Amazing stay!

Reviewed By Curious689659

One of the best traditional inns (ryokan) in Sakata! Staff are very friendly and especially interested in foreign guests. Was able to have great conversations and learn more about Sakata! There are English-speaking staff, English menu and other information translated into English. Rooms are clean and cozy and the herbal bathhouse (ofuro) is open 24hr. Free bicycle rental is available and so all of Sakata’s tourist attractions can easily be visited within a 40-minute walking radius. Lunch in Wakaba is also open to non-guests and is always priced at ¥800. Even among the locals, Wakaba is known for its delicious food! Halal food can also be provided if requested in advance. It was an amazing stay!

Large room

Located about a kilometre from the Station and 5 minutes walk to Tendō Park. The room was one of the largest we stayed in at Japan. The staff were very helpful. The building and interior is a little dated but clean and in good condition. The onsen is large. Breakfast has a good range of food but it run out early so you need to arrive at the restaurant no later than 8am

A long-established inn in Zao Onsen

Reviewed By carlosk582

It is a long-established inn in Zao Onsen. The historic building is a time-honored figure. The food was also very delicious. Especially the local beef was delicious. In winter you can enjoy skiing, and from spring to summer you can enjoy tracking and hiking. Of course, you can enjoy the hot springs all season.

Kanshokan

The history of Kansyokan goes back to the Edo Period (17th?19th centuries). Having flourished as a spa retreat for the feudal lord of Tozawa-han (a feudal territory that is now Shinjo City), the Semi Onsen area retains much of the atmosphere of a traditional hot-spring town. You will be welcomed by seasonal changes in the surrounding mountains and the babbling of the crystal clear Oguni River, which you can hear from your room. From the moment you step through the door until the moment you depart, please relax and indulge your senses at Kansyokan.

Excellent service and catering

Reviewed By xumdeo

We traveled from Shinjo and arrived in the evening in the middle of a snow storm, and was surprised with the spontaneous pick up from the Semionsen station. Trains were sparse at about once every 2 hours only, we were already prepared for the worst- to trot down to the hotel in the middle of the snow storm. So that saved us. Food was excellent, the Kaiseki dinner was top notched, even the buffet breakfast was not for the light hearted. I do understand that the facilities were a bit run down and would definitely require some refurbishment. Our room was very clean, so no complaints from us. Is the place over priced? No if you consider the quality of the dinner.

onsen ryokan near the lifts

Reviewed By saikou

They have a man-made "onsen" in addition to the natural sulfur onsen that Zao is known for. The sulfur is quite strong (and also quite hot) so be careful not to stay in too long. Full course dinner and breakfast are both good. We had a western/Japanese room with beds, which are very short but I still slept ok. We went in the fall and taking the ropeway up to the top (or halfway and hiking the rest as we did) is well worth it. From the top it's only a short hike to a viewpoint of Okama (a crater lake), which is a big attraction (usually reached directly by car) and absolutely a must-see.

Lovely hotel

Reviewed By JTMSydney

We stayed here when visiting friends in Yamagata. Little english is spoken here but there is a great onsen bath house - fantastic in fact. Good location quite close to station, meals were good. There are lots of tour groups - mostly elderly coming to stay and use the bath house. The hotel is big enough to cater for such big groups. If you have reason to be in Kaminoyama then this is a good place to stay. Rooms are spacious and well decorated.

Superb food, lovely onsen

Reviewed By Sonia W

We stayed 3 nights at this ryokan in a ‘Japanese retro style room’ (room 222). Our room was spacious and warm, and had an ensuite toilet. We were able to rent skis directly from the ryokan cheaply and walk to the ski terminals. The ryokan’s onsen were quite small but beautiful, with the men’s and women’s sides swapping twice per day. The food was particularly good at this ryokan. I don’t like fish or other seafood but I usually end up eating a lot while in Japan. However, the chef at Oomiya provided superb kaiseki dinners and breakfasts without seafood based on my booking request. I really appreciated having a few days off seafood, especially when it was such superb food!

Fantastic Stay

Reviewed By ChiC323

We booked this hotel as part of our Yamagata trip, and this was perhaps one of the best Ryokan experiences. The traditional room was very clean, and the food was surprisingly good for the price. Owner speaks English and was extremely helpful. We arrived during the first snow of Yamagata, and the property was beautiful. This Ryokan was also rich with history, and has been passed down from generation to generation. The location is closed to the Haguro Pagoda, which is definitely worth a visit. We can't recommend this Ryokan enough!
