10 Campgrounds in West Virginia: Best hotel deals for 2023

April 19, 2023 Etsuko Causey

As you would expect, The Mountain State displays rustic charm with dramatic river gorges, large limestone caverns and spectacular mountain views. West Virginia hosts outdoor enthusiasts and family vacationers looking for fresh-air activities and serene mountain atmosphere. If stimulating city holidays are your preference, Charleston combines warm hospitality with a lovely riverside location. A family-friendly destination, you’ll discover children’s theatre, river park recreation and popular Bridge Road for shopping and dining. Smaller towns blend outdoor adventure with quaint village atmospheres. Set between the New, Greenbrier and Bluestone Rivers, Hinton is an historic rail town filled with turn-of-the-century architecture and a host of water activities at its doorstep – rafting, fishing, kayaking and more. In the heart of West Virginia, Summersville is a “Mountain Water Playground.” Its lakeside location encourages outdoor recreation from swimming and boating to scuba diving and rafting. And history buffs can trace Civil War battles throughout the states historic sites and state parks. Hiking or horseback riding along trails through deep hardwood forests is another family favorite, especially when you stop for a picnic along a clear mountain stream.

Lovely location but don't expect it to be "glamping"

Reviewed By Manningjen

This campground is large and wooded with a beautiful creek that must be great to swim in in summer. We stayed in a cottage with utilities that was rather run down and didn't look as good as the pictures (for example, there was an out of order sign on the dryer, it was musty and dusty & some light fixtures broken). But if you want a rustic camping experience in a lovely setting, and don't mind portapotties, this will be fine. This is not Instagrammable glamping. The extensive site would be fun for kids to run around in.

First, this part of the state is stunning — it’s very unique with stunning scenery. The cabin was delightful!! We stayed in Serenity— the weather was nice and cool so after hiking and birding all day, the hot tub was a real treat. Quiet surroundings. Good rest. Highly recommend. Happy 25th Wedding Anniversary to us ?.

It's the people!

Just wanted to say had an excellent adventure here over Memorial Day Weekend! The facilities were well maintained and exceptionally clean. The new-ish pool area and bar were phenomenal! But really, this review is about the staff and guests! Everyone, from the guests to the grounds crew, office staff, to the UTV riding garbage taker, to the restaurant staff, to the bartenders (expected?) to the DJ, and everyone I forgot, were just super friendly and helpful!! They all genuinely wanted you to be there and have a great time. Plus the "tab system" is very helpful, and you don't need to carry a card or cash around all the time. We stayed in a RV, the site had water/electric and was level. Very suitable for a mountain campground. The interior roads are narrow, so it is well suited to class B's and smaller C's. I'd call ahead for information with full on large Class A/C RV's. All in all 5 stars! Can't wait for another trip!

The cabins were well stocked and beautiful and the guided trail ride was worth every penny. The leaves were spectacular! Not all rentals have windshields which are very nice on chilly or rainy days. Beautiful area and the locals were great too. We got to see the wild horses twice and a waterfall. Highly recommended!

Can't Wait to Return!

We love it here! Stayed in Bobcat, large front porch and large back deck overlooking woods and stream. Very, very clean. Thoroughly enjoyed the Roku TV, all kinds of channels. We had good wifi for iPads but cell service was spotty. Special thank you for the bright reading light in living room!!!! Some have complained about the roads, the roads are excellent. The cabin is just 10 minutes from I-68 and is the same exit as Coopers Rock, which is a must see! Most of it is a two-lane road until the last one mile, Cougar Lane. Cougar Lane is nicely paved but yes it is narrow. However I think it is mostly a private road and we never encountered another car on it. We did as they requested and did not use GPS. If you follow their instructions there is no problem.
