Wonderful bed and breakfast in New Bern!

Reviewed By ILuvEngland

We stayed here for one night and loved it! We stayed in the Licoln room and it was a gem. Wonderful samplers done by young women and girls at least one hundred years ago, framed on the walls, a modern bathroom with a good shower, that was easy to use, and the bed was so comfortable I slept the best night sleep I had had in years. The sheets were luxuriusly soft too. Everything was very clean and in perfect condition. The breakfast was especially great since we needed one to be low sodium and the hosts prepared it that way, no problem. Food was truly delicious with a wide selection of entrees, which is unusual for a B and B. The house is located on Pollard Street which is in walking distance of the main part of town and of the water. We would definately stay here again, hopefully for more than one night next time!

I booked this B&B based on the previous reviews of its owner. Sadly when I arrived, Chuck had retired and newpeople had taken it over only a week before. It might have been an idea to close for a short while to get staff trained and for them to know and understand the lovely old place. There was no-one there when we arrived back in the evening and quite a few of the amenities mentioned in the previous reviews were missing. The two staff that we did meet were very helpful but didn't know where anything was or how things worked. We were told about the gourmet breakfast which turned out to be a single small plate. This isn't my previous experience of B&B's. The location however was perfect, set on a quiet side street in old Wilmington just a short walk from the river. I'm sure that things will settle down soon but I'm sorry I paid what I did for a very mediochre experience.

Views of the sound are outstanding. Request a sound front room and you are all but in the water overseeing an incredible sunset. The deck outside the rooms is not private but it is generally quiet. Rooms are well maintained. Caroline at the front desk is outstanding. Muffins and bagels and cereal are included in the mornings. Price is very reasonable.

Great location right along the river walk. Short walk to tons of shops and restaurants. Modern and clean look. Safe and mini fridge in room. Unfortunately the room was disgustingly filthy. Super sticky floors and urine overspray all over the slide bathroom door.

Elmwood 1820 Bed & Breakfast Inn

Since 1820, Elmwood has remained the crown jewel of style and sophistication of the "original" Washington with its eye-catching Italianate detailing and eclectic features. Now a privately owned residence operating as a luxury Bed & Breakfast Inn, Elmwood 1820 continues to share its beauty with people who were born to wander, find adventure, explore, and seek respite in the most unique and curious of places. Although Elmwood 1820 has ornate detailing, it's not a "period piece" decorated with unconventional and uncomfortable furnishings. It is a gracious home, embodying a very transitional, diverse style representative of its magnificent history, as well as the many adventures and world travels of its owners. There are four guest rooms: The Writer, The Painter, The Explorer, and The Romantic. Each representing characters inspiring the Innkeepers over the years; friends, family, and spirits making them the men they are today. All have modern comforts like Luxurious Robes and Plush Turkish Cotton Towels; Goose Down or Hypoallergenic Down Pillows and Duvet; Wi-Fi; American-Made Eco-Friendly Amenities; Turndown Service; Complimentary Sparkling or Still Water and Organic Snacks. They are havens with massive beds dressed in soft canopies, lit by sparkling chandeliers, and adorned with fresh-cut flowers. Gourmet Breakfast prepared and served each morning.

Will definitely visit again.

The Elmwood B&B was the perfect get-away spot for my husband and I to decompress! Richard was absolutely a fantastic host and we actually said to him, "we hope you love what you do because you are very good at it" ...to which he responded "I do love it". That passion for providing an exceptional experience for his guests was evident in the quality of the rooms, the pleasing/interesting decor, the provision of water and Nespresso in each room in addition to the carafe of coffee delivered to our door in the morning, the fantastic breakfast on their beautiful porch and the access to a glass of wine anytime we wanted it. It is obvious Elmwood is a leader and pace setter for all the new development happening in Washington. There are plenty of nice restuarants and shops in walking distance from Elmwood and srtolling along the water front boardwalk was also quite nice. We would definitley visit again.
