10 Hostels hotel in San Francisco: Best hotel deals for 2023

April 22, 2023 Janette Largent

Each of San Francisco's unique neighborhoods has its own collective personality shaped by its residents, topography and history. This diversity is one of the great hallmarks of the city, as well as its tradition for rebellion, and both make traversing San Francisco as a visitor an intriguing adventure that provides fresh discoveries for locals as well. While half of the city’s growth during the 19th century was due to the arrival of American immigrants, the balance was due to immigration from around the world. Today, the city's neighborhoods reflect this fact with their cosmopolitan flair and distinctive character.

We stayed 3 nights in a private room with a private bath. It was great! Comfy bed, big bathroom and room, clean! We were covid paranoid so interacted little with others (who did not follow the mask rules but were so friendly.... Staff did try to enforce and did so in the lobby). The carpet was gross because it's old and stained and, well, a hostel carpet but I brought flip flops and was fine. Location was great! The nearby tenderloin was fine because we headed the opposite direction and frankly didn't see the bad parts at all..though we did not go out late so idk if the area nearby was sketch late night.

Love this place!

Reviewed By samwisefair

This place is rad as hell! Love all the photos of classic Bay Area musicians, love the vibe, and it’s clean with decently sized beds for a hostel! They hooked it up with towels and soaps included too which makes packing easier, not to mention the free coffee and tea! The real star of the show is Trene (I hope I spelled that right) at the front desk! She’s super kind and helpful, with great taste in nearby burrito spots. I came to her with some mildly odd questions and requests and she always had an idea for how to help me out. Shout out Trene and much love for the Music City!

Extremely Loud and Very Unaccommodating Front Desk

Reviewed By nip255

If you like listening to what sounds like a herd of elephants stomping above you all night long, then you will love this place. We got almost no sleep, even when using the included earplugs, and decided to check out after the first night of a two-night stay. We checked out on time and kindly explained our reasoning to the front desk, who then still insisted on charging us for the second night. We had no issue paying for the night we did stay, despite getting almost no sleep, but to then force us to pay for a second night is not acceptable at all. In thousands of nights in hotels, this is the first time I have ever encountered such a thing. Besides that, be aware that the rooms have no amenities other than a TV. There isn't even a coffee maker in the room. You are also read a long list of rules at check-in as though you are a child. I am not sure why this property has good reviews on some other sites. There are much better places to stay in the immediate area for the same or lower rates.

Good value, a bit tired

Reviewed By CharlotteR240

Stayed here for 3 nights in February, after my partner had previously stayed at the Downtown one. Location is great, lovely views from the area, close to buses and really close to Fisherman’s Wharf. Our private room was basic but clean and spacious. Free breakfast was ok, toast, peanut butter and jam, tea, coffee, granola and oats. Also had fruit out (apples only!) which was nice. It’s a little tired but in keeping with the setting (old military fort). Also, the ladies bathrooms on the ground floor had a constant smell and sometimes weren’t the cleanest (a couple of times the toilets were in a grim state - though this is more a reflection of other guests). Noise travels a lot in the hostel, which wasn’t really a problem till our last night - LOTS of banging above us like furniture being moved around. At breakfast the next day we realised there was now a large school party in so that might have had something to do with it. Overall, good value for money for San Fran (though expensive compared to places in the UK).

You find out AFTER you have climb the stairs, then pull your bags back down, around the corner and up the hill to the other hotel - not happy with liars!!! There is also no air con, no drinking glasses or even paper cups, no hairdryer, no tissues - nothing! One small that gets full very quickly with no housekeeping but no idea where else to put the rubbish myself as no one to ask! Remote for TV was so bad I was climbing up the wall trying to change stations! Some good point for this hotel but Im not giving them any credit

Budget accomodation for very basic needs

Reviewed By janbas22

I have stayed at the Adelaide hostel for 5 nights in a shared 4 beds room. The facilities are not the newest and could use some renovation, but overall clean. Very basic accomodation as one would expect from a hostel. The type of living was quite like going back to staying at a dormitory, not in a good way. Some may argue that it's like that in any hostel, but my past experience staying in other hostels in different US cities , like in New York, was quite better, so I have something to compare it with. The offered "breakfast" is basically a do-it-yourself bagels with different spreads, cereals, fruit and uncooked eggs. You can use the kitchen to cook yourself, but the kitchen can get quite crowded in the peak hours (mornings and evenings). Wifi was overall ok, although did get disconnected at times. The biggest con for me was the high noise level by some tenants being in the alley outside the building very late at night that I could hear from my room. Although not directly management's fault, I think they should pay more attention to that and give some warnings. Overall, a budget option in a very good central location close to everything that I would recommend to those who are travelling solo or maybe with a friend, who are ok with the basic stuff and will use it mainly for sleeping purposes

Location allowed us to rely on public transit

We prededed our trip that focused on the US Open at Pebble Beach with a four night stay at My Rose Garden Guest rooms. The quiet neighbourhood location and spacious accommodation of the Green room with a very comfortable bed , ensuite and a thoughtfully prepared breakfast were all features we enjoyed. Our Hostess was very personable and her friendliness added to the enjoyment of our stay in San Francisco. We were very busy and did not really have time to linger in the common areas of the house but we certainly took advantage of the proximity to Baker Beach, and the Cliff House as well as excellent public transit connections.
