Get to Matera quickly, because it’s still relatively undiscovered by foreign tourists. In town, visit the Domenico Ridola National Museum. Matera’s real claim to fame, though, and the reason it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the extensive series of cave dwellings ("i sassi") southeast of town, first inhabited by Benedictine and Basilian monks. You’ll see individual cells, chapels, and even some churches, many adorned with Byzantine decorations and frescoes.

This restorant is stell living at the and of '90. Completly full of people, we wait almost one hour to have the first dish on our table. Only one waiter (very speed) for to mutch people is the reason why. The only thing really good to eat was Orecchiette. Others dishes was old fashion.

I recently reviewed another Italian restaurant that served me the finest stinco di maiale I'd ever had. Since that's changed now, I must review La Fedda Rosse. Do you know how sometimes, particularly in the US, something looks very delicious but the flavor is not that great? This was the opposite. It came out looking indescribably delicious and it was even better.

We had the pleasure of eating here for our 40th anniversary based on the recommendation sought from our hotel Maison D'Ax for a typical restaurant. The restaurant is located not far from Piazza Duomo on the corner of Piazza del Sedile. An elegant restaurant with lovely ambiance with a mix of locals & tourists. Pleasant service from the staff. All of the courses were delicious & complemented by the wine recommended to meet our desire to have a regional wine. It was certainly a meal worthy of the occasion and have no hesitation in recommending it to others and would return if we ever go back to Matera. I can highly recommend the Maltagliati pasta with white ragout of lamb .

We arrived to Sassi di Matera at lunch time. We chose La Grotta nei Sassi restaurant and it was a good choice, we were very satisfied.Because of my wife's food intolerance, we had - as always - prepared lists of allowed and forbidden ingredients. Our hosts were very friendly and helpful and had prepared a excellent salad for her using the lists. They even asked about ingredients not on our lists. As they were told that we were in a hurry, our lunch was ready in no time at all. Both the octopus salad for antipasto and the local specialty, Oricchiette con i Cima di Rape for me were very tasty. The wine of the house was also very good, we enjoyed it. Unfortunately, we had not enough time for I Dolci, because of our time schedule, it was a very brief visit to Sassi di Matera. We would recommend this restaurant.

Your local veggie experience made by our mums
Summary of the main points of the review below: it was overpriced, the portions were tiny, the food not that great and not that local either, the wine mediocre, and to top it off the waiter unpleasant. A huge disappointment, we left hungry and it spoiled our evening. Riassunto della recensione: pessimo rapporto qualita'-prezzo, cibo niente di speciale, vino mediocre, porzioni minuscole, cameriere poco simpatico. Ce ne siamo andati affamati e ci ha rovinato la serata. We came here as my husband is vegetarian and because the place advertised "local cuisine" (maybe that should have put me off from the start). It was nice to sit at the "friendliness table" with other people, but it was very hard to get in and out from the seat, and the seat itself not comfortable (feet raised on table base). The menu included cous cous, falafel, veggie burger... not exactly local cuisine! It had a few local dishes, which we ordered. We also asked for a glass of red Aglianico, the waiter recommended one that he said he had already opened - incidentally, that was the most expensive one on the list (6 euro for a small glass, it's a lot for Italy), but it did not taste nice (too sour, I would say). He also pushed us to get 2 glasses, but I wanted to taste one first... so I stayed with the water (seemingly tapped). We then had the local fried peppers - peperoni cruschi (nice, although nothing special, I cannot compare them with other ones as these were my first ones) and polpette di ricotta (those were nice, well this review does have 1 star after all). Then we made the mistake of ordering two portions of homemade pasta: 12 euros each, for a really minuscule portion, that did not taste like much either. We could not believe it and felt totally ripped off (also considering that vegetables are cheaper in Southern Italy)... In the meantime the waiter, who had asked for our name at the start (as he did with everyone, I guess to organize the orders or to create an informal atmosphere perhaps) kept calling me with the wrong first name, using the male version (I am female, Italian, with a very easy and common name). So we decided to skip the desert and leave asap. The waiter joked that "we would regret it". When dessert arrived for the (lovely) people sitting next to us, the waiter made a point of telling us, winking: "You see what you are missing!". Very funny. We left, still hungry, and disappointed as we had been looking forward to our first dinner in Matera.Note that, on the evening after, for the same amount of money, we ate and drank very well in a proper local place. Don't be fooled by the only vegetarian restaurant in town, there are plenty of better local places where you can find vegetarian options too, and a more genuine and respectful service.

My colleague and I were treated to dinner at Alle Fornaci on a recent trip to Matera. The restaurant and meal we received is one of the best experiences I have had on a work trip. The food was outstanding with plenty of flavours, good portions without being too big and coupled with great service and wonderful regional wines.I would highly recommend this restaurant.
