in one of the hallways while we were exploring the property. However, after talking to a staff member activities are still available, but run through bookings direct and/or in accordance to demand. This property has LOADs of potential. The staff member advised that they have archery, calligraphy, dumpling making and even a theatre room and communal kitchen for large groups. I was blown away with this information, so given everything I was able to find out, am looking forward to seeing what I can plan when we come back with the extended family. If you want peace and quiet, I would highly recommend this property. Ultimately it boils down to what you are looking for. For us, it is peace, quiet and privacy. Given the price (we paid AUD$197.40 for 2 adults, a 16yo and an 8yo) for one night, I think it is quite competitive for the area. In return, we got a big space, peace and quiet, clean and comfortable accommodation. No bells and whistles.
