Bereits 1846 kam es in den Besitz der Familie Volken, die es im Tausch gegen ein Haus in Sitten erwarb und 1880 erweiterte. 1924 wurde der dritte Stock ausgebaut, und das Haus erhielt das jetzige, imposante Dach, das dem Haus sein unverwechselbares Äusseres verleiht. Bis 2017 führte Josephine Volken das Hotel zusammen mit Sohn Didier, womit bereits die sechste Generation am Ruder war. Die „Grand Old Hotelière“ verpachtet den Betrieb seit August 2018 an Raymond Kronig, der den Charme vergangener Zeiten unbedingt erhalten will, das Haus aber insgesamt auffrischt und für neuen Wind sorgt. Noch ein Wort von Raymond Kronig, Gastgeber des Hotels du Glacier: "1849 wurde das Wallis und vor allem das Goms von der Cholera heimgesucht. Ein berühmtes Gommer Gericht trägt diesen Namen noch bis heute. Fragen Sie Ihre Gastgeber im Goms vor Ort, sie wissen die Geschichte bestens zu erzählen! 1916 erreichte auch die Spanische Grippe das Hotel Glacier. Wegen umfangreichen Truppentransporten, verbunden mit grossen Fluchtbewegungen, konnte sich die Seuche in der Schweiz rasch ausbreiten. Ins Goms eingeschleppt wurde sie vermutlich in Austauschzügen mit ausländischen Kriegsverwundeten und Internierten, die das Land durchquerten. Glück hatten wir im Goms im Jahre 1963, als in Zermatt eine Typhusepidemie wütete. Die Katastrophe brachte dennoch das ganze Wallis und die Schweiz in Verruf. Wie aktuell Geschichte sein kann, zeigt uns nun auch das Covid Virus. Neben Weltkriegen und Krankheiten hat unser Hotel einiges erlebt. Liebe Gäste, auch dies geht vorbei, wird aber ein Teil von unserer Geschichte bleiben und lernt uns dankbar zu sein für alles, was wir haben."
